PSA Worst experience I've ever had with a credit card. Thanks Goldman Sachs
Walked into the Apple store in Paris today to purchase an iPad pro (currently traveling). Card declined 3x using Apple pay. Not unusual when traveling, but never received a verification text...
Call up the support line. Provide all info to them, answer all their questions. "Card is good to go, you can make your purchase now." Hang up. Card declined again. Try again after a few minutes, declined again.
Call back, spend 29 minutes on the phone. They tell me there is now a new restriction on my account that was just added because of "too many declined transactions". Ask them how they can remove it, they say they can't, it's an automated system. Speak to supervisor, he says it's impossible to remove and I can't use my card today. Tells me I will receive a call back later.
Zero history of fraud. Perfect credit score/payment history. $100k+ in personal credit. Purchase is a small amount ($1500). Had my card since 2022, rarely use it except in an Apple store since I have better cards in every category, but I still charge a few transactions to it here and there - currently has a $360 balance for reference.
They confirmed on the phone that your card can be locked for security reasons at any time, and that there is no possible way to unlock it by providing more information/verification, despite having zero history of unusual or fraudulent activity, and that you may simply be unable to use your card for an entire day as a result.
Never had such a strange experience before with a credit card. I wish there was more to this story, but just PSA to be aware. I ended up using a different card in the store and I wish I didn't waste so much time but at a certain point it became about the principal.
