Rant Latest trick by cab drivers

So this has happened to me too many times now for it to not be seen as a pattern.

I book a cab.
Sometimes the driver calls, sometimes they don’t.
Nothing about the amount is discussed prior to me boarding the cab.
They arrive at my location.
I give the OTP and board.

They immediately say “Sir oru 50 rs sethu kuduthurunga sir” (sir give 50 rs extra)

I ask them “Why couldn’t you have told me this before you came to pick me up? I could’ve cancelled.”

They’ll give me some lame excuse about how it’s long distance or about not getting a return ride or something.

It becomes a whole argument and my peace is ruined.

They think if they ask this way people will pay them. What’s funny is that it’s gotten to a point now where if a cab driver doesn’t ask me for extra, I voluntarily pay them extra, just because they’re one of the few decent ones left.

I’ve not been able to book a cab in peace in the near past!

Rant Genuine question to solo car commuters in Chennai: Why block the two-wheeler gaps at corners?

I want to preface this by saying I completely understand the appeal of cars. If it's raining, if you're carrying a lot of shopping bags, or just for general safety on our roads—it makes total sense.

But on a regular sunny day, if you are just one person commuting to the office with a single bag, wouldn't a bike make much more sense? Solo car commuters take up so much space and heavily contribute to the daily traffic gridlock.

My main frustration, and the real question I want to ask, is about road corners. Often, there is a small gap on the edge or corner of the road. As a car driver, you can clearly see your vehicle won't fit through it, or you simply can't move forward yet because of the traffic ahead. But instead of leaving that gap open for bikes to squeeze by, people pull up and block the corner completely.

If you know you can't move forward anyway, why block the path? Why not leave that little bit of space so two-wheelers can keep moving? I'm genuinely trying to understand the thought process here from the perspective of car drivers.

Also, regarding those absolutely narrow streets we have all over the city—is it really necessary to squeeze a car down there when it barely fits?

And a genuine question: don't you get annoyed trying to find parking every time you go somewhere? As a bike rider, I can park almost anywhere. The stress of hunting for a car parking spot just seems exhausting to me.

I'm genuinely trying to understand the thought process here from the perspective of solo car drivers.

AskChennai Dog Rescue Contacts Please

There is sick dog in our area, looks like a it was a formerly raised as pet and abandoned due to old age and sickness. He need some medical attention and we are quite skeptical to take him to the vet ourselves as he looks like he has some skin issue. Plus he also needs rehoming.

I've contacted multiple ngos from Google but all them ate either ignoring calls and refusing rescues. Please share contacts.

Area: Virugambakkam (around koyembedu and vadapalani)

AskChennai I think most of us are gonna die alone

Any one else wonder where we are all heading if we continue to be lonely like this? Once you miss the dating train in your 20s, it seems like its pretty much over in this city. I don't think there's a good ending to this lonliness epidemic, I'm seeing a lot of people turn up at the movies alone nowadays, it's sad to see. Sollunga chennaiites, enna pannalaam.

Non-Political News Severe weather alert - Genuine or Mistake

Post image

Got a severe weather alert saying extremely heavy rainfall is gonna happen across Chennai.

The alert overrode the YouTube short I was watching and I wasn’t able to switch it off until it stopped ringing after 10 seconds.

Is it a trial run or is it genuine. Can someone enlighten us

Rant 26, Unemployed, Nonexistent Treatment for AuDHD in India

Beyond words, beyond how us humans here represent ourselves in 2D space; Neurodivergence is an entirely different dimension, a different set of operations compared to neurotypicals.

I'm 26, Salem–Chennai. I discovered my AuDHD just two months ago. I quit my Electrical Design Engineering job two and half months back because of how taxing and severely incompatible I was. My autistic working style, and my inability to fit in with the workplace. My assumption was, "It's the workplace problem". A part of me still feels like it's a me-problem, and the guilt sits heavily. For the past two weeks, it feels my mental floor has shifted and vanished to me, and now I'm in this dark, incomprehensible episode.

India is severely compromised when it comes to acknowledging neurodivergence. Even the National Mental Helpline bot asks you depression screening questions and calls it a day. Everyone here carries the stigma that pharmacology and therapy are moral failure and western indulgence, and endurance is virtue, stoicism is strength. Thought I'd just vent here because it feels hopeless at 2:57AM.

Is there anyone here in the sub who received proper acknowledgement and care?

Rant Poonamallee to Vadapalani Metro

Really a convenient route to have and grateful for that.

But feels like the inauguration was rushed with incomplete work. All the stations between Porur and Vadapalani are non functional.

But that's not even the problem, but the train was really buggy. Although the train did not reach the station, the announcement said the train reached and leaving. Then after 2 minutes the train arrived. Looks like some sync issues.

The locopilot or the driver was applying brakes aggressively in the middle of nowhere. The train has limited handle bars and many passengers couldn't balance themselves.

It's too early to complain, which I understand. But if they are functioning the metro like this, I wonder if it is really safe to travel in it at the moment.

Thoughts?

