[Request] Best gift for my bf that will improve his life
Hey everyone, could you please suggest some gifts for my bf. I have to buy something that doesn’t take a lot of space.
He is in the final months of his phd which has been quite hard. He enjoys playing banjo and working out. He has a lot of great equipment. I usually buy him clothes because he doesn’t really. But I think that’s not the right move anymore. We are long distant rn.
The budget is tight ~$150
Any suggestions would be great!

[Request] Looking for advice: Clothes that look like Ralph Lauren but don't fall apart.
Rant about RL and RLR
I've attached pictures of two of the many items I've purchased from Ralph Lauren lately. The quality deteriorating of these two items have happened after EIGHT HOURS to wear. No wash, no dryer, just a day In college writing tests.
I bought a Lauren Ralph Lauren Stretch Jersey Top for $125 + tax.(Reddish purple item in pictures) as well as a pair of LRL stretch Jersey wide leg pleated pants (the tan item) which I got for 77 dollars on sale but originally retail at around 150 I believe. Without pictures attached I've also purchased a 300 ish dollar cashmere 20/80 cotton blend cardigan from them.
Both LRL items received 8 hours of wear, I didn't do any strenuous activity in them, I purchased them online on the 7th of October 2026. I purchased the Cashmere Cotton Cardigan about a week later also online, it was a gift. The cardigan immediately day one began to pill and the nice cable knit that RL is known for quickly fades on the inner sleeves and sides where friction is most severe. I know that that is to be expected with any cashmere but at this price point with only 20% this seems a bit premature.
The LRL items.. I don't know where to even start 🤢 when I was in my mid teens I had a phase of buying clothes from Shein and this is about what I'd expect from them. I knew both garments were 100% synthetic (recycled polyester) but I assumed that was to be lightweight and to hold a pleat also. Nope. They just cheaped out, because the stitching is flimsy and poor, as are the buttons, and the synthetic fabric itself. I know synthetics can be done right as I live in Florida and understand the need for breathable fabrics, this is not polyester for breathability, this is a mere shortcut.
I was hesitant to buy similar looking items in the 30 - 40 $ price range due to worries about quality but I might have had a BETTER experience there. A similar top I got from Crown and Ivy in the same online order is made a lot better and cost me a tenth of the price.
Actually buy it for life question here
I'm used to buying good work wear and am completely new to buying nice dressy clothes, but the options for women seem pretty mediocre. Even brands like RL often upcharge for women's items or use poorer quality (I. E their iconic cable knit is for some reason more expensive in the women's)
Timeless looking pieces like pleated pants, good quality tops, silks, cottons, cashmeres etc. tend to cater to men or are 600$ and a roulette on quality.
I've been recommended Lilysilk a lot by my Algorithm, are they any good? Any other women here who have figured out how to look like a 90's Wallstreet broken meets real estate lady without fear of your clothes not making it until next week? I'd appreciate brands near or below RL's price points if possible but I know that these days you've gotta pay a premium for a brand that actually does what it says.
Thanks in advance BIFL

Discussion Thank you to the community for their advice. My dryer is fixed.
I was going for an easy cheap fix. But some folks suggested I order the part and replace it myself. Never opened a dryer before but this was really easy.
The first photo is of the final fixed part.
Also I discovered a huge amount of lint that was seeping into the parts from the hole. This would have been a fire hazard.
OG post. In case anyone else wants to do similar repair

Review Norrona jacket peeled off 3 weeks after “repair” and no response to emails or calls - any recs for better quality longer lasting gear?
Paid out of pocket to ship a jacket under warranty for repair of zipper which broke within first 6 months of initial use and peeling logos. Finally received it back and their repress is peeling off after only 3 weeks.
To make matters worse, the brand Norrona boasts high quality gear they charge a pretty penny for and claims they aim for within 24 hour replies, but I emailed them 5 days ago asking for replacement (which their own website promises) and tried calling them multiple times during business hours today and zero response 😭
Man it’s exhausting being a lowly proletariat customer at the mercy of a faceless corporation ugh
Any recs for better quality longer lasting gear? And not just expensive brands that don’t match the quality and prices they advertise, don’t want to get burned again.
EDIT: It’s a women’s falketind thermo60 hooded jacket.
EDIT 2: Whether you’re a pure utilitarian and only care about functionality, or you’re a little vain like me and want branding to stay with regular use esp for a brand charging premiums for their branding not just quality, my main grievances are 1) customer support is non responsive, and 2) if the product branding isn’t designed to stay, then why did support grill me about not washing it more frequently and why does care instructions say to wash it? Either way, it’s either a product quality issue or product design issue. If you have recs or better experience with other brands’ support to share, I’d love to hear about them!

