Black hair culture…
Yesterday, I was reminded about the beauty of black hair culture.
I 26F invited two friends for a sleepover yesterday. Taylor 26F who is black, and Miya 26F who is Malaysian.
I met Taylor in high school when I was 14 and Miya in undergrad when I was 22. Miya is a third year law student at the school I went to for my masters and Taylor was an incoming first year law student this year. Over the summer, I introduced the two of them and they hit it off and formed their own friendship.
I stayed in the same city after grad school last year and got a really nice apartment downtown. This was my first time hosting so I wanted both of them to come. Miya has been having a rough time; her kitten died at 9 weeks from FIV and her grandma passed three weeks ago. All of this happened during law school finals.
When I asked Miya if she could still make it, she said no. She was really embarrassed because stress and depression lead to her not washing her hair for almost and month. She said her hair was matted and dirty and she had a flight to catch to Malaysia in 3 days and she was overwhelmed with the idea of washing and detangling.
In the group chat, Taylor and I told her to still come to the sleepover and that we’d wash and detangle her hair. She said no a few times and we eventually convinced her.
We did a pre pop and started on the detangle process. Washed her hair over the kitchen sink. I had a hair mask, olaplex and a sit under dryer for deep conditioning. We blow dried her hair (type 2 but THICK and wavy) with my pattern blow dryer. Taylor trimmed her ends.
Almost 2/3rds of the way through, Miya broke down crying. Like sobbing at the fact that we would do this for her. She likened it to a salon treatment and said she didn’t deserve this and had ‘dreamt of friends like this’. She was also sooooo grateful that we didn’t ’judge her about her hair being dirty’.
We told her that this was normal for us! Washing hair, detangling while watching movies. Having friends braid each others hair while hanging out when we were younger. We reminisced about the time Taylor helped me detangle 3 months worth of old box braids with caked on gel and lint.
This experience reminded me of the beauty of black hair culture. Seeing the acts of care, bonding and sister hood from an outside perspective rewired my brain and filled me with a deep sense of pride and warmness :)

PLEASE HELP!!!
I’ve been trying to keep my hair good and healthy so i’ve started doing twist outs and washing weekly. (it’s only been a week since i’ve so 😭). i was looking at the back of my hair through a camera and i was shocked. the top of my hair looks shorter than the back. I think i might have different curl patterns on the top and bottom of my hair but im not sure. when i take a part of my top and the back they match up. i dont have ponytail damage i dont think because when i do them i dont slick them back or tie them more than twice and they’re never tight. could this be two different curls patterns.(also my hair isnt dry she’s very moisturized, ive just been sweating) but anyways the first picture is a part from the back and top matching up

Advice Needed What Kind of Hair for This as a Sew In?
I’m aware that this is a synthetic wig but I’d rather get a human sew in so I can leave it for a while and be able to wash my hair. Going to a human hair vendor tomorrow since the hairstylist I booked said the hair supply hair isn’t to be trusted lol. She also said this texture would be loose wave. I’ve never done sew ins or weaves before, but looking at the hair, that curl seems too loose and deep wave curls seem too small. Is

Advice Needed Hair question
Every time I try to do my hair it clumps together rather than forming curls. It does curl a little bit but how do I get more defined curls? My parents always made me keep my hair short until I went to college so I’m just looking for any advice cause I’m kinda lost.

Advice Needed My 4B/4C roommate was hospitalized - Looking for Shampoo/Conditioner recommendations for extremely simple wash & go. (No family support & I have 1A hair). Any advice appreciated!
So some background context - I've known her since about june this year, she moved in with me a few weeks ago after confiding that she's been dealing with homelessness. A few days ago she had a psychiatric emergency and had to be hospitalized. She's no contact with her family because of abuse, and she recently moved to our city to be away from them, so she doesn't have many other relationships here yet. Me and my bf are her support system right now.
The issue here is that because of her homelessness, she really only had soap and body wash at the apartment, because of her mental state she's been unable to feed/clothe herself the past few days (let alone track down my phone number to call me and ask for what she needs), and because I'm not her next of kin that's the only way I'd be allowed to be in contact with her while she's in the hospital.
I've made sure she was able to get her other belongings - I brought her pillow, blanket, and several sets of clothes (for cold temps, warm temps, daytime, and sleep), books, etc.
I have no idea what to bring for her hair, and I'm honestly overwhelmed trying to tackle all the administrative stuff I've been having to navigate to try and get her the care she deserves.
I want her to have a minimal step routine that she'll be able to manage once she's in a little better state of mind. I'm looking for a shampoo and conditioner, possibly a leave in conditioner/styling product as well that will keep her hair healthy and nourish it, and I'm completely out of my depth with all the information I'm looking at right now online.
I don't think the hospital will let her have a wide tooth comb (or possibly any comb) because of the possibility of hurting herself with it right now, and I know they won't let her have hairbands or wraps, so if there's any alternative suggestions for that as well I'd really appreciate it. They did let her have her bonnet.
Thank you so much if you've taken the time to read this, and especially if you've responded. We can use all the help we can get right now 🙏❤️

How often do you wash your hair?
I am a flexibility and also dance instructor. I workout for about 3-4 hours everyday because of my job. I hate the way my hair feels when I sweat so much. The texture and also the feeling is just so gross to me. Because of this, it makes me want to wash my hair everyday but I know that that’s bad.
How often do you all wash your hair?

