Estimating is not encouraged here, this subreddit is for sharing knowledge in the Autobody industry.

Estimating needs to be done at an autobody shop or with an insurance agent using the latest software. Any advice given in the subreddit pertaining to costs for repair will not be accurate and could be misleading.

  1. If your car is undriveable do not ask for advice on how to quick fix it.
  2. If your repair is going to be shoddy, half assed or of very low standard it will be deleted.
  3. A quality autobody shop is where your modern car should be fixed, it can be dangerous for yourself and others if improperly repaired by not following procedures.
  4. Advice on what happens during your repair is encouraged. Ex, "How is my quarter panel welded on" or "How much filler should be put on a dent".
  5. Techs. Talk more about yourselves, your processes, shops and things that keep you going in the trade. Share your day and what you have learned. We all work at different levels and learn so much from working together.

HELP! I have a question. I accidentally took off a section of clear coat on my hood

Post image

Hi everyone. I was being an idiot and hit my hood with a high pressure water sprayer. It ended up taking off a section of the clear coat. Would buying a spray can of clear coat be able to repair this? The paint seems fine, so I want to try fix it before it becomes an issue. Thank you for any help you’re able to offer.

Question about the Trade CCC sells to Private Equity Firm

Anyone else think this may be a death nail in the industry for independent shops? Insurers are going to ask for larger discounts on the contracts, forcing MSOs to absorb the cost disparity. PE will then offset the difference by charging independents more. Then independents need to decide if they want to switch to Mitchell, Audatex, or Webest and dealing with the discrepancies. Ultimate hurting the techs and independent owners. MSOs (mostly owned by PE firms) then come in and scoop up the independents for cheap.

Or maybe I'm just all doom and gloom. I've just never seen PE take over something and have it turn out well.

My 6th gen Celica. Has some rear quarter damage. Curious to see how you all would attack a job like this. Love old Celicas, especially in this paint code. Got the car for basically nothing so dont mind just leaving it be. At the very least seeing if these dents can be pulled. Thanks for your time.

Touched a pole the other day on the rear passenger door of a 2022 F150. How hard is it to pull the larger dent out. It doesn’t have to be perfect. I’m not in the body work trade, but can sometimes be handy. Or is this gonna have to be a professional job. Thanks all.

Is there a process to repair this? college student paying out-of-pocket: do i really need a new headlight for this parking garage scrape?

so i am a college student paying entirely out-of-pocket for what i did to my poor car. the couple quotes i've gotten from autobdy shops have been between 3k-4k which is beyond what is an option for me right now. a lot of that cost comes from a new headlight, which i don't totally understand the need for as the headlight operates fine and feels securely in place. other than the dent, the only damage is a squeaking sound my driver door makes when opened...i just want the car to look decent and be safe to drive! is there some way i can just push the dent out myself and just get the paint repaired? any reccomendations/advice would be very much appreciated!

HELP! I have a question. chalkboard paint

• Upvotes

Hi everyone, hoping someone might be able to give me some advice.

I'm planning to start a food van business called The Chalkboard, and one of the ideas is to have the outside painted matt black so customers can draw on it using traditional coloured chalk in exchange for a £1 donation to charity.

I've seen a few people paint their cars with chalkboard paint, and I've spoken to someone who used matt-black spray paint on his car and just resprayed bits when they got worn or damaged.

I've been struggling to find a paint that's actually suitable for a vehicle, so I'm wondering whether ordinary matt-black automotive paint might work instead.

Ideally, I'd want something that people can draw on with chalk, wipe clean without leaving loads of marks, and that can cope with rain and being cleaned regularly. I don't mind having to touch up the odd bit now and again, as long as it doesn't need doing all the time.

Has anyone tried anything like this before, or know of a paint that might work? I'd really appreciate any advice, especially from anyone who's actually tried it.

Thanks! 🙂

HELP! I have a question. I’m considering being a body tech

• Upvotes

How is it to actually be a body tech, any tips going into the industry? (yes i have general automotive repair experience)
I understand the general concept of the job but i’m curious if it’s extremely laborious and tiring, how complex it is for let’s say frame and panel repair and maybe a little painting as well.

