Hello r/ANU!
As you may have noticed the Sub was looking a little dead recently with little visible moderation and no custom design. Not so much anymore!
The ANU subreddit has been given a coat of paint and a few new pictures, as well as a new mod! Me!
However, we can't have a successful community without moderators. If you want to moderate this subreddit please message the subreddit or me with a quick bio about you (year of study, what degree, etc) and why you would like to be mod.
Also feel free to message me or the subreddit with any improvements or any icons that you think would be nice.
Otherwise get your friends involved on here, or if you have Discord join the unofficial ANU Students Discord too: https://discord.gg/GwtFCap

A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users.
On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader to Sync.
Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface .
This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.
On June 12th, many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy. Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn't something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love.
The two-day blackout isn't the goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action.
If you wish to still talk about ANU please come join us on the Discord (https://discord.gg/GwtFCap).
Us moderators all use third party reddit apps, removing access will harm our ability to moderate this community, even if you don't see it there are actions taken every week to remove bots and clean up posts.
Complain. Message the mods of /r/reddit.com, who are the admins of the site: message /u/reddit: submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on /r/reddit, such as this one, leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app- and sign your username in support to this post.
Spread the word. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join us at our sister sub at /r/ModCoord - but please don't pester mods you don't know by simply spamming their modmail.
Boycott and spread the word...to Reddit's competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 13th- instead, take to your favorite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support!
Don't be a jerk. As upsetting this may be, threats, profanity and vandalism will be worse than useless in getting people on our side. Please make every effort to be as restrained, polite, reasonable and law-abiding as possible.

What option does one tick to be considered for the RTP scholarship in the PhD application. It is not listed there, so am lead to believe it tick self-funded. However that also seems wrong.

Hey, I am probably going to be starting an undergrad at ANU next year. I will be moving from Melbourne and I have got an offer from Wright as part of the early entry thing. I was just wondering what the vibe is around Wright. Like is there a good social scene and stuff even in broader Canberra how's the social life because my biggest worry leaving Melb is that I would get bored in Canberra.
Thanks so much for the help!!

Hi all,
I'm looking to attend ANU next year, but I'd be likely living off-campus with family. Has anyone got experience with this type of situation? Are you isolated from making friends with other students?
Also, will living off-campus mean that I'm outside the social 'scene' of Canberra? I know there is a common-room for students who don't live on campus, but is this an active community comparative to the existing residences?
Thanks in advance!

i saw someone say you might as well just do MBA in ANU. but i dont qualify for MBA but i still want to be in business sector, just less strategic and more innovative and problem solving. i feel like this master is a good match but at the same time people saying its useless also scares me. any advice please? (i am a international student, creative field background)
r/Anu • u/cakewhatwhat • 2d ago
simply put i am a creative person. Art, fashion/textiles and design are my forte, but i also want these things: networking with innovative startup leaders and like minded students, become someone who leads/manages teams, start my own business later in life, engage in many business ideas, learn to deal with failure quick, quick solutions.
overall i want to be in a creative but business sector engaging with people, ideas and solve problems.
Am I a good fit for this masters? l am also not a domestic student.
any type of opinion and advice would be much appreciated please

Any MPhil applicants to CASS for the 2027 intake received an admission offer yet? Has anyone heard anything about scholarship outcomes specifically for MPhil applicants?

Hi! We are Team GaeUn, currently researching college students’ sleep patterns and morning wake-up experiences.
Have you ever gone to bed early or gotten enough sleep, but still woken up thinking:
“Why don’t I feel refreshed?”
We are conducting a short survey to better understand how often college students experience unrefreshing mornings, how they currently deal with them, and to use these insights to develop a service that helps people wake up feeling more refreshed.
- Eligibility: Undergraduate and graduate students
- Time required: About 5 minutes
- Topics: Sleep habits, how refreshed you feel in the morning, and the methods you currently use to improve your sleep or wake-up experience
- Purpose: Customer validation and development of a service designed to help users have more refreshing mornings
- Survey period: October 15–27, 2026
We would really appreciate it if you could answer based on your actual experiences 🙌

Hi everyone!
I’m an international applicant who submitted a PhD application to ANU’s College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) in August. I only submitted my English test results last week, as I hadn’t included them in my original application. I’ve since received confirmation that my updated English results have been added to my application for assessment.
Recently, I’ve seen quite a few posts from international applicants in other ANU colleges who have already received admission offers, but I haven’t heard anything about my application yet. I know different colleges and research areas may have different timelines, but I’m starting to get a little anxious.┭┮﹏┭┮
I’ve also come across several posts suggesting that PhD admission and scholarship funding in CASS can be very competitive, which has made me even more nervous. My research area is Cultural Studies, and I’m really hoping to hear some news soon. Does anyone have any idea when CASS PhD applicants might start hearing about admission or scholarship outcomes?😖
I’d also love to hear from current or former CASS PhD students who received offers in previous years. If you’re comfortable sharing, I’d be really interested to know a little about your academic background, research area, and scholarship experience.
Any insights or experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!🙏

I'm currently deciding between ANU and UNSW for my undergraduate studies, and my parents want me to choose one of these two universities.
I'm planning to study Cybersecurity or Information Systems. If I choose ANU, the major would be BComp (I will apply for honours in the future), and for UNSW it would be AACS.
I've been researching both universities, but I'm still struggling to decide. ANU appeals to me because of its campus, environment, and overall atmosphere, while UNSW seems to offer better internship opportunities.
Thanks for helping me !

