Book Discussion Who decides what counts as unabridged?
In particular Full Cast editions?
I can understand removing dialogue tags, and even dialogue descriptors. Famously in the new Harry Potter recordings: 'Dumbledore asked calmly' is famously removed due to how polarised that line has become.
Yet things have been changed from the original text in that series' recording.
Order of The Phoenix, end of chapter 16: Dark is changed to Dark-haired (this was originally brought up by me in Harry Potter subs but they were removed and I was banned from one. And at the risk of me being banned from here as well, I will just leave this vague I suppose and get a discussion in the comments going on exactly WHY that line was changed to dark-haired.
The erasure of certain undertones from classic books is dangerous imo. Harry Potter is counted as a classic now, and changing a character's description from dark to dark-haired, after another character says they didn't like them, changes more than just the wording and feel of a scene.
The original text and the US text describes the character physically as dark. A number of translations (German, Mandarin and others) say dark-skinned.
As far as I can tell, the only editions that call the character dark-haired is the new Audible recordings.
I would be interested in getting into a discussion about where the line is with audiobooks on unabridged, who makes that decision, and more importantly, how and why the source material is changed.
There are many more altercations including...
Deathly Hallows, The Epilogue is counted as Chapter 37, but nothing else I could find