Minor fender bender from backing up. Two cracks in the bumper on the rear. One auto body shop said only new bumper. Other guy I went to said could plastic weld it. Is this fixable without a whole new bumper?

HELP! I have a question. Car Repair Debacle

Post image

First, I am aware of rule one and am not in search of an estxmate. After research I feel like it's common knowledge it does not cost 4K to repair a 2011 car. Read further below:

Last night I was struck by a 2011 Toyota Prius while on a lime scooter. In the moment I was shaken up, had a dead phone, and didn't know much about cars. The man seemed respectful at first, but then a bunch of red flags kept popping up.

First, he demanded that I send him money in the moment for the repairs, claiming his friend quoted him over the phone for a cost estxmate of $4000 to replace a windshield, front bumper (which looks like it has previously been damaged as I see tape on it), and the left light housing. I find these prices ridiculous, but as stated earlier I had no phone to do research and have little knowledge about cars.

He then said the tow would cost $500-600 dollars, and that I would need to pay for that too. Later in the night he asks me to send it, but he refuses to give a company name, reciept, invoice, or anything, stating again that it was "his friend" and a cash only, "emergency tow service". I confronted him about this and needing an invoice, and he settled that I only cover 300 of it.

I'm really unsure what to do in this situation, and would love to hear from someone who knows about cars. I am 90% sure my number is blocked by the Prius driver after settling, so I am unsure of what to do. While he was trying to keep insurance out of the mix, I have his full legal name, address, VIN, and insurance number that I can use.

I am not looking for a repair estxmate, just advice of what to do in this situation. His whole goal was to keep his insurance out of the mix, but I am considering giving them a ring as I have no way to get through to him and do not trust his pricing. Thanks!

Acceptable quality? Color Match

edit: thanks everyone for your responses, this was very helpful! I’m just sticking with it and won’t have it redone. I’m just not very experienced with repairs and wanted to get a few opinions from all you pros out there as far as what should be expected. Also the car is old but it only has 75k miles and is in pretty good condition, I plan on driving it for a while.

I had been rear ended recently and needed to have my rear bumper replaced. I picked it up at the shop today but felt like the color was off slightly compared to the original. The guy at the shop said that bumpers never match as the body is metal and bumpers are plastic. He offered to repaint it if I still found it unacceptable after taking it home over the weekend and looking at it for a while.

Am I tripping or is this within an acceptable limit? The car is a 2013 so is it just that the original paint is faded? Also on the last pic there’s a little scuff or patch of dull paint, does this also seem reasonable? I would hate to ask to have it redone if this is up to standard. For added context, I picked the car up and took these pictures late in the afternoon, the light is a little bit low. Thanks in advance

Is there a process to repair this? Bowed Tailgate

Picked up a tailgate to replace my rusted out one on my ‘85 4Runner. When I put it on, there is a bow near the bottom causing a big gap where the tailgate/weatherstrip should butt up against the body.

Can anyone explain how I should go about straightening this out? Appreciate any advice!

HELP! I have a question. Help me decide please

I bought a 2026 Toyota Raize 6-7 months ago. Two days ago, a motorcycle accidentally hit my passenger door and dented it (see pictures). I went to a Toyota body repair shop, and they told me the door needs replacement and that it would cost $1,200 to repair the door and a couple of small, random dents on the bumper. I then went to a few random auto body repair shops and got quotes of $200–$300, but they said they'd use hammering and putty to repair it and that it would look brand new. Everything else in the door works except the window doesn't go down fully. Do you think I should go for the company replacement door option or just a random auto body repair shop? Thanks!

Is there a process to repair this? Car was scratched in a parking lot…how do I fix this without going to a shop :(

I’m a broke college student and just bought my car. The next day I parked at the school lot, went to class, came back with it having this mark. I’m not really wanting to spend a ton on getting this repaired if I can fix it on my own! Any tips = amazing tip!!! Should I wipe it up and see what the aftermath is? I saw there were some paint pens, maybe that can help?