[Request] BIFL Bridesmaids Gift Ideas
I'm looking at purchasing some bridesmaids/maid of honor gifts that won't just be junk sitting in a drawer. The party will be both male/female so I'm trying to find something that would be suitable for both and ideally be something they could actually use. Any ideas?
When i looked things up online it seems most will gift boxes of consumables or trendy items rather than quality>quantity. My ideas so far have been a nice pocket knife maybe? That potentially i could get engraved or something... Or some high quality socks but I feel that may be too lame on my part
EDIT: Thanks for all these great suggestions, I've got so many things i can work with now. Definitely will take note of engraving just the name if I go that route, and will likely buy an engraving pen to make it more personal. But I also like the idea of contributing to the outfit for the day, originally I was just going to tell them to wear what they have because I think it makes the day more genuine, but maybe a tie or accessory would be a cute gift that they could wear on other occasions as well

[Request] Chance to buy something.
Hello BFL community,
My wife is not the best at gift giving but she really wants to buy me something nice for my birthday she has explicitly told me that she has been saving up 1,000 to spend on a birthday gift to me. I’ve told her we can put the money towards something else and I’d be happy with just a dinner at my favorite restaurant (~$50 value). She will not budge she says she’s earmarked this money for a gift to me for a while now but again she’s not the best gift giver. I don’t want to waste this opportunity on something that just costs around that price. I would like to suggest something I can keep, cherish and use for a long time. Please help me.
In terms of interests I like tech but I feel like nothing in tech lasts. I like cooking, I am an average watch enthusiast at best, I like clothes that last specifically winter stuff, I travel often for work, I live in the Midwest, I like video games, anime, food, we have a house so I’m always looking to get home items that won’t break, if there’s some good tools I can use on home maintenance. Personal travel is fun but not something I would consider for this case.
Any suggestions are much appreciated!

[Request] Need women’s wool tshirt
I'm female and I need to upgrade my t shirt game. I'd love some wool (or mostly wool) long sleeve t shirts that I can wear by themselves (not as a base layer). Crappy wool seems to make me pretty itchy. But I've read that good quality merino probably wouldn't. I'd be open to other types of wool like alpaca if it's also not itchy. Needs to be washing machine friendly, but I can hang to dry if necessary. Any suggestions?

Discussion Extend cell phone life as long as possible?
Not even sure if this is the right place to ask this but I didn't see it posted before.
I've had my Samsung Galaxy s23 ultra for about 3 years now and honestly, it does everything I realistically need it to do. Camera still amazes me, battery is fine, I don't have any special use needs for a cell phone, and there's no real reason for me to need "better, faster, .02 mm thinner" or whatever. Just had the screen, front and back glass replaced, got a new case.. it looks and feels like a new phone.
I imagine there's a concern for software updates and all that at some point? Is there any real way to future proof this thing? (as in, it dies of "natural causes" I know the hardware will degrade eventually)

[Request] Looking for winter gloves for snow blowing and shoveling - Is Hestra Wakayama a good choice?
Hey everyone!
I'm looking for a good pair of winter gloves for clearing snow in Quebec, mainly for using a snowblower and occasionally shoveling.
I don't regularly participate in winter sports, so I don't need anything specifically designed for skiing or snowboarding. I just want a durable, warm, and comfortable pair of gloves for everyday winter chores.
A few things I'm looking for:
Leather construction is strongly preferred.
Good warmth for Quebec winters, including temperatures well below freezing.
Durable enough to handle snow blowing and shoveling.
Practical for occasional use rather than high-intensity winter activities.
Ideally, something that looks good too!
I've been looking at the Hestra Wakayama because I really like the design and the leather look.
For those who own them, would you recommend them for this kind of use? Are they warm enough, and do they hold up well when dealing with snow and moisture?
I'm also open to other recommendations if you know of a better option for my needs.
Thanks!

Discussion So is SpaceAid actually decent or just cheap amazon junk?
Every time I search for drawer organizers or shoe racks on Amazon, this SpaceAid brand is always at the top with tons of reviews.
The photos look good, but I’ve had way too many Amazon organisers turn out to be cheap lightweight wood that cracks after a month. Thinking about grabbing a couple pieces, but wanted to check here first to see how their stuff holds up longterm.
Any info on this? Thank you!

[Request] [Request] Office Chair That Is Teenager-Proof
Fairly self-explanatory. I bought a decent office chair that should have lasted him quite a while but he managed to break nearly every part of it. IDK if he's hanging off it like a monkey or what he's doing. Are there any reasonably-priced chairs that are more durable? It doesn't even need to be BIFL - just BIF 5+ years. Looking for something new and under $300, if possible. Price is somewhat flexible I suppose.

[Request] Looking for a heated eye mask that's comfortable and has a decent battery life. thanks for your help!
currently tried this and have enjoyed it for the most part this past year but i'm sure there has to be something a little bit better. mostly in the comfort arena.
I've tried the massager world and it's not for me. I just like a little heat at night. it's extremely relaxing. anyone have a suggestion? better battery life would be a perk too. thank you!!

[Request] BIFL winter jacket for down to -20 celsius
Hi all,
I'm looking for a BIFL winter jacket. I have a 15 year old NorthFace arctic jacket, and while still decent, material is starting to fray.
I'd like something with a very durable shell (probably canvas style), at least water resistent (waxed would be good) and some sort of insulation that won't pile and fail like down eventually will, but still work for down to -20 degrees. I know Filson has some, but I heard mixed reviews about their quality lately, also their true winter jacket is a down filled one.
Any ideas/suggestion?

