Am I losing my mind, or is DTS-HD MA genuinely better than DTS:X and TrueHD Atmos tracks?
I was comparing the audio tracks on my Fast & Furious UHD remux via passthrough to my sound system, keeping the volume locked at 15 across the board. To my absolute shock, the DTS-HD MA track completely blows the other two out of the water.
Before I continue, I tested this with two setups:
UGOOS AM9 Pro with DV FEL and SamuriHL Build and PM4K addon
Nvidia Shield with Plex App
The plex server is local and the file playback was done via DIRECT PLAY. So nothing was lost or being transcoded. The file is a full 80GB remux.
The opening race scene with Ja Rule, Vin and Paul Walker etc.
Scene 1: First Race - license plate flies off:
* TrueHD/Atmos: Weakest of the bunch. Light immersion, just a faint emphasis on the right side
* DTS:X: Better - you get soundstage on both the right and left sides when the number plate flies past.
* DTS-HD MA: Insane. Way louder, more aggressive, bassier, punchier and the license plate actually sounded like it skimmed right past my head.
Scene 2: First Race - Vin Diesel hits the NOS and crosses the finish line
* DTS-HD MA: Deep, room-shaking bass right beneath my feet, with a hard-hitting, aggressive zoom across the finish line. When Vin hits the NOS, you immediately feel that hit under your feet from the sub. When he crosses over the line you hear a loud scream.
* DTS:X & TrueHD Atmos: Thin, light, and flat. Absolutely no rumble under my feet when the NOS hits, and the finish line cross sounds totally muted by comparison with a feint scream. It's a night-and-day difference.
The results above were found across both devices.
Can anyone explain what on earth is going on here? Why is the uncompressed non-object track outperforming the object-based tracks by this much? I am curious what your thoughts are based on your own experiences.
I think you can reproduce the same levels of energy with the Atmos and DTS X track by pumping up the volume more. But man I am shocked.
