ROLL ON YOU BEARSSS JKS not starting!?
Let’s go Brosseau!

Join the Discord before kickoff.
There's something a little different about a night game at Memorial Stadium, and tonight should have an especially Berkeley feel. After a warm, sunny afternoon, temperatures should cool noticeably once the sun goes down, with clear skies and the air settling into the upper 50s later in the evening. It's that familiar warm-day-to-cool-night transition in Strawberry Canyon that makes an evening kickoff at Memorial feel different from an afternoon game.
Adding to the atmosphere, tonight is Cal's first-ever “Grateful Bears” game, celebrating the Grateful Dead and the band's deep connection to Berkeley and the Bay Area. The Dead played more concerts on or near the Cal campus than at any other university in the country, so the theme feels particularly appropriate for a Saturday night in Strawberry Canyon. Between the music, the Berkeley crowd and a ranked opponent under the lights, this should be one of the more distinctive home-game atmospheres of the season.
And it's a good setting for what feels like an important test for this Cal team.
Last week's 25-20 win over Virginia Tech felt significant. Cal entered that game having lost three of four, changed offensive play callers midway through the previous game, and was missing two of its most important players in Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele and Kingston Lopa. Yet the Bears found a way to win behind Jackson Brousseau, Pat McCann's offense and a strong defensive performance.
Now JKS and Lopa are expected back, and the question becomes whether Virginia Tech was the beginning of Cal figuring things out or simply one gutsy win. Tonight against a ranked Wake Forest team should give us a much better answer.
Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele (QB, #3) returns after missing Virginia Tech with a concussion, but the offense he comes back to is different from the one he left.
Jackson Brousseau (QB, #11) completed 29 of 43 passes for 321 yards against Virginia Tech and led a 75-yard game-winning drive in the final minute. More importantly, it was Cal's first full game with Pat McCann calling the offense after Tosh Lupoi moved the play-calling duties away from Jordan Somerville at halftime against UNLV.
This isn't a quarterback controversy. If healthy, JKS is the starter. The interesting question is whether Cal can preserve what worked under McCann while taking greater advantage of JKS's particular strengths. We saw better sequencing, more intermediate throws and a passing game that generally looked less dependent on horizontal concepts. JKS gives McCann a stronger arm and potentially more ability to stress a defense vertically.
I'm especially interested in whether Ian Strong (WR, #9) can build on his 97-yard game against Virginia Tech and whether Cal can make Wake defend the entire field rather than crowding the line of scrimmage. The challenge is that Wake has been disruptive up front, while Cal's pass protection remains a concern and starting tackle Jimothy Lewis (OT, #77) has been dealing with an injury.
This won't necessarily be an easy welcome-back game for JKS, but it should give us our clearest look yet at what the McCann/JKS version of the offense can become.
Kingston Lopa (DB, #2) is also expected back tonight, and his return couldn't come at a better time. Wake quarterback Gio Lopez (QB, #3) has been one of the most efficient quarterbacks in the country, accounting for 20 touchdowns with only one turnover this season. Wake also expects leading receiver Carlos Hernandez (WR, #8) to play.
That creates probably the most interesting matchup of the night: a Wake offense that almost never gives the ball away against a Cal secondary that's at its best when creating turnovers. Lopa already has five interceptions this season and gives Cal another playmaker in the back end.
But defending Lopez isn't simply about coverage. His mobility creates the kind of problem that has hurt Cal before. If the Bears devote extra attention to Wake's receivers, Lopez can exploit scrambling lanes. If Cal commits another defender to containing him, Wake gets more favorable passing matchups.
The key may be whether Cal can generate pressure while still keeping Lopez contained. If Lopa and the secondary can force him into the kind of mistake he has almost completely avoided this season, Cal's upset chances improve dramatically.
There was plenty to like last week. Cal moved the football, the offensive line protected Brousseau much better than it had protected the quarterbacks earlier in the season, the defense held a productive Virginia Tech offense to 20 points, and the Bears made the plays they needed in the final minute.
But not everything was fixed. Cal still committed 99 yards in penalties, continuing a season-long trend of making games harder than they need to be. That matters even more tonight because Wake has scored 57 and 38 points in its last two games and has enough offensive firepower to punish extra possessions, extended drives and short fields.
Cal proved last week that it can overcome mistakes. Tonight I'd rather see whether it can stop making so many of them.
A win would move the Bears to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the ACC, with back-to-back conference victories and a win over a ranked opponent. At that point, Virginia Tech starts looking less like an isolated result and more like the beginning of a turnaround.
The market currently has Wake favored by roughly 9.5 to 10.5 points, with the total around 53.5. The moneyline is roughly Wake -350 and Cal +275, which implies an expected score around Wake 32, Cal 22.
My baseline is somewhat closer: Wake 30, Cal 24, with roughly a 70% chance of a Wake win and 30% chance of a Cal win. Wake deserves to be favored. They're 5-1, playing extremely well offensively and have been much more consistent than Cal.
But I find the spread more interesting than the straight-up projection because Cal +9.5 or +10.5 gives the Bears considerable room if the team we saw against Virginia Tech — now adding JKS and Lopa — represents real improvement.
This is the straightforward Wake-cover outcome. Wake's front creates pressure, JKS struggles somewhat in his first game back, Cal can't establish much of a running game, and the Bears again hurt themselves with penalties or special teams. Lopez doesn't necessarily need a huge night; Wake just stays efficient enough to build separation as the game progresses.
Betting angle: Wake -9.5 / Wake team-total Over.
This is the game script that makes Cal +9.5 or +10.5 attractive to me. McCann doesn't have to turn Cal into a 40-point offense. The Bears simply need to sustain drives, use JKS effectively and avoid repeatedly putting the defense in bad situations. Lopa's return also gives Cal a better chance of limiting Wake's explosive passing game.
There are a lot of plausible scores — 27-23, 30-24, 31-27, 28-21 — in which Wake wins but Cal still covers comfortably. That's why the spread is probably my favorite pregame angle.
Betting angle: Cal +9.5, and even better if you can get +10.5.
The ingredients for an upset aren't difficult to identify, but Cal probably needs several of them to happen at once. The Bears need to force turnovers, McCann's offense needs to continue progressing, JKS has to create a few explosive plays, and Cal can't commit another double-digit penalty total.
Wake has been extremely good at protecting the football, so this script likely involves Lopa and Cal's secondary doing something most defenses haven't managed against Gio Lopez. I don't think Cal wins this game close to half the time, but I do think there's a reasonable argument that the Bears win it around 30% of the time with JKS and Lopa back.
At +275 or better, that makes the moneyline an interesting higher-risk option.
Betting angle: Small Cal ML +275 or better.
There's also a path to something like Wake 38, Cal 31. Wake has already demonstrated that it can score in bunches, while Cal's passing game has more upside if McCann can successfully integrate JKS into what worked last week.
That's the path to Over 53.5. I don't like it quite as much pregame because JKS is returning from a concussion and Cal's offense has been inconsistent, but it becomes more appealing if the Bears are protecting well and attacking Wake downfield early. In that case, I might prefer looking for a live Over rather than forcing the bet before kickoff.
For me, it comes down to three questions: Does JKS make the improved McCann offense even better? Can Lopa and Cal's secondary finally force Gio Lopez into mistakes? And was Virginia Tech actually the beginning of a turnaround?
Tonight should tell us a lot more about what this Cal team is going to be over the second half of the season.

