✨ Hello, r/crystal! ✨
Just wanted to introduce (or reintroduce!) r/mineralcollectors, which is now under new management!
Our goal is to build a welcoming community for everyone who loves the mineral kingdom—whether you’re into raw minerals, polished specimens, crystals, fossils, lapidary work, rare finds, micromounts, or just learning something new.
r/mineralcollectors is a science- and geology-focused community. We celebrate the natural history, formation, identification, and collection of minerals and crystals. To keep discussions on topic, we ask that posts remain focused on geology and mineralogy rather than spiritual or metaphysical practices.
You’ll also find that sales, self-promotion, and advertising aren’t allowed, so the focus stays on sharing knowledge, collections, and appreciation for these incredible natural specimens.
We’d love for collectors of all experience levels to stop by and:
🪨 Share your favorite specimens
🔍 Ask questions and learn from others
📸 Show off new finds and collection displays
🌎 Discuss identification, geology, and mineralogy
🤝 Help grow a positive, knowledgeable community
Whether you have one favorite crystal or hundreds of museum-quality specimens, you’re welcome here.
Come help us build a community where curiosity, education, and appreciation for Earth’s natural treasures come first.
Hope to see you over at r/mineralcollectors!

Feel free to reach out to myself or u/slogginhog! 💜

This inclusion is often mislabeled as rutile, cacoxinite, Super 7, etc. But I have honestly never seen a piece with this much in it! It's actually very pretty. Super happy to have this crazy piece.

Show me yours!

Can you help me? (Advice wanted) Identifying Black Crystals?

Hello everyone on this sub! I’ve been collecting crystals since my childhood and I haven’t always kept great notes on them, which I’m going through the process of doing now. I have a variety of black crystals and I’m not sure what they are, so I’ve included some photos and was wondering if anyone could help me figure them out? For some I have ideas, and others I really don’t know.

Most of these would have been bought from high-street crystal shops, with some potentially from more independent and specialist crystal shops. Not just gift shops, but nothing too pricey. The skull would be the most expensive, and even then I think my most expensive crystal skulls cost a maximum of £70.

Descriptions for each picture, in order:

  1. Roughly-shaped black stone, shiny on all but one side- so, I assume, polished. Texture almost like calcite (not sure how to describe it- not quite glassy and not plasticky, but also distinct from most of my other stones. Not as heavy as it looks. My best guess is obsidian.
  2. Stone egg, black with pretty evenly distributed grey spotting/webbing. Some spots have less spotting and the pale grey veins are clearer. There’s a couple of specks of what look to be a desaturated dark green, and one tiny fleck of orange-red, both only noticeable upon close inspection. Feels quite cold, is quite heavy, and not especially shiny but not matte either.
  3. Small shiny tumbled stone, grey/black and striped almost like brushstrokes. There is a pale tan vein running through it, which impacts the shape, and each side of the vein are a few millimetres of solid black.
  4. Small reasonably shiny tumbled stone, mostly black with dark green patterning. There are green spots with thin black borders before the grey-green patterning fills the gaps between them. My closest guess here is a low-grade kambaba jasper, but I could definitely be wrong.
  5. A black carved crystal skull, almost matte in texture, smooth but not shiny. Even in colour and texture, no flecks, patterning, or veins of any kind. It’s quite lightweight. I found a few photos of similar skulls which are made of obsidian, so that’s a definite possibility, though the texture is considerably different to the first potential obsidian I know there’s a lot of variety in how they’re polished and presented.
  6. A shiny white tumbled stone with small black flecks. The white is very milky and lacking any blue flash, but the closest comparison I’ve found so far is white labradorite/“rainbow moonstone”. I think that’s the likely answer, but wanted to check in case anyone has any better suggestions.
  7. A small tumbled stone, shiny, and slightly textured. The texture is almost like scratches, it’s uneven and speckled and forms a couple of lines. It’s mostly black, but there’s a patch which appears a rust-brown when the light hits it right, which I think shows in the picture.
  8. A small tumbled stone, looks black with pale stripes in low light but is actually a mix of dark grey and desaturated greens. The white striping isn’t particularly neat, and includes a larger patch on one side.

9 & 10. The last two photos are the same stone, as it was hard to capture the most identifying features. A shiny tumbled black stone with translucent patches which appear to show pale areas inside. There is quite significant banding when you look closely. My assumption on this one is an agate.

My Collection ✨🔮 Orpiment Tower

This was sold as sulfur which is normally one shade and highlighter yellow. I figured it was sulfur and some other compounds and it is, sulfur and Arsenic… Ar(2)S(3) aka Orpiment.

It has a faint smelly kinda smell that bubble bee jasper does not half which was another guess of mine.

It’s incredibly soft with a harness of 1.5-2. Decided to put this one somewhere safe and contained lol.

I’m sorting through my collection and would appreciate any help in inserting these. For some reason, I think it’s either Jet or Shungite, but can’t remember which

I’ve had these two for a while and thought I’d share them. I love the clarity and diasterism on the first one and the 12 ray asterism on the second.

Got this for my birthday from Etsy. 2 pounds 5 ounces. I was planning on making cabs with it, but I think it looks great as a single piece and may just polish it up and stick it on a stand with a back light.

Thoughts?
