We know you have some questions. We know things have been hanging in the balance.
As some of you may know, and most of you probably don’t, this sub was recently put up for adoption.
Well as of a week or so ago, me and /u/livinin82 have taken over. Fear not, weary redditors, for we have known each other quite some time, and we have been on Reddit for a while as well. We absolutely recognize /r/DAE as a staple of the beginning of Reddit, as well as a place most of us subscribed to first.
We do not take this lightly, and that’s why we’ve been preparing to make this announcement.
First things first: There are a lot of things in the queue from however long this subreddit has been in a stasis. We are doing our best to work through it and see what is in there worth keeping and what needs to be trashed. Which brings us to our next point.
Second: While sifting through this massive inbox, we witnessed a few, for lack of better terms, concerning post suggestions/topics. I think I speak for everyone here when I say this isn't a place to go out of your way to be edgy. Maybe try other subreddits that are less universally subscribed to. We don’t need more violence or negativity in the world. This will be at our discretion but don’t just post things to shock people, or get a negative reaction. There are many other places for things like that. Maybe try the Instagram comments section.
Third: In the future after we figure out the direction we’re taking this sub, we’d like to entertain the idea of opening up applications for mods. We will be very intentional with screening should we decide to go that far. Keep a lookout here in case we post about it, and if you’re interested, let us know!!
Our main goal here is to appreciate the shared experience. We know this is Reddit and some things will be risqué or a little off color to some extent, and we aren’t prudes ourselves, just make sure to mark NSFW if you are posting something that you know a boss or coworker wouldn’t want to read at work.
With that being said, if you have any suggestions about what we should do with our newly acquired section of the internet, by all means leave it in the comments. We will be a little scattered in the beginning as we have our own personal lives, and other coals in the fire as well. We look forward to upholding the community that many others have worked to build, as well as making sure people feel safe and happy here. Be kind to each other, even if you disagree with someone. And if you have an ancient post you wanna resubmit feel free.
This is a fresh start for this sub so we’re here for it.

What do/did you call your step parents? I’m not sure if it’s due to my strict upbringing or a regional/cultural thing but I-31F, grew up in the Deep South (Louisiana) & my siblings and I call our stepmother “Ms. _insert name_” —it is actually quite unfathomable to think we would have ever been allowed to call her by just her name and not accompanied with a “Ms./Mr.”—however the majority of people I know didn’t/don’t use courtesy titles when addressing or speaking about their step-parent. I personally don’t see it as disrespectful but still it is always jarring to me when someone calls their step-parent by just their first name. I also distinctly remember even feeling somewhat embarrassed growing up having to say in front of others or introduce my stepmom and use ‘Ms.’ Just wondering how normal of an occurrence this is for other families, what did you call your stepparent? Did you have to use any honorifics?
I hate being touched after eating it only last until the food settles and I dont feel any food on my stomach <<<it also applies to inanimate objects to like seatbelts. Feels like it should be a normal thing no?

For most of the year (spring, autumn, and even chilly summer or winter nights), my absolute favorite way to fall asleep is with the bedroom window cracked open. There is nothing better than crisp, fresh air.
The problem hits around 4:00 or 5:00 AM:
If I leave it closed all night, the room gets stuffy and my sleep quality suffers. If I leave it open, I freeze by dawn.
How does everyone else deal with this? Are there any clever workarounds, or do we all just suffer through the morning freeze?

Is anyone actually checking those? Or am I just throwing my comment into a void to never be seen? I want to make my own post that might actually get some views. And I want to see other people’s posts bc I’m not gonna remember to keep checking a megathread but I might come across something interesting on my feed if people were allowed to post

I've drank both types of sodas frequently, so I think I can give an opinion. For some reason, diet soda doesn't really fulfill me. It tastes good in the moment and I would happily take one. However, after I'm done drinking, I don't feel fulfilled. I don't really get that happy feeling, unlike when I eat sugary foods. Instead, I feel unfulfilled which isn't a great feeling, and I want to eat more sugary things. Is my body playing a trick on me? I think my body wants me to eat real sugar, and it won't be tricked.

I’m not saying anything racist, sexist, homophobic, hateful, or anything like that. I could say that I don’t like a certain movie and still get downvoted, depending on the sub, the people that see the post, even depending on the time of day. I know that’s it’s people’s opinion but seeing the downvotes on the screen brings me so much anxiety for some reason. Lately I’ve been trying to start commenting my real opinions on posts, to try and get used to downvotes, idk if it’s helping but hopefully it does. I do have diagnosed anxiety and this is one of the ways it shows itself. In the past I’ve tried deleting social media in general, but I really want to be able to get over this and not feel overly anxious at other people disliking my opinion. Anyone else relate?

