[MEGATHREAD 2026 H2] Ask generic questions about CMU here.

Do you have a generic question about CMU, like:

  • Which dorm is the best?
  • Does CMU prepare you for grad school?
  • Is <major> difficult?
  • Where should I eat on campus?

Then this is the right place to ask.

Why a megathread?

This megathread is to help prevent top-level posts from being downvoted and then left unanswered. It also provides one thread as a reference for folks with future questions to prevent multiple posts with the same generic questions.

This thread is automatically sorted by "new", so post away, even if there are a lot of comments. There's a new megathread every semester-ish (twice annually).

For best results, search this page, previous megathreads, and the subreddit before posting a question that is identical or very similar to one that's already been asked.

Is this the right place to ask?

We don't allow "chance me" posts, which are posts asking about the likelihood of admissions to CMU. Use dedicated subs like r/chanceme and r/ApplyingToCollege.

r/pittsburgh is generally better resource for questions that aren't specific to CMU, like where to live and where to go grocery shopping.

As a reminder, you can report posts that should be comments in the megathread instead if seeing them posted at top-level bothers you. Please choose "It breaks r/cmu's rules" and then "Use the megathread" as the reason. Similarly, you can report "chance me" posts and comments.

PhD admissions in Robotics

I am a current ECE BS/MS student at CMU with a minor in CS. I am ~2 years out from graduation and was wondering about my PhD prospects outside of ECE and CS. I have a good GPA (+3.9) and have good research (1 poster and 1 project which may become a publication (although that is up in the air)). By the time I apply, I will probably have 1 or 2 more publications (I am taking ~27 units of research Junior Spring and planning on Full Time research in the Summer at a lab at CMU, so I think at least 1 publication should result). I have some awards and scholarships as well.

Should I be fine for getting in here? I am kind of concerned about it since if I don’t get into a decent PhD program and I don’t have a job lined up then I am kind of screwed. If that happens, what should I do?

Any advice on the admissions process?

Should I even go to CMU for a PhD since I heard it is somewhat looked down upon to get all your degrees from one place?

Anything helps!

CMU staff have worse parental leave benefits than faculty do

Maybe birthing staff should be grateful for 12 weeks of leave, but faculty get a whole semester — ~15-16 weeks. (This is paltry in comparison to any other country of similar economic status as the U.S.) Luckily, CMU is asking for input on how to spend its extra $500M. Seems like a good opportunity to me. If you want to advocate for parity and equality, fill out the form!

Academic Probation in CMU’s MSBA Program – Looking for Advice

Hi everyone,

I’m currently pursuing my MSBA at CMU Tepper and was recently placed on academic probation after Mini 1.

I’m quite worried about how this could affect the rest of my program, especially given how short the MSBA program is.

I wanted to hear from current students or alumni who have been through something similar.

  • How difficult is it to return to good academic standing?
  • How strictly are academic probation requirements enforced?
  • Has anyone faced dismissal despite showing improvement?
  • Does probation have any long-term implications for graduation, transcripts, or job opportunities?
  • For MSBA alumni, how much do grades and QPA matter during recruiting?

I’d especially appreciate hearing about firsthand experiences, what happened in similar cases in the past, and any advice on navigating this situation.

Thanks in advance!

Is it too late to join clubs?

I'm a freshman, and I feel like I've been too focused on classes so far as I've spent most of my time studying and haven't really joined any clubs or met new people outside of the first few weeks, and I'm starting to regret it. I've recently been looking into more clubs and found quite a few I'm interested in, like ABTech, ScottyLabs, ASA, ARCC, and maybe sports. Do clubs typically recruit in the spring, or would I have to wait until next year? Any advice or insights are appreciated

Anyone at CMU interested in PM mock interviews?

Hi everyone! I'm a first-year MISM-BIDA student at CMU, currently preparing for Product Manager internship interviews. I'm looking for a mock interview buddy to practice behavioral questions, like leadership, teamwork, conflict, and problem-solving. We could do 30-minute sessions, take turns interviewing each other, and share feedback. Happy to practice regularly too!

Feel free to comment or DM me if you're interested! Would be better if we start tonight or on Monday morning!!!😊

Is cmu going to cook me (ECE)

I am applying to CMU ED (parents are forcing me to) and I am wondering how bad the rigor is at CMU because honestly the project focused learning sounds less stressful and more fun, but I heard that CMU has no social life outside of studying tho. Also for ece majors does it progressively get harder or are the intro classes like insanely hard to weed people out and then classes become easier.

Title: Food options over winter break, especially Christmas? First-year in E-Tower

Hi! I’m a first-year living in Morewood E-Tower, and I’m considering staying on campus over winter break this year. Cooking isn’t very convenient where I live, so I’d likely rely mostly on restaurants, takeout, or delivery.

For anyone who has stayed over a previous winter break:

  • Were any campus dining locations open?
  • Were restaurants in Oakland or Squirrel Hill generally open throughout the break?
  • What did you do for meals on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day?
  • Was it practical to get through the break without cooking regularly? Any specific restaurants you’d recommend?

I’d really appreciate any firsthand experiences or advice. Thanks!

PhD in ML vs LTI vs CS: how different are they really?

Hey everyone!

I'm applying for Fall 2027 PhD at CMU. One thing I'm still trying to figure out is the difference between the three PhD programs: Machine Learning (MLD), Language and Information Technologies (LTI), and Computer Science (CSD).

My research is mostly around foundation models, RL/post-training, efficient fine-tuning, and LLM agents, so I've actually found professors whose work interests me in all three departments.

I know the obvious answer is to prioritize research fit with a potential advisor, and I completely agree with that. But I'm curious about a few other things:

  • Competitiveness: Is there any meaningful difference in how selective these three programs are? I know they're all insanely competitive, but is MLD, for example, noticeably harder to get into than LTI or CSD?
  • Career opportunities: Does graduating from one program versus another make any difference for research scientist positions in industry (frontier AI labs, etc.) or academic careers? Or is it basically all about your advisor and research output?
  • Research flexibility: How easy is it to collaborate with or be advised by professors from other SCS departments once you're admitted? Are the program boundaries actually important in practice?

I'm considering applying to more than one of them, but the application fees add up, so I'm trying to figure out whether that's worth doing.

Would especially love to hear from current PhD students, alumni, or anyone familiar with these programs.

Thanks!

CMU Architecture Grad School Application

Post image
0 Upvotes

HELPPP !!
I’ve tried contacting Carnegie Mellon for the past 2 weeks about their application port and I still haven’t gotten a response. I’ve reached out to both CMU Architecture and General CMU operator and still no luck.

I plan on applying for their MS in Building Performance and Diagnostics but I see that there are no programs available on the SlideRoom application. Anyone experiencing the same thing?

Question about Prospective First Year Arch Portfolios

I'm applying to CMU regular decision, and my portfolio is about halfway done. Before I start with anything else, should Architecture portfolios only have structures and other Architecture related things, or is it ok to have some regular art pieces? So far it's all 3d and 2d models.

I'm also a bit worried looking at some example undergrad application portfolios, because they actually look insane. Is the standard that high?