Rant Worst movie experience - AGS Maduravoyal

Yesterday, I had booked Jailer 2 in AGS Maduravoyal . This was night show 11.15 PM one. I started by 10.30 knowing there was heavy rain and i stay in Ramapuram, barely 4.5 kms from the theatre and since it was raining i took my car and went to the movie. It was heavy rain , no doubts and there was traffic from the theatre to 500m.

I completely understood that it was because of rain and the street was a bit narrow there usually would be traffic , but this was awkwardly more and we were literally standing 200m from theatre for almost 25 mins and it was already 11.20, then it slowly moved and we reached gate by 11.40 and when we tried entering the gate was closed and my friend got down and asked the security over there where could we park and the answer was literally we dont have any space u can park anywhere u want we wont be responsible for parking as the parking is full . In the midst of pouring rain we were asking him how can be soo easy on this and they just walked away. I was seeing already 2 cars in front of the closed gate honking continuously and the whole street was jammed due to these guys and i had no option rather to go to the highway and find a spot to park . As i moved towards highway i could see many had parked car just like that in petrol bunk and in streets and they were running to the theatre. I had got to the highway and found a spot near ATM parked it and the distance from my car to theatre was 150m. I had to run from there & got fully wet . It was my mistake i forgot my umbrella which i usually have in my car.

As i reached theatre around 12.10 am , i could see people of my situation fighting with the management and they was just walking away. My cloths were dripping and i didnt want to miss movie so i went to the theatre all wet and sat in the seat . The AC was terribly cold and i was shivering all through the movie . Though the movie was great, The chillness and fear of parking my car in a random spot at highway has ruined the whole experience and to top that i had ordered coffee which was the only hot beverage available it was literally shit. I could not feel coffee it was just milk and sugar.

Worst part is i missed the Thalaivar intro scene

My movie night was seriously ruined by AGS & am never ever booking again at this theatre again.

AskChennai What’s the point of e-Jagriti if Chennai Consumer Court still asks for physical copies?

I wanted file a consumer complaint online through the e-Jagriti portal thinking it was supposed to be completely paperless.

When i went to District Consumer Court, they're asking to submit multiple physical printouts before they proceed.

Why have an online portal if we still have to take leave, print hundreds of pages, and do manual filing anyway?

Has anyone else in Chennai dealt with this recently? Are physical copies actually mandatory, or is there a way around it?

Rant Why are schools taking children to movies filled with graphic violence?

I recently watched a movie in a theater that contained extreme violence, bloodshed, several head-chopping scenes, and glamour-focused songs and camera angles. This movie is not suitable for children. Young kids should not be exposed to such violent and disturbing content, even if the film has a UA certificate. In my view, it should have received an A certificate.

I also saw a fan post on X, along with a video of a private school taking children to watch this movie. The post claimed that the UA certificate allowed schools to take kids to the cinema and described this as an advantage that could help the film reach ₹1,000 crore.

Are we seriously using children to increase box-office collections? Are schools using trending movies to promote themselves without thinking about what kids are being exposed to?

I have seen the same thing happen with other highly violent movies as well.

Kids' mental health should matter more than box-office numbers or social media attention. Not every movie is suitable for every age group.

AskChennai Flipkart return pickup issue involving incorrect delivery partner?

I ordered a pair of Crocs worth ₹5,000 during a sale on Flipkart, but I received the wrong size. I raised a return request on October 10, and Flipkart initiated the pickup on the same day. However, the pickup kept getting delayed from their end, even though I repeatedly confirmed my availability for pickup through WhatsApp.
Unfortunately, I had to travel yesterday, so I left the package with my neighbour. I also had a Myntra delivery scheduled, which was handled by Ekart. The delivery agent called me to confirm the delivery and mentioned that he had also come for the pickup. My neighbour handed him the Crocs, assuming he was there to collect the return.
Later, when I checked the Flipkart app, the return status still showed “Pickup Pending.” I contacted Flipkart customer support and learned that the assigned pickup partner was supposed to be Shadowfax, not Ekart.
I then contacted Myntra support to see if they could help identify or track the delivery agent, but they said they were unable to help.
Now the product is no longer with me, and Flipkart still shows the return as pending.

Has anyone faced a similar situation? How can I trace the Ekart delivery agent and get Flipkart to acknowledge the return and process my refund? Any advice on how to escalate this would be appreciated.

AskChennai Gym reccos for getting back to fitness

Vanakkam Chennai

I am a 30 year old obese woman looking to get back to gym. I used to be an active walker and sports enthusiast until 2.5 years ago when I had to get a surgery for a sports injury in the knee.

I do play again these days but I am looking into actively changing my life and becoming stronger. I also work a very stressful job and looking forward to the gym being a mental break as well.

Please recommend some good gyms near Nungambakkam/Kodambakkam/Vadapalani areas to get back.

Obesity is also a touchy topic mentally for me but I really want to work on myself and do better. I want a gym environment that also doesn't judge or break me down mentally.

I saw a few gyms in my research like 77 fitness, aviate (too expensive if the 49k price I saw is right). I tried going to the gym in VR mall also - really liked it but couldn't maintain a routine as it was not near my office or my home.

Many thanks, Chennai
