MOD Megathread - r/CRedit FAQs

Hello r/CRedit,

I'm u/soonersoldier33, a long-time and frequent contributor to the sub and several other credit related subs, and recently, I've been given the opportunity to become a mod here at r/Credit. Many of you have probably seen my comments in various threads offering facts, opinions, and advice in the various threads posted on the sub. After destroying my own credit in 2019 (maxed credit cards, charge offs, collections, the works), I began my rebuild in 2021, and I had the great fortune to find this sub. Several of the frequent contributors here at that time provided me invaluable information and guidance to help me through my rebuild, and during that process, I discovered I was/am fascinated by all things 'credit', most specifically the 'secret' and so often misunderstood credit scoring system that is such a major factor in our financial lives. Since 2021, I have become a total FICO metrics junkie, and I have spent countless hours researching and learning about credit scoring, collaborating with others to compile data points and learn from their knowledge and experience, and just glean every morsel of knowledge and information out there in an effort to bring some transparency to the 'black box' that is the FICO scoring system, along with many other aspects of 'credit' separate from just FICO scoring.

I am creating this r/Credit FAQ - Megathread to serve as a central hub to link posts that will cover...well...the most frequently asked questions or most frequently posted topics from our sub. Eventually, I will migrate much of the information in these posts to update the sub's Wiki, but I want to be able to get these in a highly visible location first, where the relevant posts can quickly be referenced and linked as these topics appear in posts to the sub. A little different than the Credit Myth series that fellow contributor u/BrutalBodyShots created to attempt to dispel common, credit-related myths and misconceptions, this megathread will present detailed information that will attempt to simply answer FAQs and/or address our most frequently posted topics. My goal with these posts is to provide factual information about these topics, and anything I include in these posts that is merely opinion will clearly be denoted as such.

I'm going to tackle the most basic ones first...credit reports and scores, FICO scoring, a breakdown of utilization scoring, charge offs and collections, medical collections, etc., but if you have suggestions for topics you'd like to see covered, please list them in the comments to give me ideas. I look forward to providing some content that will be useful to both our sub 'regulars' and to those first discovering our sub. It's going to take a little time to effectively grow this thread to cover many of the 'FAQs', so bear with me, and both positive feedback and constructive criticism are always welcome. I hope this thread grows into a helpful addition to our sub. Til next time...

General Credit Myth mega-thread

Like many other sub regulars, I've found u/BrutalBodyShots' Credit Myth series informative and also helpful in explaining these myths to others. A while ago I started compiling them in order to make it a lot easier to link to them in my comments.

I figure I might as well share the list I made, because more than once I've told people to search through his post history if they want to read them all. Also notice at the end I included several other threads of his that I've found useful, especially the one that contains that utilization flow chart. I can't tell you how much typing that's saved me since he made it.

I'll try to keep this list updated as more Credit Myth threads come out, but even if I fall behind this is a great place to start. And if anyone finds any mistakes or messed-up links, please let me know.

u/BrutalBodyShots on the Credit Myth series:

"I started the Credit Myth series in 2024 after continuously running into the same credit-related misconceptions on these subs. Having fallen prey to almost all of them myself, I completely understand how most believe what are in fact credit myths. It took me years to overcome many of them, so hopefully through the Credit Myth series that process can be significantly shortened for others.

With over 60 of these threads to date, most of the 'big ones' have been debunked at this point. The series isn't yet complete however, and perhaps never will be since over time additional myths seem to surface. If anyone has any ideas for future topics that aren't already covered, always feel free to reach out and let me know.

Special thanks to u/Funklemire for creating this thread and offering to maintain the master list, as well as to u/soonersoldier33 for seeing value in it enough to keep it front and center on r/CRedit."

Car Loan should i refinance my car loan?