I'm thinking of trying it today. I've never done it before but it looks like you can just walk up from that parking lot nearby and doesn't look to difficult of a walk. I would definitely bring my own food and water. I don't know if it fills up or what it's like actually sitting up there. Probably got to pee behind a bush. View looks decent but I'm not sure how much you can actually see the game. I don't know how loud the cannon is from there but I'm guessing it is. Any help would be great.

Is JKS a shoo-in to be the starter at this point? Remember how we stumbled on Mendoza as a backup...

Kudos to the coaches and the offense—especially the line. VT's defense leads the ACC in sacks and we held them to just one. Great offensive scheme and great execution by the players.

I may not be paying for the best cell phone carrier, although not sure it would help? But do think it would be great if one of the top Universities in the nation, located in close proximity to “The Valley”, relatively speaking, should have better WiFi, no?
Is there a reliable and safe WiFi network available at Dialpad Field I’m missing?

The best final score in Cal history! It has only happened one other time.

Not surprisingly coach JF is known for his warm and high energy charisma. Arguably the best opposing team HC post presser when they lost to us. Gave us a ton of credit and even said we well deserve it. Also acknowledged clearly where the team lacked resulting the L.
Last year JW lost my respect big time when he had a few rough post presser where he straight up said his players are immature and made embarrassing plays (I believe the Duke game where we blew an early lead.
Thank you coach JF for your warm words and my hope is our team will live up to the credit given.
Here is the presser

I thought about it but haven't tried it yet. The view looks decent, doesn't look too crowded, and doesn't look too difficult to get there. It seems like you need to bring food, water, and maybe a chair. I doubt there's a bathroom so it seems like you pee behind a bush. I don't know if that's the basic logistics of it all.