Advice Needed Chronically Ill Black Women... what are we doing with our hair?
The title basically explains my ordeal. I have hEDS (dx) + some mobility issues due to it and possibly thoracic outlet syndrome which I will be getting assessed by a PT soon (..again).. but I am looking for hairstyles to have when it flares up, I also might have to get an x-ray for my hand joints because they'll freeze up, and I frequently have to ask my family if they can help out.
Here's the main issue. I'm mixed, (tejana mom and black father) with really thick, fine hair (3a-3c strands). That ontop of my collagen being messed up, it's really hard for me to find something that works for me. I currently just wash as needed and keep it in it's natural state but.. it's pretty taxing.
Any advice is apprecited! Even if you aren't in my exact predicament.. I would love to hear 🪷🩷

Aphogee Changed Formula
Used some Aphogee products recently and all of the newly purchased ones I have tried left my hair feeling dry. (Apart from the protein treatment). I emailed the company suspecting they were counterfeit products, as I have seen a few posts on social media saying Pak Cosmetics sells fake products.
The image is Aphogee’s response to my email which I’ve pasted below.
I would like to know:
if anybody else who uses Aphogee products has also experienced the same thing?
Recommendations for other products I should try.
I tried Shea Moisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Conditioner when I couldn’t get my hands on Aphogee Curlific Texture Treatment and I wasn’t a fan.
I am UK based so any products available in Boots & Superdrug are also an option outside of the obvious ones you can get in hair shops.
EMAIL TO APHOGEE BELOW ⬇️
Hi team,
I’m a UK based customer and I have been using your products consistently for around 11 years. My mum also used your products on my hair as a child so I’m a big fan and very familiar with the company.
I live rurally and don’t have any shops that stock your products locally (or any other afro-friendly products). For this reason, I tend to buy products online in bulk once or twice a year.
In April I purchased a large order of Aphogee products from a vendor called Pak Cosmetics. Back in April I opened the newly purchased bottle of ProVitamin Leave in and it didn’t smell familiar and left my hair incredibly dry - I assumed I got a bad batch. I kept the bottle because it had a little bit left in it and I usually decant it into a spray bottle.
The next month I opened a new tub of the Curlific Texture Treatment, it had a somewhat similar scent but didn’t feel quite right. Again, my hair didn’t feel the same after using it but it wasn’t as bad as the previous leave in. I just assumed you’d changed the formula and carried on using it so as not to waste yet another product.
Tonight I went to wash my hair using the remainder of a bottle of Deep Moisture Shampoo purchased from a different online vendor. This bottle has familiar packaging and the scent, texture, consistency and effect I have come to expect. The bottle ran out midway through so I picked up a new bottle I had purchased from Pak Cosmetics back in April, to continue washing my hair.
This bottle was a lot firmer (when squeezing) in comparison to my previous bottle. The scent was completely different and the actual shampoo was a lot thinner consistency in comparison to the previous bottle. When I inspected the old bottle vs the new bottle I also noticed differences with the print on the packaging.
Additionally, I have just checked the unopened tub of Curlific Texture Treatment and it did not have the protective internal lid that it usually has. The newly opened Deep Moisture & unused Curlific Shampoo smell almost identical.
Below is a list of products I bought from Pak Cosmetics back in April:
- ProVitamin Leave In Conditioner x2
- Deep Moisture Shampoo x1
- Curlific Textured Hair Wash x1
- Curlific Texture Treatment x1
- Two Step Protein Treatment x1
I was wondering if you could please confirm the following about the above products:
- have there been any formula changes to any of the above products, if so when?
- have there been any changes to the manufacturer of the above products, if so when?
- have there been any changes to packaging on the above products, if so when?
- is there anything else I should know about these products that may account for the inconsistencies I experienced?
I suspect these products are counterfeits so I have taken photos, including of barcodes/identification codes etc. I have also taken kept all of the bottles so I am happy to take more photos and videos if you need them.
I was wondering if I sent these photos through to you, is there any way you can check these in your records to see if they register as legitimate?
I know this most likely isn’t your fault (so I apologise for the nauseatingly long email) but I’m quite upset about this as I spent a lot of money on these products. I know if I go to the vendor and accuse them of being counterfeit with no evidence (and ask for a refund) they will deny it and be of no help. I thought it would be best to get in touch with you for assistance first.
Warmest regards,
*My name*

Product Review Hawaiian Silky Do It Anyway
So, I thought I wasnt gonna do it again. I cut my hair. Not bald this time because It can be exhausting dealing with long full hair and I wanted to try something different by defining my curls since thats been a big goal of mine.
I was on the search for curl activators because my mom told me you can use em without texturizers. While I was going through failed after failed results with various of old and new products, I stumbled upon Hawaiian silky from a previous line I tried(14 in 1 to be exact)and discovered not only they have curl activators, a cream verison is out there without the greasy feel to it like the pink and clear gel. If you are a OLD SCHOOL hair product user, you may know about Hawaiian Silky with their white cream and green color line. I learned about it through my bonus mom who worked at the hair supply store for many years....
In the pics with the two products, I used these bottles including a big plastic hair pic first to detangle and moisturize my hair. Bow Wow Twist King Sponge for long hair is what I like best over the curl sponge glove. I used the big gold one. I found with curl sponges, it leaves little black sponge material and dries out my hair.
it givea similar results when I use just my hands.
I was completely surprised this worked for my hair after less than six months of searching but theres only so many curl activators LOL. I went to work one day with one of my wigs on and the other day with my new natural hair look. A lot of my female coworkers liked my new look and said I never needed the wig. :) It made me feel better because not a lot of black women compliment on my natural hair. my mom wasnt into natural hair when I was growing up so this made me feel proud I could achieve this on my own without her doing it my hair.
As for my own opinion about my hair, I'm probably not going back to wigs for the long term and may just color it next lol. I feel relieved now, seeing my hair to say the least.