Post image
40 Upvotes

Im currently in 16 months of a 60 month car loan, my apr is actually 10.49%, not what the photo says. my car note is $566, but they increased it $186 due to an insurance issue so the auto loan company took out insurance on my car, a whole different story. now that i paid off my CPI, it’s back down to $566, but i was wondering if i should go ahead and do this to save money.

my score is over the place, credit karma says my transunion is at 586, but i got a letter in the mail from discover when i tried to do a credit increase and it’s actually 644. experian says my fico is 634, but when i called online they’re saying it’s actually around 610. i did just have a goodwill adjustment from capital one so maybe that’s what it is.

i do have late payments on my apple card from 2 years ago and all my payments have been on time since then. do you guys think it’s worth it to do a refinance or just wait? i am trying to boost my score to a 680 to do a first time homeowners grant by fall of 2027 as well, which i believe is possible.

also the photo is just an example! im still looking around as i know credit karma isn’t the best place and they earn money if i do switch via their site

ETA: my auto loan is already with my local credit union and all the other unions i need a referral by a cop, firefighter or someone in the military !

General Is it ok to pay off balance asap?

I have two credit cards atm.

I pay off the balance immediately. I have two months with one going on 3, and I’m going on a month with the other one.

Yesterday my credit dropped by 16 points. Im not sure why because I did not request any hard pulls on my credit. I have a feeling that it could be that I overspent about $300 on my Amex card by mistake but I paid it off immediately.

I also believe it could be that I pay my balance off asap and that might have a negative impact on my credit. I am guessing this because I called my credit card provider (Bofa) today to request a credit increase and the rep told me that it would be better to wait until my balance was zero or once I have something on my balance because I will not get the best results with credits on my account.

So I want to ask the community is it ok to pay off immediately or wait for CC providers to ask for payment on app?

TIA!!

General Accounts already reported 60 days delinquent, how would removing 30 days of late payments affect future reporting?

Currently I have a line of credit that has hit the 80 day mark for delinquency and I'm in the end stages of scrambling for any options. My largest concern going forward is the continued impact on my score since it has dropped 200 points in the span of 3 months.

One option presented to me today to keep the account from reaching 90 days deliquent and closing was paying a portion of the balance to essentially remove 30 days from the timeline. If I do this, would it then show a second "60 day" mark in my credit reporting? And could that potentially have as large of an impact as it did previously, or could a second 60 day mark from the same account one month later have a lesser impact? Sorry if anything is unclear, I'm more than happy to clarify anything.

Collections & Charge Offs These are my current accounts in collections. I’m wondering if any and which do pfd.

Post image

It’s late as I’m 28 with a low 500 credit score and 5 collections accounts and a 75% on time payment history. I need to fix it. Also do the late payments associated with them also go away with pfd?

General Debt collection text

After doing a little googling I came across this sub and I hope this is the right place to post this and someone here can help me out.

For two days now I've gotten a text regarding an account with jefferson capital systems from shepherd outsourcing. Both companies I've never heard of before.

The text doesn't have my name and I'm not clicking the link but the phone number seems real (888-251-9830), it also says I can text stop to opt out????

Thing is, I don't have any debt outside of my credit card which I have been regularly paying. My credit score is good and I was part of that big data leak years ago so I froze my account/social right after it happen to keep it from being stolen. I already checked http://annualcreditreport.com and I don't see anything suspicious and all past dept are paid off and closed.

Sooooo what should I do? My parents and fiance are convinced it's a scam but both are real companies.

Should I just ignore the text and wait till they send me something in the mail?

General Why don’t more people that pay rent on time use that build credit???

I leant that you can use your rent payments to build credit and since I’ve never had any problems with rent payments, it seemed like a quick and easy way to build credit without really changing anything else in my lifestyle.

But it doesn’t seem like many people do this and I’m curious why, honestly it’s only because I just checked my credit score today and it went up by around 20 point in the last 3 months due to this and I was pleasantly surprised so I was wondering if there are other people like me that do this.

General Equifax fico Credit score dropped more than the others.

My credit score dropped 10 points in Experian, 14 points TransUnion but 29 points in Equifax (all fico 8 scores)

My score hovered between 750 and 720 before the dip.

To give the bigger picture, in March I got amex gold, April I got both the surpass and Hilton no af, and a month ago I got the aspire (all soft pull after the gold).

My question is why my score dropped way more at Equifax, especially since I did not get any hard pull?

