Hey everyone! I moved to the Stafford/Sugar Land area about 4–5 months ago and this community genuinely helped me with my apartment, utilities and settling in. Thank you for that! Now I need your help with the next big thing - buying my first used car in Houston.
What I’m looking for:
- Budget: $8k–$15k (can stretch to $16k for a great deal)
- 2019 or newer
- Ideally under 60–70k miles
- Clean title + zero accidents
- Good MPG
- Most importantly: reliable. Normal ~$500–600/year maintenance is fine; I just don't want frequent or expensive repairs.
Currently considering Elantra, Forte, Sentra and Jetta. I especially like the Jetta, but the maintenance/reliability opinions seem very mixed.
A few questions for Houston car owners:
- Where should I actually search — dealerships, CarGurus, Cars.com, AutoTrader, CarMax, Marketplace/private sellers?
- Any trustworthy (or avoid-at-all-costs) dealers around Stafford/Sugar Land/Houston?
- What should I check on CARFAX/AutoCheck, especially for Houston flood cars?
- Should I always get an independent pre-purchase inspection (PPI)?
- Any specific cars/years you would recommend or avoid in this budget?
If you recently bought something around $10k–$16k, I’d love to know what car, year/mileage, price and where you bought it.
Thanks again — you guys helped me with the move, hopefully you can help me avoid buying a money pit too 😅
