REQUEST r/whatsthisrock is Recruiting New Mods!!!

Hello, r/whatsthisrock community!

Our subreddit has grown significantly, and with that growth comes an increase in rule-breaking comments, low-effort jokes, and automated spam. As you know, this is a strict, science-focused Identification community. We require all comments to provide a physical rock/mineral ID or directly contribute to the scientific identification process.

We do not allow folklore, superstitions, unhelpful jokes, or arguments (that are not constructive) in our identification threads.

To keep our queue clean and maintain the quality of the sub, we are opening applications for new moderators.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Queue-Clearers: Your primary job will be opening the Mod Queue, reviewing reported comments, and removing non-ID responses or banning spammers cleanly and efficiently.
  • Thoroughness: We need people who actually know our rules (and Reddit Mod Code of Conduct) and enforce them uniformly without getting dragged into emotional arguments with users in modmail.
  • Consistency: You don't need to spend all day on Reddit, but we need active eyes consistently contributing to monitoring the sub.

Before you click the application link below, you must thoroughly read our community sidebar and rules page. Please also review Reddit's Moderator Code of Conduct. We have implemented automated gatekeeping measures to weed out low-effort or automated submissions. If you do not follow the exact instructions hidden within our documentation, your application will be instantly and permanently deleted without review. If you are ready to help us clean up the queue and keep the focus on rock identification, please apply using the link below:

(Click here to apply to the Mod team!) https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf1gdFvlauq1y6F22S7cCUzIptVkYP8oOBmS6XS68Bz-YWykA/viewform?usp=sharing&ouid=103554154763378178256

Thanks for your help keeping our subreddit clean and running smoothly. Rock on!

REQUEST I bought this bracelet in gulf shores yesterday thinking maybe it was real turquoise, it is cold to the touch and it passed the melt test, but idk

It feels fairly soft and has a little weight to it, I know it's not plastic but I really wanted some real turquoise bc i know it's all drying up. The lines running through are kind of a gold color and some of them cut into whatever material this is. Inside the drill holes appears to mostly be white or gray, and i could convince myself that some of them are a lighter blue.

This is most likely from a beach in northeast IL, BUT it could be from somewhere in Europe (Spain, Germany, or London).

First 2 pics are dry, the rest are wet. This is after stg 1 in my tumbler.

Pls be nice if my ID is totally wrong, I'm new at this!

I was gifted these two larger chunks of labradorite and just don’t have the time to learn the art of lapidary…. So I don’t really have a use for these…. What should I do with these?

REQUEST Rocks being tested in my kiln for glaze-making (seeking IDs).

Victoria, Australia.

I am a beginner rock enthusiast and potter who is using 'found materials' and rocks to make ceramics. I am sorry in advance if this picture is not enough to go on for an ID, but I would love to know if any of these are able to be identified or if you have any info for me to further investigate to discern the types. They are all currently in my kiln being heated to 1285 degrees celcius.

The sandstone I picked up as an offcut from a stonemason, the others were found in random places, probably not in their place of origin. I've tried the basalt before, which produces a glassy/glossy brown glaze.

Thanks kindly rock community!

Can anyone tell me what this shiny black crystal is, and the host rock that it’s in? Found at high elevation in Colorado mountains. Sorry I can’t be more specific in location, it was many years ago when I was a kid.

IDENTIFIED (limestone with boring sponge holes) A rock found on a rocky beach on Brač, Croatia.

Hello, my mom found this rock while on vacation in Croatia. My first thought(absolute zero knowledge on the subject) was that it might be fossilized wood with thermite holes in it. I did a bit of testing and i would say it would be a 4 on the mohs hardness scale. Clipper lighters are for scale lmao.

REQUEST Glass or stone?

Thumbnail

These were part of a bracelet in my bag of random jewelry supplies, some have almost perfect straight lines and look like glass, but ones like these make me think otherwise. There was another bracelet that was the same shape but definitely stone, so I'm leaning towards this being real, but I have no idea what they are. If anyone can identify them I'd be super grateful!

Recently found my old rock collection in my mother’s attic and took a particular interest in this softball-sized sphere that had some crystalline/shiny spots on the exterior. We did two cycles of freeze/thaw then got impatient and started bashing it with a hammer. I’m super satisfied to finally have this thing open and am very curious as to what type of rock/mineral this might be. Collected in Kentucky.

REQUEST Quartz or Agate?

Thumbnail

Found in Leavenworth, WA: At first glance I assumed this was quartz because it’s clear, but after looking at it closer it seems like it has some pretty distinctive banding in the bottom (pic 3 for close up). Is this still classified as quartz, or is it agate because it’s banded?
