Miscellaneous The One Year Passing of GM Daniel Naroditsky

This post will be a bit personal as well as business. Many of you know that I am the Communications Manager for the Charlotte Chess Center, and you've gotten to know that because of the discussions we've had here about Danya, his passing, the Memorial, and now we have the upcoming Fellowship. Also I'm the most long-winded person ever, so be prepared for a lengthy post.
I hate that when I mentally think of my past year, it doesn't begin in January, it begins on October 20th, which is when I found out about Danya's passing -- when CCC Executive Director and Danya's best friend, Peter Giannatos, told me "Whatever you do, don't look on our socials." I of course immediately looked and thought we were hacked, but when he told me it was true, I cried so hard my husband ran into my office trying to figure out what was wrong. All I could do was point at my screen.
Since that day, many lives have been upended. As a mother myself, I cannot imagine the pain Elena, his mother, has been through. His brother's children will not know their uncle, and many holidays will be absent one member. For Peter and Sasha, I cannot comprehend how they managed to wake up the next day, and the next day, and the next day. I've hugged crying students. One student made a chess.com page that continues to have a countdown of days it has been since Danya passed. Danya's personal student wrote a note and gave it to Peter to be buried with Danya. I've helped friends, family, students, players, organizations etc. And who am I? I was just a colleague and a chess mom. Close enough to help and be supportive, but far enough away that I could still function.
The CCC was thrust in the global spotlight in a way that I was not prepared for. We are, at our core, a small business. We were approached by NBC, CNN, BBC, Daily News, NY Times, Time Magazine -- I can't even remember all of them. I kicked reporters out of the CCC while tournaments were happening and told them to stop harassing our kids. Because despite Danya's overwhelming presence, many of our littles haven't interacted with him. No reason to make them and parents uncomfortable. Many of us hunkered down and kept to ourselves while we processed what our community would become without our shining star.
And I don't mean that just from his reputation. For months, we've heard condolences, stories, bittersweet moments from those who met Danya. How could we not? We was so uniquely special--kind and brilliant and funny and notoriously witty and just this amazingly wonderful person. He'd be a shining star even without the fame.
I know a lot of you had doubts about our intentions with the fundraiser and the Naroditsky fund. We've been challenged, called names, threatened, and more. I hope this has since been alleviated a bit with the Naroditsky Memorial (NMRB) and the Naroditsky Fellowship, which will give $50,000 to promising American Junior players, much like the Samford Fellowship that Danya himself received. I do not think there has been a single day of work in the past year where I have not thought about Danya or ensuring his legacy. And this is true for many of us--we're already planning the next NMRB and are announcing the Fellowship committee today.
In fact, let me say it here.
The Naroditsky Fellowship Committee is comprised of:
- Chair - IA Grant Oen (CCC Events Director and close friend of Danya)
- Hikaru Nakamura
- Sam Shankland
- Robert Hess
- Kayden Troff
- John Bartholomew
- Eric Rosen
If any of you know anything about Danya, you'll understand why those players were chosen.
My life, Peter's life, Grant's life, and the CCC in general has spent a large part of the last year honoring Danya and working hard to secure his legacy. Cliche or not, love it or leave it, but people say that the time someone really dies is the last time their name is uttered. In that way, we want to ensure Danya never dies.
But honestly, I'd rather just have him here, and have him home, and teaching our students, and streaming. I want him constantly making me laugh during long photography sessions. I want to be his bodyguard again and shoo away people when he was worn out.
I know many of us will be feeling a renewed sense of grief. I am always a mess leading up to the anniversary of my father's passing, and I know many of you--despite not necessarily being physically close to Danya--will be feeling similarly. Please be good and be well today, to both yourself and others.
Thanks for reading,
Kelly

News/Events WIM Rachael Li is 2026 U.S. Women’s Champion!
Rachael has a break out 2026, when she ranked 2nd in the US Juniors Girls Championship, ranked 2nd in FIDE World Youth Chess U16 Girls, and finally won the US Women Championship.
In her run, she was undefeated when facing the previous US Women Champions (defeat Irina, Jenniffer and Nazi; draw Carissa and Anna Zatonskih). Her most important win was against Alice Lee, when she defeated Alice in round 6 with black and became the co-leader. From round 7, despite the pressure from Alice, she continued to hold on to the 1st position and never let it go. Especially in round 9 and 10, she grinded the win from equal positions against Nazi and Rose in the end game.
She also secures her last WGM norm and her first IM norm. With this win, she will gain 50 rating points and and become #3 Women in the ranking of US Women, #5 World Junior Girl U20, and #71 in the ranking of US.
An impressive win and hope that she can continue her form in the future!

