Visitors Guide - Places to stay, eat and drink + things to do

This list is not a conclusive list of every establishment, just those that are highly regarded. Please leave your own recommendations in the replies. You may also find more information on the Visit Derry website (https://www.visitderry.com/) and on their socials. Note - some of the recommendations are based outside Derry but all are within a short driving distance of Derry.

Restaurants:

Street Food / Cafe's * Clipper Quay Street Food - Located along the Foyle Marina, multiple street food vendors and a bar are located here providing a range of options, great for when you cant agree on what type of food you want to eat - https://www.clipperquaystreetfood.com/ * The Pickled Duck - Foyle Marina - https://www.facebook.com/pickledduckcafe/ * Mekong Street Food (Vietnamese food) - https://www.facebook.com/MekongSF/ - also operate as a restaurant so maybe it should be above. * PYKE 'N' POMMES - https://www.pykenpommes.ie/ * Guapo (Mexican Food) - https://www.facebook.com/GuapoFreshMex/ * Doherty's Home Bakery - Good if you want a sweet treat or a cheap bite to eat on the go - https://www.facebook.com/Dohertys-Home-Bakery-195510393844691/ * Thai Jing Jing Street Food (Thai takeaway) - https://www.facebook.com/ThaiJingJingStreetFood * The Coffee Tree (Coffee shop) - Serves the best coffee in Derry in my opinion and also the nicest traybakes! Not had their soup or sandwiches but have heard great things. The only negative is they currently do not open on weekends - https://www.facebook.com/p/The-Coffee-Tree-100063482233001/ * Graft Coffee (Coffee shop) - Runs the Coffee tree very close for the best Coffee in the city. Located on Academy road and opens Mon-Sat - https://www.instagram.com/graft_coffee/ * Oui Bakery - French Bakery & Pâtisserie in the heart of Derry's Craft Village - https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61565032170636

Nearby Beaches - Vary from 20 min drive to 50min

  • Lisfannon Beach - The closest beach to Derry, located before Buncrana on the left. Approx 20 mins drive.
  • Buncrana Beach - Located 5 mins beyond Lisfannon. Bus services to Buncrana run daily.
  • Pollan Beach - Located around the coast from Buncrana and next to one of the best golf courses (Ballyliffin Golf Club) in Ireland.
  • Five Finger Strand - Up the coast from Ballyliffin and across the bay sits Five Finger Strand. With some of the highest sand dunes in Europe and a quaint old church close by, this is a great place to go for a walk or chill on the beach. Note: Do not swim in the water or enter beyond knee height. The water here is dangerous and is known by locals as such.
  • Castlerock Beach - Easy to get to via the train (35/40 mins) from the waterside train station.
  • Benone/Downhill Beach - Located just before Castlerock beach but you would need your own car to get to it. 45 min drive. A ferry service runs from Greencastle (beside Moville) to Magillion Point next to Benone - https://loughfoyleferry.com/timetable-fares/.
  • Shroove Beach - Located just beyond Moville. 40 min drive.
  • Culdaff Beach - Just along the coast from Shroove. 40 min drive.
  • Rathmullan - the closest beach to Derry which is the other side of Letterkenny of which there are lots (Downings, Dunfanaghy, Portsalon etc). You can get the ferry from Buncrana to Rathmullan - http://swillyferry.com/.

Day Trips / Places to see

All of these places below are located in the general North West area and you will likely need a car to get to them.

Water sports / Outdoor Activities

Best Place for Blonde Balayage Hair

My hair is currently blonde with the root coming in, but it's turned brassy and I want to try something different.

Anywhere that does a good balayage? Budget is around £200

Airport Parking

• Upvotes

Hey guys, flying out of City of Derry airport on Saturday for the first time in a number of years. Is it still possible to leave the car outside the airport for a few days on the adjacent road (right hand side as you look at airport from roundabout). I never had issues previously but wondering if it's still possible or best just paying the parking price inside the airport boundaries (£44 for 2 days...). Thanks,

Halloween AI slop?

Has anyone seen this ‘number 1 Halloween song’ that’s fully AI with an AI video that the council have promoted too?

This is ridiculous considering we’re supposed to be Halloween capital of Europe! Especially with so many talents people in this town. Sad to see

Halloween Pub Recs

Hello! My friends and I are very excited to go to Derry on Halloween this year. We're all in our mid-20s and looking for the best pubs to go to after the fireworks. We love to dance and are on the hunt for a good vibe. We're going to be in a group of around 10 people, and we don't have any tickets yet. Do we need tickets to get into pubs? I would appreciate any and all advice you have on which pubs + clubs we should check out!

What's going on on the town centre?

Lots of cops in high viz and the drones are up. Looks like a grid search inside the walls. Cops at the end of each street while the drone moves about.

Post in Derry

I used to get post once a week now it’s every 3 weeks , even missed a important X-ray because of them.

Was waiting in yesterday for a delivery (came from America in 2 days ) Royal Mail couldn’t deliver it to my house 3 miles from sorting office in 2 days even tho I paid for fast delivery.
The delivery guy couldn’t be arsed working after 5 and put address inaccessible (happened 3 times before)
Do they not work after 5oclock.
It’s a sad state of affairs when Amazon are a more reliable delivery option these days.

Stoney Manor Development

Does anyone know anything about the Stoney Manor development?

I’m really interested in one of the homes, but it feels like it’s never going to be built.

Paul O’Keefe said in a Facebook comment back in Febuary: “after months of work behind the scenes to sort funding it has finally been sorted - it will take 3 months to get boots back on the ground with aiming of the end of the year for first completions!
It's finally something positive for everyone involved including the current residents”

**update. I just googled Stoney manor Derry and went on to property pal to look at the houses and it gave me this message:

“We're sorry, we can't find the development you're looking for.
This might be because the listing for Stoney Manor, Woodside Road, L'Derry, BT47 2QE has been removed from the market or you have used an incorrect link.”

They also aren’t showing up on paul okeefes website anymore

Oil drums

Considering getting a few oil drums to get kerosene at a petrol station myself if it’s worth the saving. Does anyone do this rather than paying for delivery? I’m not planning to go back and forth with 500 litres but maybe if I know I’m driving past a station get 60 litres. Worth the saving or just pay for it all at once for the convenience?

Spanish Speaking Club

Heya. Does anyone know of Spanish speaking gatherings in Derry?

Had a look around but haven't been able to see one that exists.

Would probably start one if there isn't one already tbh

How the fuck do you get a doctors appointment!

I've had back pain for months. O finally bit the bullet and tried to book an appointment. I ring my practice and if its between 6:00pm and 8:30am it says ring back between 8:30am and 6pm.

I've tried ringing at 8:30am ON THE DOT mutiple times and it already says they're booked up.

Does anyone remember the novelty dessert burger place in Waterloo Place maybe 10+ years ago?

I can't find anything about it on the internet and I'm trying to make sure I'm not mad lol. You could get a burger with chocolate, marshmallows or sprinkles etc, the place didn't last long. I might be losing it though, thanks.