Game Information
Cal returns to Berkeley after back-to-back losses, but there was at least one potentially significant development in last week's 39-31 loss at UNLV.
Tosh Lupoi changed offensive play callers at halftime, handing the job from Jordan Somerville to Pat McCann. Cal responded by scoring 24 points in the second half and briefly taking the lead.
Now McCann gets a full week to run the offense.
The catch? We still don't know exactly who he'll have available.
This is the biggest storyline today.
Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele remains questionable after suffering a concussion against UNLV. If JKS clears protocol, he should return to the starting role. If not, Jackson Brousseau will get the start. They are both warming up and it will be a game-time decision.
And based on what we saw last week, Cal should at least feel better about that possibility.
Brousseau came in cold and completed 19 of 32 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns, helping Cal erase a 24-7 deficit and briefly take a fourth-quarter lead.
That also happened after McCann took over the play calling.
So today gives us our first real look at what the offense might look like with McCann running it from the opening drive rather than making adjustments at halftime.
I'm interested in whether we see better sequencing, more intermediate throws, more attempts to create explosive plays and a continued effort to utilize the quarterback's strengths rather than relying so heavily on short perimeter concepts.
Whoever plays QB will face a difficult matchup. Virginia Tech has 18 sacks already and one of the more disruptive defenses Cal has faced, putting even more pressure on an offensive line that has struggled with protection.
The injuries go well beyond quarterback.
Adam Mohammed, Cal's leading rusher, has been downgraded to doubtful after missing the UNLV game. Carter Vargas is already out, meaning Ashten Emory will likely handle much of the work at running back again.
There's better news at receiver: Chase Hendricks, Cal's leader in receptions, has been upgraded to probable.
The defensive injuries may be just as important.
Kingston Lopa remains questionable after leaving the UNLV game on the first defensive snap. Lopa has five interceptions already and has arguably been Cal's most impactful defensive player this season.
Kamar Mothudi is also questionable, while Aiden Manutai appears likely to return.
Virginia Tech isn't healthy either. The Hokies are missing multiple contributors, including several offensive linemen, which could give Cal's defensive front an opportunity to generate pressure.
Depth may end up playing a much larger role today than we would have expected a couple of weeks ago.
This has become the bigger season-long question.
Cal actually outgained UNLV 464-345 last week.
The Bears threw for 395 yards. They rallied from 17 points down. They took the lead in the fourth quarter.
And they still lost.
The biggest reason was self-inflicted damage: Cal finished with 16 penalties for 152 yards.
That follows the Clemson loss, where special-teams mistakes and inconsistent offensive execution repeatedly made life harder for a defense that kept Cal competitive for much of the game.
At some point, these stop being isolated mistakes and become part of the identity of the team.
Virginia Tech presents a good test because the Hokies are talented enough to punish those mistakes.
Quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer has been highly productive and threw for 434 yards last week against Pitt. Virginia Tech still lost that game after committing four turnovers, so both teams come into Berkeley probably feeling like they gave away very winnable games last weekend.
As of this morning, the market has Virginia Tech favored by roughly 10 points, with the total around 53.5.
I think the interesting part is how wide the range of possible outcomes is depending on the game script.
This is probably the clearest path to Virginia Tech covering.
The Hokies' pass rush overwhelms Cal's protection, the Bears struggle to run the ball without Mohammed, and Grunkemeyer takes advantage of a potentially depleted Cal secondary.
Add another round of penalties or special-teams mistakes and Virginia Tech could gradually turn a competitive game into a comfortable win.
This may be the most interesting alternative.
McCann's offense doesn't need to suddenly become explosive. Cal just needs to sustain drives, protect the football and avoid putting its defense in terrible situations.
If the Bears play a cleaner game and the defense keeps Virginia Tech from generating explosive plays, Cal +10 gives the Bears a fairly large margin to work with even if they don't win outright.
For the upset to happen, I think several things probably need to go right.
Cal needs to create turnovers, McCann's offense needs to look materially better than what we saw earlier in the season, and the Bears can't give away points through penalties or special teams.
Virginia Tech showed last week that it can turn the ball over — the Hokies gave it away four times against Pitt.
If Cal can steal a couple of possessions and turn those mistakes into touchdowns, the game gets very interesting.
There's also a plausible 38-31 type game.
Grunkemeyer has shown he can generate a lot of passing offense, while Cal just threw for 395 yards at UNLV and scored 24 second-half points once McCann took over.
If the offensive change is real and Cal's defensive injuries are significant, the current total isn't especially high.
On the other hand, we've also watched Cal score 10 against Clemson and 21 against Syracuse, so there's still a very real scenario where Virginia Tech's pressure shuts down the offense and the game stays under.
For me, that uncertainty is what makes today's game particularly interesting from a betting perspective.
That's really what I'm watching.
The Bears are 2-3 and have lost two straight, but the second half against UNLV provided at least a glimpse of something different offensively.
Now we get to see whether it was a one-half spark or the beginning of an actual adjustment.
Does McCann's offense look different with a full week to prepare?
Can Brousseau keep the offense moving if JKS can't go?
Can Cal survive without Mohammed and potentially Lopa?
And can the Bears finally play a clean game without penalties, special-teams mistakes and other self-inflicted problems making an already difficult matchup even harder?
We're getting to the point in the season where improvement needs to become visible.

Hi everyone, Beaver fan coming in peace.
Back in the day, before I went to my own college, I was an avid supporter of my parents’ Alma mater, your very own Cal Golden Bears. I was such a fan that I begged my dad for a jersey, and was elated when he came home with #10 (Lynch’s second(?) number). What a team that was.. Lynch, Rodgers, Jackson, Mebane, the list goes on..
Having gone to a rival school, my old Cal jersey sits in my closet. I refuse to get rid of it though. Even if there’s no financial value, having Beastmode’s college jersey has some sentimental value. Which leads me to my question.
I figured if I’m not gonna wear it, it would be sweet to try and get it signed and I can put it in my office. Has anyone been able to get something signed by Lynch? Any tips or tricks? I see that he has some Raiders gear for sale on his website, do you think he’d want to be paid for this auto?
