Discussion Has anyone successfully made extra income doing freelance engineering work while working full-time?
I’m an Electrical and Computer Engineer with over 10 years of experience, currently working full-time in systems integration and testing. My background includes LabVIEW, TestStand, automated test systems, hardware troubleshooting, instrument integration, and test development.
I’ve been thinking about using my engineering skills to generate additional income outside my regular job, possibly by offering freelance services to small manufacturers, electronics companies, or businesses that need help with test automation.
I’m not necessarily looking to start a large consulting company. Ideally, I’d like to take on smaller projects during evenings or weekends and potentially make an extra $1,000–$3,000 per month.
For those who have actually done something similar:
How did you land your first paying client?
Where do you find customers who need these services?
What type of engineering work has been the most profitable?
How much do you typically charge per hour or project?
Is there enough demand for part-time freelance engineering work?
What challenges did you face balancing freelance projects with a full-time engineering job?
I’m also curious whether platforms like Upwork are worth exploring or if directly approaching local manufacturers is a better strategy.
I’m aware of potential conflicts of interest and employer policies, so I’d be keeping everything completely separate from my full-time job.
I’d especially appreciate hearing from engineers who started with zero clients and managed to turn this into a consistent side income.
Thanks in advance!
