Hey Guys, a short info for this sub to make things a lot easier for me. If some reconize a Swift in this sub that needs help, please contact me or give the person that found the bird my name. I'm a professional caretaker for swifts with the extra ability to help people that have no help nearby. I'm able to contact people that are in no phone book or seek veterinary in other countries that are specialized in swifts. And an extra note, if you also wanna help the birds or the people...the clinic in Frankfurt only functions through donations. And they have a lot to do this year.

Just got my first tornado watch of the summer, so I checked my emergency it, and realized it’s a good time to share info with y’all! My emergency kit includes…
* hard plastic carrier, labeled with my contact info – I also have a soft-sided backpack carrier, but I want hard sided for emergencies so she’s less likely to get crushed if something falls on her. Hard carrier has one perch, and normally I’d add a toy and news print on the bottom, but I just washed it.
* hard plastic tub to carry the rest of the stuff, also labeled with contact info, including her vet’s info and a description of her
Inside the tub are the following (generally in small ziplock bags):
* a reminder to add nonperishable food (pellets) and water
* contact info for me and my vet
* records that prove ownership, including purchase receipt and a few vet records
* nail clippers / dremel
* styptic powder, gel, or stick
* corn starch or flour in a ziplock bag
* q-tips
* cotton pads for makeup (I should probably add or swap with some gauze)
* baby shampoo
* scissors
* vet wrap / coban
* pliers
* a pillowcase (for emergency stuffing her into)
* individually packaged alcohol wipes
* a couple spare harnesses that she isn’t trained on, but just in case
The tub lives under her cage always, so it’s handy if ever needed. Her soft-sided carrier also lives under the cage. The hard-sided carrier lives in a closet, so since there’s a tornado watch (lower level of threat) I took it out and cleaned it up in case that escalates. And the tub and carrier are both near the exit and her cage should we need to go for the basement.
Pictures are of the emergency kit ready to go, and of Kappa herself (female dusky conure, 19YO) from last week.
Here’s a few resources for making your own kit:
https://www.cdc.gov/healthy-pets/emergency-preparedness/preparedness-kit.html

https://www.avma.org/sites/default/files/2023-11/aph-pet-evacuation-kit-checklist.pdf
Questions for y’all: do you have your own emergency kit? Are there different things in it, based on your bird’s needs or your local threats? Anything you think I missed or is overkill?

Hey so this morning I noticed my cockatiel's big poop while cleaning its cage and it looks very concerning. He's done it again the second time. He's been acting normal and eating and drinking fine. I wanna know is this due to something?

So... this question may sound weird because I found absolutely nothing on the internet to back her up and wanted to ask around more knowledgeable people:
So, I'm having to take care of my mother's two pet budgies because she got two new cats that she can't control. She... is quite paranoid and I don't want to turn this into a rant about my mother, but she told me to not give them any toys, mirrors or swings because they are old and she fears they are only going to hurt themselves. I feel bad for them because they only sit around at the same spot, occasionally singing, but for the most part are bored as hell even after I bought them a bigger cage. Me interacting with them is also not helpful because they are absolutely terrified of humans.
Now I just mentioned to her that I bought them millet at the pet store as a treat, but she immediately screamed at me that I'm killing them because millet will infect them with mites, the vet had warned her to never ever under any circumstances give it to them because of that and that I'm beyond stupid not to know something that is so common knowledge.
I was baffled, thinking if millet is such an instant death sentence, it wouldn't get sold in the pet store... in any case, I hadn't even gotten to giving it to them, so I now threw it out into the garden for wild birds to have fun with it, but my mother's reaction is still vexing me, particularly now that a Google sweep failed to bring up any concern in that regard. What was that vet telling her?
Related to that... any treat I could give to the budgies that may not make my mother go ballistic? I'm already giving them cucumber, apple and sometimes egg whites. Also the girl of them has lots of bald spots (and has so for years), and I wonder whether that's a diet issue.

Hey guys, i’ve had Broski for about 2-3 months and he’s been doing this constant tail movement ever since. should i be concerned? I learned (months before getting him) that tail bobbing can be a sign of sickness.
He has also been making these little sneeze sounds that sometimes come with discharge, but the thing is, he’s also been doing that ever since i got him
I took him to the vet last month and here is what the paperwork says: “Broski is here for his first checkup. He is a bruiser weighing in at 32g. he is active and alert. The gram stains showed some abnormal bacteria so he will need some antibiotics. the fecal was normal.”
He’s been prescribed Clavamox drops and Fauna Flora (Avizyme), which he managed to finish.

Here is one more reason to hate the way of celebration of these festivals, this pegion is sitting on my neighbours window from past few hours, firstly I thought it was just its natural colour or sometimes idiots around my place colour them for fun, but today at evening I saw it carefully and then I saw it was a burn around his neck very lethal burn I think happened with some crackers or something I don’t know, but it made me really angry and sad at same time because I can’t do anything to save him currently. I try to contact my neighbours but they haven’t replied me, but it’s out of my reach. My picture is taken from very far. Is there any suggestions from anybody? What can I do to save him and if I make him fly anyway, will he survive please suggest something and please do not use fire crackers. It is harmful in every possible way, not a single thing that you can say in favour of these crackers.