I'm in Year 12 at the moment, and I'm (hopefully) going to be at ANU next year. Between now and then, I have to make a decision on whether to buy a car or not, which is dependent on whether I'll be able to keep it near or on campus for cheap next year. What's the parking situation like around campus?
ey everyone!
We’re a group of ANU students doing ENVS3040, and we’re working with ANU Green on a project about AI and its environmental impact.
AI has become a pretty normal part of uni life, but how often do we actually think about its environmental footprint? We’re hoping to get a better idea of how ANU students and staff use AI, what people think about it, and whether sustainability plays a role in those decisions.
We’d really appreciate it if you could take a few minutes to fill out our survey!
🎁 There’s also a prize draw!
You could be one of five winners of prizes including bike helmets, tote bags and other merch.
Whether you use AI for pretty much everything, only occasionally, or not at all, we’re interested in hearing from you. There are no right or wrong answers, we just want to understand how people across ANU feel about it.
Thanks heaps for helping us out!
Feel free to drop any questions below

Hi everyone, I’m running an in-person research study on campus looking at whether having a conversation with an AI chatbot changes how people judge climate-related claims, and I'm currently looking for volunteers to take part!
What’s involved:
Details:
Researcher: Boji Zhang | Supervisor: Professor Tom Gedeon
Approved by the ANU Human Research Ethics Committee (Protocol H/2023/1438)

I am a prospective student but i only have a 3 year degree in undergrad physics. I want to do the 1 Year Bachelor of Science (degree with honors) Programs in Physics or an MSc coursework in Physics.
I would like to know the advantages and disadvantages of both. Time wise, Difficulty wise and how the classes are taken in general.
In essence which one would you suggest and why?
My main goal is to do research and possibly a PhD.
Any help or other suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks

My brother has completely cut off contact with our family for over a month, and we’re getting increasingly worried.
He attends ANU and lives at Fenner Hall. We’ve tried calling and messaging him, but we haven’t been able to reach him at all. The difficult part is that we haven’t paid his accommodation fees, so I’m worried about whether this could affect his housing situation, too.
I’ve reached out to Fenner Hall, but they haven’t responded to my messages. I’ve also contacted some of his mates, who have reassured me that he’s okay and said he’ll get back to us soon. However, it’s been over a month, and we still haven’t heard anything from him directly.
I want to respect his space if he needs it, but it’s becoming difficult not knowing whether he’s genuinely okay.
I currently attend UNSW in Sydney, and my parents have been asking me to travel to Canberra to check on him in person. I understand why they’re worried, but I’m not sure what to do or whether showing up at his accommodation is the best approach.
Has anyone dealt with something similar at ANU or Fenner Hall? Is there a way to request a welfare check through the university, or would visiting him in person be the better option?

Hi everyone!
I’m an Indian student planning to apply for the Master of Computing at the Australian National University (ANU) for the February 2027 intake.
My undergraduate CGPA is 8.59/10, and I’m trying to understand what scholarship opportunities I might be eligible for.
I have a few questions:
Based on my CGPA, what are my chances of receiving a scholarship at ANU?
What percentage of tuition fee waivers (25%, 50%, or more) have Indian students received for this program?
Are there any merit-based scholarships available for international students applying for the Master of Computing in February 2027?
If you’re an Indian student who received an ANU scholarship with a similar CGPA, could you please share how much you received?
Does ANU automatically consider applicants for scholarships, or do we need to submit a separate application?
I understand that scholarships depend on several factors beyond CGPA, but I’d really appreciate hearing from students who have applied to or are currently studying at ANU, especially those joining in 2027.
Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I got anu early entry which I’m super excited about BUT even though I requested catered, I got put in yukimbrook which I’m really anxious about. I applied for Burgman and wasn’t successful. But I desperately want Ursula, and I’m not sure what to do! I know there will be a change of preference on the portal in November but is that successful? Even if I get put somewhere else I just really don’t want yukimbrook! Was anyone successful with transferring via the portal before semester one? Do I have a good chance getting Ursula even in the second round? I don’t want to have to wait a whole semester :( it’s making me so upset!

As title states, received an early offer to ANU for actuarial studies and got accepted into accomodation. Seriously considering the offer, but have read some things about the university's past chancellor and vice chancellor mismanaging the university's funds/programs?
Have current ANU students experienced any effects of those controversies? Will they possibly affect the resources/facilities/quality of education I have access to, or my ability to frequently get shitfaced at my hall's social events?