Strategy: Openings The Smith-Morra Gambit hurts my brain
I'm trying to learn some anti-mainline Sicilian openings like the Grand-Prix Attack and the Smith-Morra Gambit. The Grand-Prix is straightforward at least in intent. The Smith-Morra is chaotic as all hell.
Like, what do you mean this is one of the possible positions just a handful of moves into the opening and it's an equal evaluation? How many variations do I have to learn before I've studied this opening?
The thing is, this is absolutely my playstyle (I play the Halloween Gambit as White, for instance). But I'm afraid I've bit off more than I can chew with this one.
What opening would you recommend against the Sicilian and what are some good sources to learn it?

Miscellaneous It's so hard to get good at chess. Bassem Amin reached 2700+. He also became a medical doctor.
It's kind of impressive when people reach an exceptionally high level in chess while also excelling in other demanding fields.
I recently learned about Bassem Amin, while searching for a chess game by Egyptian player. Amin is an Egyptian chess grandmaster and medical doctor whose peak FIDE rating was 2712. Apparently, he's the only medical doctor to have ever reached a FIDE rating of 2700+.
He also won the African Chess Championship seven times (2009, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2022, and 2024).
According to his Wikipedia page, he's one of only eight doctors who are chess grandmasters. Others are Alex Sherzer, Helmut Pfleger, Yona Kosashvili, Dan Zoler, Diego Valerga, Zhao Zong-Yuan and Muhammed Batuhan Daştan.
I already find it incredibly difficult to improve at chess while trying to live my fairly undemanding life, so continuing to climb at these high levels and getting major results while also either pursuing or working in a demanding field is quite amazing. Must be some talent there.
Just thought this was an interesting fact worth sharing with fellow chess lovers.
Edit: in this very short video, he talks about crossing the 2700.

News/Events PSA: The US championship might not be over yet - Caruana could catch So
Right now, Wesley So looks to be taken down by the field's wooden spoon Sam Sevian - while Caruana has a good grip on Liang.
Bring up the popcorn for today, there are decent chances for popcorn tomorrow too.

Chess Question 1300-1500 elo tired of getting mated with French defense… any aggressive openings recommendations for black ?
I feel the French defense is too defensive/passive for my play style. On white I try to play gambits whenever I get the chance. Any aggressive sac material opening recommended for black?

Chess Question What's the point of Bc5 here (Vienna Gambit), if white is going to play d4 and kick the bishop anyway? (probably noob question, sorry)

Strategy: Openings Strategic ideas in the 7.Nd5 Sveshnikov?
Hi,
I've spent lots of efforts on my openings, but I really struggle to understand the ideas for Black in the 7.Nd5 variation of the Sveshnikov (1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 e5 6. Ndb5 d6 7. Nd5 Nxd5 8. exd5 Nb8).
For context I've got 2100-2300 Lichess Elo on Bullet, Blitz and Rapid.

I can deal well enough with trick variations like Qf3-Qc3 or Be3 in combination with a4-a5, but I've got a problem in facing a slow, smothering queenside expansion by White.
It typically continues 9. c4 Be7 10. Bd3 O-O 11. O-O f5 reaching this position

And then White continues with f3 or f4, and slowly gets in Be3, a3, b4 threatening c5. Often the knight goes back to c3. Attempts to block the expansion by any moves ...b6, ...a6, or ...a5 create too many weaknesses in my experience.
Playing active with Qb6+, Na6, Nc5 feels like an incorrect gamble and is usually also pushed back by Be3, a3 and b4.
I typically play Bf6 and hope that White opens up the position in the center, but stronger opponents don't play along. :-)
Instead of f5 I also tried Bd7 often, which was Stockfish's recommendation. But I don't understand the idea behind it. After Nc3 the d7 square is blocked for my knight.
So what's the ideal setup for Black? And what's Black's idea if White just shuffles around, or very carefully prepares the queenside expansion? To me there are no obvious pawn breaks to play for, or target squares for pieces.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