Thanks a lot!

Collections & Charge Offs How to make sure a paid collection will be deleted from my credit history?

Hello!

Today is the first time I have ever checked my credit score, and it is 633. I have limited credit history (3 years and 11 months), few accounts (only one credit card), have never had a loan (I have always paid in cash for every car I’ve bought), and one collection.

I want to pay off this collection in hopes it increases my credit score, although I have read that just paying off a debt does not delete it from my credit record. My 633 credit score is from a FIGO 8 report.

I know from the report that I owe $333 to a dental lab from last year.

Anyways, I have read that before paying off a collection I should get in writing a “pay to delete” plan. I am not sure how to go about doing this with the dental lab. I am also a bit confused on if the dental lab still owns the debt, or if it is now in the hands of a collections agency. My Equifax report lists the dental lab as the original lender, and the agency name provided is a random set of letters and numbers.

All to say: how to I make sure I can pay off the debt in such a way that it improves my credit score?

Thank you for and advice or help!!

Collections & Charge Offs Debt collection

Hello, to make a long story short, I had a student loan that went into default back in 2019/2020. Sept 2019 was the first date of delinquency. It was written as a charge off and fell off my credit score over the summer.

I just received an email now about it from a Debt Collector. Even in the email it states the statute of limitations had been reached so they can no longer sue for it.

Do I need to do anything, I was basically going to ignore the email (never got anything in the mail).

Thanks in advance!

General Need help deciding CC for balance transfer!

I am currently chipping away at my debt and the last bit I have is $7,300. This is currently with an Amex account and the 0% APR is ending in November so now I’m looking for another CC to transfer it over to.

I would love to hear everyone’s experiences with the below banks and who may be more likely to give a higher credit balance. All of these are 0% APR for 21 months.

My FICO score is 750.

  1. CITI DIAMOND PREFERRED - I have had other citi bank cards in the past and currently remain at 0 balance.

  2. WELLS FARGO REFLECT

  3. BANK OF AMERICA MASTERCARD

Thanks in advance!

Collections & Charge Offs Affirm in the hole

Hi everyone, I’m coming here for advice and not judgement.
I am young and stupid, like hardcore an idiot. I have racked up a $3,300 affirm bill that is now at the 120 past due and I’m chipping away at it piece by piece.
I wasn’t in a good financial position and was spending more than I was making and truth be told that is my fault 1000%. I was too loyal to leave my crappy job and now that I finally have I am truly in the hole.

What are my chances are getting my tail sued?
They are all little affirm loans that add up to the balance. And I know I can chip away at them but I know that they can sue me…what are my options here?

General Would this be responsible credit card use?

I'm a college student and after paying off a student loan to save on total interest costs, money is tight. My phone is quite old (parts of it aren't even working anymore) and recently I've been looking at options and I found a good phone for $599. However, I don't have $599. I am bringing in about $500 - $600 a month from my campus job but I'm reserving most of it for next semester's bill. My Amazon Store card would allow me to finance the phone over 12 months at 0% APR and the monthly payments would be a little over $50 with taxes, which I could afford. However, I know it's important to not get into debt or carelessly spend money that I don't have. What do you guys think?

Success Thank you to this group

I haven’t always posted here, but I’ve been taking the advice I gained from this group and I have to thank this group for all the advice. Yesterday, my score hit 737 - a year ago, I was at 625. I really buckled down and paid down debts, paid attention to utilization when I did use my cards, and for the first time in a long time, I feel like I have financial breathing room. It’s the best feeling and it’s all from watching this group and using the wins and advice as motivation to keep going. I want to see how I can keep going and get my score even higher. Thank you, everyone!

General Have had great behavior with credit cards consistently for the past 5 years. My scores still won't budge. Help?

Here are my current FICO scores: Experian 713 | Equifax 715 | Transunion 795

I have 3 credit cards, the newest I opened in 2021 and the oldest I opened in 2018. I pay my cards in full every month and have never carried a balance. I keep my utilization under ~10%. I have no loans at all, having paid off my student loans about 6 years ago. Despite all of this, my credit score has hardly moved, even after getting credit limit increases year over year. I have around 40k credit limit across my three cards.