I get lonely pretty often, and working nights, i get bored & lonely pretty strongly for a good 10hrs. i also barely have friends who arent busy all the time, and my partner works days. Discord servers ignore me, and facebook is Ai slop.
So, i come here, and i post things hoping they'll get enough attention for me to at least argue with someone about something. A real, actual long conversation with a person is what i want, but beggars cant be choosers.
Anybody else like this?

I feel awkward around babies because idk what to do… I don’t want to do baby talk. I don’t get the urge to do baby talk. I actually feel broken. There are people that get happy when they see strangers babies and want to hold them and talk to them. I don’t feel that way.. who else feels the same way I do?

Good or bad back posture aside, there is no position that feels healthy or right for my legs, hips, and lower back when sitting on an office chair. I am constantly readjusting, trying wonky ways to put my legs in the chair or sit weird, getting up & sitting back down, etc.
For reference, at home, i usually sit on the floor or on a huge sofa; and no matter which of these i'm on, i sit either in: either asian squat, criss-cross applesauce, butterfly, on my knees, or half-lotus. If none of those, i'm laying down in some way.
The more i try to "sit normal", the more stiff my knees & hips feel over time, and the more my lower back hurts.

I don't often consider using it, but any time I do, I find myself consciously rephrasing it now because I am concerned people might think what I wrote was written by AI if I use it, especially if the rest of the comment is formally worded.

i know a lot of people feel comforted by sharing a bed with someone else, but for all my life it’s been so difficult for me to sleep unless i’m by myself.
it doesn’t even matter if i’m in my own bed or not. it also doesn’t matter how comfortable i am with the person in bed with me. if im sleeping with someone else, it’s like i become so aware of my own presence that i just can’t fall asleep as easily as i would alone. i usually have to take melatonin gummies or some sort of medicine so that i can fall asleep. and im someone whose main love language is physical touch and who lovesss cuddling, hugs, etc., but i need my own space in order to sleep well.
i’m only 21 but sometimes i think about marriage and how i might have to tell my partner “look, i love you, but i cannot share the bed with you every night, it’s impossible for me to sleep with you next to me” LOL
I've used Reddit since a teen, and the past year I would say I have noticed my feed just become more and more detached from anything I care about, to the point now I am opening Reddit and closing it in moments.
I guess it's a positive for my productivity and time management, but being remote for school and by myself most of the time, it feels like there's no place to go on social media anymore and subs I enjoyed just feel so watered down and outright toxic in the comments
Wasn't quite sure what to title this. But, does anyone else have completely random memories of flavors/textures pop into their head, with absolutely no associated information about what food or drink it is? Super vivid, too, like I swear I can taste the . . . whatever . . . as if I were eating it. But within seconds the memory starts to fade again. And so, if the taste was good, I have only that long to figure out what the heck I'm eating so I can actually eat it for real.
It's like when a snippet of a song gets stuck in your head and you drive yourself crazy trying to figure out what song it was and your brain won't tell you.

It feels like 95% of the time, whenever I see a promising new software project on GitHub, Claude ends up being one of the "contributors".
Even if you set aside the the ethical issues that come with AI, it's not a good sign when software is coded with it, because instead of actually creating the software themselves and understanding how it works, people are handing the reins to an algorithm that doesn't even deliver deterministic results.
This is not good for long-term maintainability, and it's prone to introducing weird, unexpected bugs. I know this, because in addition to using vibe-coded software, I've gotten AI to spit out some spaghetti code scripts myself.
I'll admit that I've found it useful for solving problems sometimes, but I'm not a programmer, and I'd probably come up with better solutions for those problems if I actually knew what I was doing.
Nobody else I know does this but I think it makes sense and want to know if anyone else does this too.
To clarify (poorly), if I want to ask someone 3 questions I start with 'Three questions. (question 1)'. Or it can be combinations like 'Two questions and a statement.'
And then I start talking.
I just think it's useful so both people know how long it's going to take and when to change the topic. Idk really.

I've seen people talk about several times in the past, people claimed "Youtube is dead", but seriously, the vast majority of content creators stopped posting. I mysteriously once found out several (pretty old) channels also vanished. In the past (Pre-Covid), I'd go there and there would be several videos I'd open in new tabs, and watch, and it could take days before I get to all of them. Now, it's just AI news, low-quality stand-up comedies, and podcasts of people I've never heard of.
Some mentioned it's because of Tik tok, and others said they made some algorithm change that won't highlight content to users unless it's super frequent.

when i say everything, i mean everything. even the simplest of concepts, such as what a name is. i’ve had whatever this is for years. it happens once in a blue moon, and always comes out of nowhere. i’d be still for a couple of minutes while struggling to comprehend or recall anything, and it’d almost scare me. i tried explaining this to my mom once and she looked at me as if i became a flat earther. if anyone could point me in the right direction of identifying this i’d really appreciate it. i’m 23 btw if that matters.
edit: i’ve read all the suggestions and will definitely take them into account! thank you :)
