Discussion Unpacking Anti-Kamala Harris Narratives.

Let's just start with the list first. Then we can discuss.

  1. She had her chance.
  2. She lost the popular vote.
  3. She lost every swing state.
  4. She hasn't been out there speaking out.
  5. She lost because she wouldn't speak out about the Gaza "genocide"
  6. She lost because she wouldn't distance herself from Biden.
  7. Putting her forward would mean having 4 more years of MAGA.

Add your own to the list.

Now let's discuss.

*edit note.

The word genocide is in quotes for the purposes of attribution only. To signal the word that Kamala is accused of refusing to utter.

Not to mock the usage of the word.

Media Recommendation My Thoughts on the Lanterns TV Show as a Black Man

Post image

If the DCU really wanted to do Black characters right, they wouldn’t have introduced Guy Gardner before John Stewart, and they definitely wouldn’t have introduced John Stewart alongside Hal Jordan, making John look like another sidekick to the audience.

The only time John Stewart really works properly is when they basically pretend Hal Jordan doesn’t exist at all, like in the Justice League animated series. John is allowed to simply be Green Lantern without constantly having to exist in relation to Hal.

That audience backlash outcome was completely predictable.

Of course people are going to want more Guy if they already know him and enjoyed him, and of course people are going to gravitate toward Hal when he’s historically been treated as the main Green Lantern. You’ve put John in a position where he has to compete for relevance with two characters who have a stronger claim to the audience’s attention before he’s even had a chance to stand on his own.

And honestly, this is my bigger problem with the way Black characters, especially Black men, are handled in a lot of predominantly white-created fiction. We’re constantly introduced as side characters, successors, replacements, or alternate versions of characters who were already established as white.

Miles Morales is another obvious example. And that stuff never works out well in the long run. There’s always going to be a clash when you introduce a new character whose entire existence is tied to an already-established one. Now you have people saying Miles is invading Peter’s stories, like we’ve seen with the Spider-Man PlayStation games criticism.

This leaves the Black character in a no-win situation. If he remains secondary, the representation feels tokenistic. If he becomes equally prominent, people accuse him of taking the original character's place. If he replaces the original, the character becomes defined by the controversy surrounding the replacement.

What exactly do they expect?

That’s why, personally, I’ve stopped caring about representation. I don’t care about demanding that white people write more Black characters, and I don’t care about being handed another Black character whose primary function is to play second fiddle to somebody else.

Clearly, there’s an issue with depicting Black men in original leading roles where they aren’t filling somebody else’s shoes.

I’d rather they just leave us out of it. I’m personally not interested in being constantly depicted as somebody else’s sidekick, replacement, legacy character, or diversity checkbox.

This isn't even mentioning the fact that they never give Black characters proper movies outside of Black Panther. It's always shows with low budgets or animated movies. The only movie they gave was to Falcon another Black replacement character and they knew that was going to flop.

A lot of my friends are really excited about this new documentary coming out and I can’t understand the hype. I know the story but it doesn’t really move me, a quirky white woman scammed a bunch of people and is now going to prison, big whoop. I’m curious to see if I’m just out the loop or if this is something that (white) people make a big deal out of that most of us couldn’t care less about.

Politics The Black Political Agenda

Our community is global, but this particular agenda focuses on U.S. federal politics.

What else should be added to our list of political demands?

Be specific. Be brief

Keep comments focused on new proposals. No lengthy debates, no derailing, and absolutely no trolling. Trolling will result in a ban.

Discussion Let’s Talk About It

Post image
• Upvotes

Racism has always been present in medicine and healthcare here. It’s well documented that Slaves were experimented on and almost always with no anesthesia. And of course there’s the notorious, Tuskegee Experiment, which did not end until the 70’s!

Recently, my Adult daughter experienced a life threatening medical emergency, and I can confidently say that they almost killed my daughter on two if not three separate occasions.

And I share that to say: ADVOCATE, ADVOCATE, ADVOCATE!

If you don’t fully understand what’s going on, call a friend or family member to come be with you when you talk to the doctors.

Because my daughter was in a teaching hospital which supposedly was #1 in the State, ICU was pretty much ran by Residents/Interns. And they had daily huddles outside of every patient’s room. You have the right to attend those. Ask questions, voice your concerns.

Identify those in your circle that you can call on if you need them, because if you don’t, you may end up burying your loved one. I saw way too many families in the waiting room, confused about what’s going on and they lost their loved ones…

Know your rights as a patient and make sure they don’t violate them.