I am so confused and frustrated because I have done all of the right things for awhile now, but it feels like my score is still only average. Any advice on what to do is seriously appreciated. Thanks in advance.

No Credit Been paying rent from years but barely have any credit Histroy .

Rent comes out of my account every month, on time . has for years . I've never had a credit card though , so there's very little on my credit report .

was looking at bright money and saw that it offers rent reporting . didn't know you could those payments added to your credit report though a service .

has anyone used bright for this ?I'm wondering whether paying for rent reporting is worth it when you're starting with almost no history .

My name is on the lease and i have the payments records . Would be interested to hear from someone in a similar situation especially what showed up on your report and how long it took .

Rebuild Credit Score Around 640, transferring balance to lower utilization, what will happen?

Hi Everyone! So currently I have two cards, one with 0% utilization (USAA SECURED) and another with 95% utilization (AMEX - 1350 balance - $1400CL) Both are about ten years old with perfect payment history. I have charge offs, but at this point they are all paid, one is pending the update to the CBs. I recently did prequals with my banks and was offered $4000 limit card with USAA with a 0% interest rate on balance transfers until May of 2028, as long as I transfer the balance by January 2027.

I accepted the offer and am waiting for the card in the mail. At that point I will transfer my AMEX BALANCE to the NEW USAA - which will put me at $1400 balance on a $4000k limit card. On the same day that this happened, I was prequalified for a Cap One Platinum with $3000 CL, and a USBANK Shield at $1000 CL. I accepted all three. I plan on using the USBANK Shield for monthly recurring charges (apple/netflix/disneyplus/amazonprime) and paying statement in full each month. Those charges have currently been going onto my AMEX. What do you guys think will happen to my score? All the inquiries have already hit and I am still around 636-640 on my credit score.

Just hoping in the long wrong this move will help me increase my score since I'm removing a completely maxed out card and opening up utilization. My plan is to have the transferred balance paid off in 6-8 months. I realize three new cards at once will hurt a bit, but I want to start building the good payment history on the three new cards asap.

TL/DR - Three new cards, two old cards, with a balance transfer. After all is reported this is what the report will look like:

10 year old cards: USAA SECURED $0 Bal/$250 CL, Amex $0 Bal/ $1400CL

New Cards: USAA Rate Promo $1350 BALANCE/ $4000 CL, Cap 1 $0 BAL/$3000CL, USBANK $0BAL/$1,000CL. What do you think will happen to my 640 score?

General 18 future options

Im 18 w/ a 769 score on experian - good amount in savings and pull in $2.5-3k/mo as a new car salesman i get my money via direct deposit

i have two cards open rn with chase and BOA $500 limit and $3.6k limit - what should my focus be to keep improving my score longterm? I keep my utilization low and I'm only opening cards with fat bonuses

should I keep it to my two cards opened? or keep trying to open with better limits so I could utilize more?

I've considered going towards more bank account bonuses too given I get paid w/ direct deposit and its over $1k biweekly

just wondering what directs I can take and what directions I shouldn't take to keep improving my score?

I'm hoping that I can harvest the bonuses for their various versions of this card every 5-6 months or so:

Cornerstone bank has it, also Heartland bank, Preferred Bank, Freedom bank, Forum credit union, MIT federal credit union, any others. This one:

Business Cash Preferred Card

$500 cash back

When you spend $5,000 within the first 150 days

$100 annual statement credit

Applied every year to your account after 11 consecutive monthly software transactions2

Hi! I'm 22 living on my own for the first time after college and I'm trying to fix my credit score. I got a credit card while in school and maxed it out because I was an idiot. I'm just now working on paying it off ($1,200 debt now, was $1,600) and my credit score is rough. Last time I checked, it was 580.
Are there any ways I can work on it to raise my score? I've been making payments of $115 per month for like 3 months now. I haven't been able to just pay it all off but I'm hoping to make a big payment on it soon.
Is there anything else I can do to raise it?
Thank you guys in advance:)
