Mod Post AA:TLA Movie Spoiler Period is Over + Rule Reminder / Tweak

Hey folks.

I) Spoilers

  • The new animated film, Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender (AA:TLA) , has been officially available for more than two months now. As such you no longer need to spoiler mark posts about the film.
  • Still don't go out of your way to spoil someone who has expressed they are new to Avatar or haven't seen the film yet. Especially in threads using the post flair "Original Series Only".

II) r/ATLA sub focus

  • This subreddit is specifically focused on ATLA, not Avatar in general. So that means our topic is the original cartoon, ATLA comics, Netflix ATLA, the movie, and other stuff starring Aang and in his era.
  • But NOT: Legend of Korra , various books set pre-ATLA, fan projects about some ancient/future avatar, or the new show Avatar Seven Havens. Do not post your reviews or thoughts or news on Seven Havens here, it will be removed.
  • That said we do allow "crossover posts" (for lack of a better term). As in comparisons between Aang and Korra, discussions of how the ATLA characters were used in LoK, or art where Aang fights Amon.

III) Tweak/Clarification

  • Some "crossover posts" have gotten some reports/complaints. In particular stuff that is mostly about something non-ATLA or looks at various parts of the universe, but something ATLA is mentioned in passing or makes up a small piece of the whole picture.
  • Because of this I want to be clear moving forward. Posts have to be more significantly ATLA - specific. That all posts must in some way genuinely be focused on /about: "ATLA" or "ATLA and X" not "Avatar/X including ATLA". Or otherwise clearly aiming to spark discussion about ATLA.

IV) Other Subs

If your post isn't about ATLA you may want to consider the below subreddits.

  • r/TheLastAirbender - Main sub for the whole franchise / universe
  • r/AvatarSevenHavens - The specific spot for the new show.
  • r/legendofkorra - Like us but for everything LoK.
  • r/Avatar_Kyoshi- A sub for the novels, their protagonists, and more broadly a look at the lore/universe with an emphasis on written works which don't fall neatly within the banner of a show or movie.
  • r/ATLAtv - Narrowly focused on Netflix's ATLA

Mod Post "Avatar Aang The Last Airbender" - Spoiler Discussion Thread Spoiler

FULL SPOILERS (for this movie)  allowed in this thread (and only this thread for today and at least part of the weekend). As a reminder, spoilers outside this thread must be marked until two months after the film's release and no spoilers in the title of posts.

- Additionally keep in mind that not all users here are caught up on every avatar comic/book , let alone news or leaks for Seven Havens. So please keep discussion focused on the movie itself, and if you mention other stuff for comparison/reference, please mark major spoilers.

////

With all of that out of the way... "Avatar Aang The Last Airbender" (AATLA) is a feature length animated film, the first from Avatar Studios. The story is set around twelve years after the original cartoon.

  • The film is available on the streaming service "Paramount +", and for those near NYC and LA there is a limited theatrical run.

Synopsis:

  • Directors: Lauren Montgomery, with Steve Ahn & William Mata co-directing.
  • Screenplay: Tim Hedrick & Christopher Yost.
  • Story by: Hedrick, Kennith Lin and Avatar co-creators Michael Dante DiMartino & Bryan Konietzko.
  • Music: Jeremy Zuckerman.
  • Animation: Flying Bark & Studio Mir
  • Starring: Eric Nam (Aang), Jessica Matten (Katara), Román Zaragoza (Sokka), Dionne Quan (Toph), Steven Yeun (Zuko), and Dave Bautista (Tagah).

Discussion I think the Kuruk show has a time skip

I don't think having the show take place in his childhood is a bad idea, but the appeal of Kuruk comes from events in his prime. And that would let us see Koh steal faces and they could do some body horror with that

Discussion What a show. Deserves honorable mentions in top fives

tldr I’m sure

I know it’s not Japanese so people won’t put it in their top five animes, but this deserves a honorable mention. Re-watching as a full grown adult, I was so blown away by how good this show is.

Thematically it’s so similar to Naruto. Monk(or monk like) characters on their journey, finding understanding that their enemies have chosen the wrong path not bc they’re pure evil. The yin and yang of decisions/weilding and mastering power. Both obviously draw from eastern Buddhist philosophy and Indian meditation.

What sets the show apart for me as an adult is actually the pacing. I love Naruto but during re-watches you can tell when the whole arc only has one imported moment. I found one piece had too many meh episodes to ever get into. This show really has no filler, and less action episodes cover an important philosophical topic.

Coming to the end of the show made me think about this Yin and Yang of everything. Like why this show is so good.

Across the three books it entertains and teaches throughout. When you get towards the end you want it to keep going. But if they did what Naruto and one piece do, requesting 100s/1000s of episodes, you require the writers the add filler that isn’t important.

Anyway, what a good ride to take again

Discussion "Why doesn't she use blood blending" Blood blendingbthis, blood bending that. ETHICS PEOPLE!!

It's like everyone watched that episode on blood blending with their eyes closed geniuenly.

Aside from the obvious full moon technicality its also just rlly inhumane which was very much emphasized even in tlok.

I legit see people mention it in every media piece abt katara as if thats her only great feat

yes its very powerful but like its unnecessary at least imo and out of character for her to blatantly misuse it.

Really reflects our society, I always see ppl inspired by heroes like super man, spiderman and in this case katara but never willing to make or understand the difficult but necessary ethical choices they make..

Also would like to connect this to the broaderr issues in this fandom and how for a very long time everything has been abt power scaling.