Today I rescued a (not mine) parrot (not sure if it’s a parrot but definitely not a love bird) with clipped wings from a stray cat in my backyard. I was wondering if I did the right steps by cleaning the wounds with water and betadine????? There aren’t any open vet clinics close to me and the avian vets are also extremely far from my location. I really want this parrot to survive 😭😭.

Is this normal budgie behavior?
Edit: I think it might be stargazing

My White-Bellied Caique is suddenly very sick. Has anyone experienced this? I’m terrified of losing her.
I’m posting here because I’m desperate to hear from anyone who has experienced something similar with their parrot.
I have a female White-Bellied Caique named Coco. She’s normally very active, playful, and full of personality. But over the past couple of days, her behavior has completely changed.
Here’s the timeline of what’s happened:
About 2 days ago: I started noticing Coco wasn’t acting like herself. Her personality completely changed. She’s become very quiet, weak, and sleepy. She isn’t nearly as active as she normally is. She still eats here and there and drinks water, but nowhere near how she normally behaves.
Sometimes she sleeps with her eyes partially open, and she’s just not herself at all. It’s heartbreaking to watch because I know something is seriously wrong.
October 20 – Vet visit:
I took her to the veterinarian because I knew I couldn’t wait any longer.
The vet noticed her droppings were discolored and collected a stool sample to check for an infection. They didn’t find anything that explained her condition.
They also performed an X-ray, which didn’t show anything abnormal.
The vet prescribed two medications:
Enrofloxacin (Baytril) – An antibiotic for bacterial infections.
Metronidazole (Flagyl) – Used for certain bacterial and protozoal infections.
October 20, around 5 PM: I gave Coco her first dose of both medications.
About 8 hours after the first dose: I’m still extremely worried. She’s very weak, and I’m desperately hoping these medications start helping her.
What I’m doing at home:
I’ve separated her from my other parrot, a male Caique we brought home a few months ago. He’s completely healthy and showing no symptoms.
I’ve also made sure Coco’s cage is warm and that she’s comfortable. I’m monitoring her closely.
Because she isn’t eating enough on her own, I’ve also been giving her hand-feeding formula with a syringe, following the veterinarian’s instructions. I’m trying everything I can to keep her nourished and hydrated while the medications hopefully start working.
I called about getting additional testing done, but I was told to give the antibiotics some time to work. I was also told some blood test results could take around three days.
My questions for other parrot owners:
Has anyone experienced a Caique or another parrot suddenly becoming extremely weak and changing behavior like this?
Has anyone used Enrofloxacin and Metronidazole together? How long did it take before you noticed improvement?
Could this still be an infection even though the initial stool testing and X-ray didn’t show anything?
Has anyone had a bird recover from being this weak?
Are there other tests I should be asking my veterinarian about?
Could my other parrot have introduced something even though he’s completely healthy?
I’m honestly terrified. I love this bird so much, and watching her like this is absolutely heartbreaking.
I’m not expecting Reddit to replace a veterinarian. I’ve already taken her in, and I’m following the prescribed treatment. I’m just hoping someone who’s been through something similar can share their experience, especially how long it took their bird to respond to treatment.
Please, if anyone has experienced anything like this, I’d really appreciate hearing your story. I just want my little girl to survive.

He hasn’t made this clicking noise before. For context he’s 10 years old and he’s very active.

Hey guys,
We got four budgies exactly 2 weeks ago from a friend who is unable to care for them anymore.
This particular one cannot fly as apparently someone has clipped his wings too far and hurt him enough that they don’t regrow so because of this he is naturally very scared and anxious. The other budgies have settled into the new space and sing, fly, etc. happily but he stays mainly in the cage and just observes his surroundings.
Saying that, is this shaking normal? Is he just not yet comfortable with us and the space? He doesn’t sit on the floor of the cage, doesn’t breathe with his mouth open and doesn’t have his feathers fluffed.

i've had both of them since they were a baby, i used to hand feed them and the first one used to eat a lot (this was way back january when i got them) but one day refused hand feeding and switched to seeds. both of their diet are veggie chop and seed with occasional pasta/rice/bread treats. the second bird eats a lot, she would basically eat anything. i wish the first bird eats too so he would put on more weight (fyi, he always looks like that so i don't know if he's sick or just malnourished) but ive had them for 9 months now and i don't see any problem with them. what should i do ? any advices ? i cant take them to vet yet bcs most vets in my area only accepts cat and dogs and i have yet to find one that treats birds T__T

Hello all, I came home from work today and my Screamers face and crest feathers were all sticky and she had this sticky thing stuck on her back. I figured maybe she threw up but there was also one poop on the cage floor that was especially darker than normal which I photographed too.
However, she was totally normal and wanted to be let out like normal. She flew as always, ate some food, and has been preening on me since. I sprayed her with a warm mist to help her poor face feathers.
I booked an appointment for ASAP with her avian vet. But does anyone have any guesses or info based on the symptoms and her behavior now??
Thank you!!
