Quick Shout out to say Thank You Helpful stranger!
I was at The Goodwill in search of halloween stuff (costumes ideas) for my family. This is a silly thank you, but to whoever the kind and chatty woman was who reminded me that I could try the Bloomington Antique Mall for possible costume items, thank you! Just wanted to pass on the info for anyone who also might have overlooked other halloween options! ha! I just wanted another option beyond the usual or spirit halloween, so I'm passing on the reminder to anyone else who also might have forgotten! There are some really cool things there right now, for what it's worth!

City of Bloomington Water
We moved to the east side of town and installed a whole house filter. I just changed the first sediment filter (there are three filter stages) after six months and this is what it looked like! The new filter is not the left, the old one is on the right. Kind of yuck.

Searching For Master Tutors in the following areas:
Hello! I’m a young man looking for a parental or grandparent-esque figure to teach me a variety of things. In a majority of these areas, I believe an in-person guide would be better rather than Youtube. I have a father and he is lovely but these are not skills he could pass on to me, because he doesn’t know them.
If your father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, brother, friend is:
- cool with black people
- doesn’t mind teaching the basics
- willing to invest time in a rookie
AND has expertise in any of the following areas (with exclamation points next to things that would be super sick to learn):
- duck hunting (!)
- deer hunting
- carpentry/woodworking (!)
- car maintenance (!)
- acrylic/oil painting
- fishing (!)
- banjo
- smoking meats (!)
- backpacking
- furniture making
- over the fire cooking
- literally anything interesting/practical
One person doesn’t need to know it all. I’m willing to learn from multiple sources! Please DM if you have someone who fits the bill, could also be yourself!
I will invest whatever time, materials, and funds your master tutor deems necessary as I understand a lot of these require specialty tools, items, etc.
Thanks in advance!

Fairy ring at IU Hilltop Gardens 🥰
I recently learned about fairy rings! If you don’t know about them they’re mushrooms that grow in a circular pattern.
interesting folklore ✨
Celtic Folklore: In Irish, Welsh, and Scottish traditions, fairy rings were believed to mark places where fairies gathered and danced, sometimes leaving circles of mushrooms or unusually green grass.
English Folklore: Entering a fairy ring was sometimes believed to bring enchantment, trap a person in a supernatural dance, or lead into the fairy realm, where time could pass differently.
German Folklore: Known as Hexenringe (“witches’ rings”), these circles were sometimes believed to mark places where witches danced, particularly on Walpurgis Night. *creepy video about witch hunts When Death Was a Relief
Scandinavian Folklore: Fairy rings were associated with elves dancing at night, leaving circular patterns of flattened or discolored grass, sometimes accompanied by mushrooms.

City of Bloomington Seeks Artists for Signature Gateway Public Artwork
The City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation and the Economic and Sustainable Development departments request qualifications from professional artists or artist teams to create a signature public artwork for the Bicentennial Gateway that celebrates the vibrancy, diversity, resilience, creativity and rich history that make Bloomington unique.
The Bicentennial Gateway has welcomed people to Bloomington since 2024. When the final design for the sign was selected, a portion of the project's Bicentennial Bond funds were earmarked to solicit and install a piece of public art at the site. Now, the City is looking to add public art that goes beyond the city's name to reflect the character, history, and creativity of the community.
“Parks are important gathering places and gateways to our community, and this project is an opportunity to create something that welcomes people to Bloomington in a meaningful and memorable way,” said Tim Street, Director of Bloomington Parks and Recreation. “We want this artwork to reflect the character of our city and give residents and visitors alike a sense of connection and pride in the place we call home.”
There will be multiple opportunities for the community to engage throughout the process and provide feedback. During this initial phase, residents are encouraged to share their perspectives through an online survey.
“The Bicentennial Gateway is an example of what can happen when we listen to our community and remain willing to rethink an approach,” said Mayor Kerry Thomson. “Residents helped shape the direction of the first phase and we’re taking that same approach as we move forward with the public art component.”
The project has a budget of $125,000. Professional artists and artist teams based in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, or Illinois are eligible to apply. Qualifications must be submitted by December 4, 2026. To view the entire call, learn more about the project, and submit an application, visit the City’s Public Art Page.

Scooter losers on Kirkwood
A few nights ago a professor friend and I (we both teach) were at the Doner kebab food truck right on Kirkwood by the Monroe County Library. As we received our take away meals, two young dudes (probably 15-16?) on electric scooters came flying down the sidewalk, right at us, yelling profanities. We moved out of the way just in time,as did a few others in line.
As they zoomed by, we let them know, in no uncertain terms, how obnoxious their behavior was. They then proceeded to circle back, get in our faces, and spewed all sorts of profane insults at us, daring us to "throw down." And for the next ten minutes, as we walked towards the square, they kept circling us, threatening us with violence, as the verbal argument escalated.
We did not take the bait and engage them, although if I was 20 years younger and not holding a position as a professor, I would have floored both of them without hesitation. (Used to live in NYC and nothing is more offensive than riding on the sidewalk).
What is going on with the BPD? My colleague talked to an officer, who said unless they physically attacked us, there was nothing they could do. But this type of behavior is all too common.
Anyway, be on the look out for these creeps. Here's a few pics of the two losers, (one of whom hid his face as he zipped by) who will soon be splattered all over the street due to their reckless and ignorant behavior.
Get a life, kids. And a real two wheeled machine instead of some wimpy ass scooters.

Local pottery I can commission?
I am wanting to commission someone to make some pottery ( just a set of three mugs) for me, I considered attempting to make it myself at the pottery house classes they offer but decided against it as this is for a gift. The project is really simple, just a set of mugs that I can only find being sold as one single mug online.
Backstory for the commission if anyone is interested in the project:
I have always been very close with my aunt and uncle and wold often spend weekends and breaks on their property with them. My uncle has this set of mugs with surprised faces on them and I loved using them as a kind. So, my uncle would ask me if I want a "cup of astonishment." As years have passed, the number of cups of astonishment have dwindled down to one mug that has undergone A handful of repairs and hold a few sharp edges. Though, I just use that old chipped cup to this day and even though my uncle has since passed after a battle with cancer- I still ask for my cup of astonishment.
I would like to find a way to gift my cousin, my auntie, and myself our own cup of astonishment for our shelves and hopefully be able to retire the old chipped one to safety from continued use.
So... Any local pottery artists ? Or should I perhaps try talking to staff themselves at the pottery house studio? I would love to keep it local, a love of Bloomington is also something I got to share with my uncle.

Heard about the College and Walnut Corridor Study and want to know more? In this video, Mayor Kerry shares an important update: while a safer future for these streets is the goal, major changes aren’t on the immediate horizon.
