HR is upset we didn’t grow up wanting to be customer service reps

I always take that question as “why do you want this job aside from the obvious that everyone else wants a job for?”.

Yeah it really is not that complicated. All jobs provide money, so answering that you want money doesn't answer the question of why you applied for that particular job.
I've seen this exact post before and every time I think to myself...do people seriously not understand that?

Yeah wow, interviewee, that's still a shit answer.
The whole point of being interviewed is to make them want to hire you. If you don't care about the job -- which is essentially what you're saying when you say "I'm only in it for the money" -- then why wouldn't they move on to someone who does?
And interviewee, we're ALL doing the work for the money. We ALL have to pay for groceries. That's baseline. Every company is going to want more than just a summer job attitude.

Idk, maybe being straightforward & not full of shit is a valuable quality?

No shit every one who applies for a job wants to be paid. Did you even read their comment?

The interviewer is asking questions to learn things about the candidate that they did not already know. Do you seriously believe that the interviewer is unaware that the candidate wants money?
This answer is the equivalent of someone asking you what kind of things you enjoy and you answer "breathing". It isnt being straightforward...its being a flippant asshole.

Jeez, why do people not understand this? EVERY person expects to be paid... what else do you bring to the table that differentiates you? What are you doing to say that makes the employer saying "OK this person is also invested because of xyz?"