[Request] Shoes for dog walking
I just started dog walking again and have been getting some pretty gnarly blisters and foot pain. Right now I have Merrell hiking shoes but I’ve worn them down quite a bit. My problem is I’m a really fast walker and tend to wear through soles and heels like nothing. I would love something that’s weatherproof but breathable with good arch support, I like my Merrells but I think they might be what’s causing the foot pain since they’re so worn in. Would love any recommendations, preferably in the $100 range.

Discussion Aran sweaters and shipping to Canada
Was not aware of Aran until someone mentioned the name in another BIFL posting.
As a non-online shopper I added a couple of items to the cart and assumed there would be a shipping charge. That's fair. But then there is the matter of duties and other import fees which I know nothing about. I reached out to Aran and the AI response:
Canada is a non-EU destination, so any applicable taxes, duties, or brokerage fees are not included in the online total; the courier charges the recipient at delivery, with charges assessed by weight and volume. Our store documentation does not specify whether shipping via An Post to Canada or providing a CETA note or other CETA documentation is offered.
If there is anyone here who can advise on the best way to make the buy without doubling the price?

[Request] Any massage chairs that actually work for taller people without eating the whole room?
I'm trying to find a solid massage chair that doesn't end up becoming the biggest thing in the living room. A lot of the normal options I've looked at are basically giant spaceship pods, it's literally one of those bulky, space-hogging eyesores. and I really don't want something that takes over the whole room. Just glancing at it gets on my nerves sometimes.
The bigger problem is that I'm 6'2", so some of the more compact chairs I've tried just don't line up right. The rollers stop around my shoulder blades instead of getting higher, and my legs always end up feeling a little cramped.
After I happened to pop into a Nouhaus showroom once, I've been looking at nouhaus because the chairs seem a bit more like something you could actually leave in a normal living room. I'm mostly comparing the new classic and the campo right now. The campo seems like the better fit for my height and build, but I'm still trying to figure out whether going with the larger chair is worth it for everyday use.
I'm fine spending a bit more, I just don't want to end up with huge chair that gets used for six months and then sits there taking up space.
Anyone around 6'0" to 6'3" using a massage chair regularly? Curious how the fit has been after you've had it for a while.

Discussion BIFL Christmas Gift for a newly wed couple - would you appreciate a handmade marble home decor product?
I'm trying to think of a Christmas gift for a newlywed couple, and I'd love some honest opinions from people who appreciate things that are built to last.
I was thinking about something a little different from the usual kitchen appliances, wine glasses, or gift cards: a few handmade marble pieces for their home, perhaps a serving tray, a jewelry organizer, or a decorative bowl.
The idea is that natural stone has its own character, and unlike trendy decorations that might look dated in a couple of years, a simple marble piece could stay in their home for decades. Plus, every piece has its own veining and patterns, so no two are exactly alike.
Of course, I'm wondering whether this is one of those gifts that sounds thoughtful but ends up sitting on a shelf collecting dust. 😅 Marble is heavy, can chip if handled carelessly, and probably isn't everyone's style.
For those who've owned marble home accessories for years:
- Do they actually hold up well with regular use?
- Would you be happy to receive a handmade marble tray or bowl as a wedding or Christmas gift?
- Which would you choose: something practical, like a serving tray or organizer, or something purely decorative?
- Is natural stone something you'd consider a genuinely long-lasting purchase, or would you rather receive something more functional?
I'd especially appreciate honest opinions from people who've bought or received similar pieces. What would make a gift like this feel special rather than just another decorative object?
Curious to hear your thoughts!
PS: I'm attaching pictures of what I shortlisted so far from a vendor, who isn't expensive and can deliver right before Christmas (flower vase, candle stand, serving plate, jewelry organizer & a mobile holder). I ain't gonna buy all though but all of them look great & durable

Discussion If BIFL should not be taken too literally, could almost any product be ‘BIFL’?
A number of perspectives:
1. “Guaranteed for the expected lifetime of a product” means very little to me.
2. “Guaranteed for the first owner” means a bit more, but is hard to proof, since receipts are required.
3. “Lifetime guarantee” sounds promising, but who’s lifetime?
My point is: originally, BIFL to me meant a product that you would buy once, and that would be useful for the rest of your life. Classical example would be the cast iron skillet or Dutch oven.
But also because of this subreddit, I came to realize that it is more than that. I am looking for examples to inspire myself. Thank you!🙏

[Request] iPhone Screen Protector
I get this isn’t really a FOR LIFE purchase, but for the life of my phone.
I have had a theory that the iPhone keyboard has inexplicably gotten worse. I used to be able to type without looking, and now anything I type is rife with typos. For my whole life, I’ve had a screen protector on my phone. I used to get the expensive ones at AT&T, but in recent years I’ve just bought $6 ones off amazon.
Well, I recently took the screen protector off my iPhone and my quality of life has seriously increased. It’s nowhere near as painful and I can type way faster. It’s also “smoother” when doing “Slide to Type” to type.
Are there any screen protectors out there that better preserve the sensitivity of the iPhone screen?