Literally the reactions to be movie were "oh they nerfed the gaang so bad" as if they have to win 100% of the time and i feel people just really miss the story aspects of atla nowadays

Discussion Bilibili deletes every kissing scene in ATLA and I'm furious Spoiler

Over the past 15 years, I've watched ATLA again and again. Tonight was probably my seventh time, or even more. I find myself still picking up new things as I get older, and the show still manages to pull me in and move me all over again. An absolute masterpiece in every single way.

But holy shit, watching it on Bilibili pissed me off.

For anyone unfamiliar, Bilibili is a Chinese video platform with scrolling on-screen viewer comments called “弹幕” (danmu). I'd never watched ATLA with danmu before, and the terrible video/audio quality on the pirate sites was getting unbearable, so I paid for a subscription—the infamous “大会员”—before I ended up going back to pirate sites three or four times out of sheer frustration.

The subtitles alone are a mess. Even everyday dialogue often gets mistranslated, left out, or rewritten. I can live with that since I understand what's being said perfectly well.

The censorship is what drove me insane.

I only watched the second half of Book Three there, and every single kissing scene was gone. According to people in the comments, it’s the same throughout the entire show. Aang and Katara, Mai and Zuko, Sokka and Suki—EVERY SINGLE ONE, including the final Kataang kiss in the finale. In that version, even the music specially made for that scene didn't match what was on screen. I'm absolutely furious.

And apparently cutting kissing scenes wasn’t enough. “Boyfriend” and “girlfriend” become “friend” in the subtitles. “I like you” and “I love you” get rewritten to remove the romantic meaning. I remember one danmu comment particularly well: “‘Friend,’ no kissing scenes... guess we're the Fire Nation kids after all.” As in, the kids raised on Fire Nation's propaganda. Or, as I'd put it: there is no kissing in Ba Sing Se.

There’s other nonsense too. “White Lotus” (白莲教) gets changed to a similar-sounding Chinese name (“百炼教,” something like “Hundred Trials Cult”), presumably to avoid any association with the historical Chinese movement during the Ming and Qing dynasties. “Fire Nation army” somehow becomes something like “Blazing Demon Army”. Just casually adding “demon” because apparently translating what the characters actually say is too much to ask.

And there’s something especially ridiculous about authorities being this scandalized by fictional teenagers kissing while under the reign of Winnie the Pooh, hundreds of thousands of corrupt officials get caught, many of them kepts tens or hundreds of mistresses and trading power for sex.

Apparently Aang and Katara are the moral emergency.

Question Favorites element as of the new show and why

Hello for a while now I’ve been wondering what the most favored element is among with ATLA and really just the avatar fandom and everyone, comment your favorite element and why it’s your favorite whether it’s because a beloved character or a specific ability or the element’s bender(the air bisons, mole badgers, etc) or was it because a specific event or the new uniforms within the seven havens.

Let me go first, for me my favorite bending is Air because I love the tattoos especially Tagah’s within the new movie. Additionally to Air bending as shown within the new show I love his hover board, and I love the thought of being one of the with air being able to both cool down the air and heat it up if I master it and if I’m like Zaher I’ll be able to fly though I doubt I’ll be like him, as for the final reason I love air bending is because I can compress the air like Tagah did in the new movie and use it in many ways other than the way he did when going up against gang.

Question Who controls mud?

sry for the larp question. I'm watching ATLA for the first time and just got to s2ep1 scene where Katara throws water at general Fung and he turns it into mud. In this situation would a water bender only be able to control the water and take it out of the dirt. Or would it go to whoever's element takes majority in the mixture?

Discussion Crazy Teorys Spoiler

Just a heads-up: Spanish is my first language, so if there are any mistakes, they might be due to the translation!

Hiii, here are my theories! To fully understand them, I recommend reading all of them, since they complement and correct one another.

1: I have a theory that the poles are safe but cut off from the rest of the world. Although it would make sense for them to be the most damaged areas because of the portals, the opposite could be true. Maybe they are the areas that suffered the least because they were so spiritually “aligned.” This is based on the possibility that what the Avatars have to do is align the world's chakras. I also came up with this theory because one of the cities that are still standing is Republic City, where there was also a portal.

2: This also leads me to another theory: the third portal is what threw spiritual energy out of alignment, and that is what caused the disaster.

3: Continuing with this idea, perhaps Korra managed to seal the third portal, but the consequences were the cataclysm itself, caused by the misalignment of the world's energies.

3.5: Spiritual connection is key to stabilizing the shelters and the Earth itself. At the end of their journey, the Avatars will end up creating a kind of Harmonic Convergence, which will restore the world to its former glory. This will increase the number of benders.

4: In the movie, we see the island of the Three Lion Turtles, where the Immortal Storm is located. I theorize that the poles are in the same condition as this island. Since they are places with so much spiritual energy, they managed to remain protected but cut off from the rest of the world. They could be a kind of spiritual paradise where the cataclysm cannot affect them, but also places you cannot enter. You can only enter and leave freely as a spirit, like the Ocean Spirit.

5: The appearance of the last Lion Turtle and how it will help the Avatars reconnect with their past lives, or perhaps show them their past, as the energy “spirit” does.

5.5: The Lion Turtle, or perhaps another spirit, will appear to teach them how to control spiritual purification. Through this purification, they will manage to heal the world, putting an end to the apocalypse.

6: The spirits know how to “fix” the world and are trying to help the Avatars do so. We can see this through the recurring appearances of the energy “spirit” so far.

7: The appearance of Wan Shi Tong's library. It will appear to help the protagonists learn about the past and will serve to restructure the use of the elements in the present, since the library possesses knowledge of lost elemental sub-skills (perhaps bloodbending, metalbending, sandbending, healing, and healing fire). With this, they will give the “Avatar team” a power-up.
