Question Question about Paladin's Challenge talent and multi-target attacks (1E)
We just ended a game session where an enemy mage (the BBG of this story's arch) attack three different PCs with a multi-attack spell that caused damage and triggered the weakened condition (on hit) on all of them (they all got hit).
The thing is, prior to that, the Paladin had affected the BBG with Paladin's challenge, which would make the BBG take a -4 penalty on attack rolls against any target that is not the paladin that issued it. The two PCs affected alongside the Paladin wouldn't be hit if the -4 were applied, but the GM ruled that the -4 from the challenge wouldn't apply in this case, for the multi-target attack included the Paladin.
The second paragraph of the talent (page 115) states that this penalty is "turned off" until end of turn if the challenged creature attacks their rival (the paladin that successfully used the challenge).
The single example given by the book is a challenged enemy that can multi-attack that attacks the paladin first, which turns off the penalty to hit the paladin's allies with their other attacks in the same turn.
But what about a multi-target attack that includes the paladin as the target? Will the penalty apply to the attack rolls against the paladin's allies, or will it immediately be turned off from having the paladin as one of its targets?
The book doesn't state anything about that and I also can't find an official response to it. What are your interpretations of this rule and, if Pelgrane Press did clarified that, please link it.
The GM is openly asking for his players to make the case to overturn his decision if we believe he interpreted the rules wrongly and if we could explain to him why. I'm honestly on the fence, as (imho) there is not enough information in the text to make a "logically-tight case" in any direction.
