General Advice Spring break tennis resort in the Southeast for kids and adults

• Upvotes

Hi, does anyone have a tennis resort for spring break they recommend?

We live in dc with a late March spring break, so I was thinking something in the Southeast would be a bit warmer and still drivable. Would love to find somewhere with morning drills/match play for adults and clinics for kids (age 8 and 10), and then a heated pool for the afternoon.

I’ve done some initial googling, but having a hard time finding something with morning length kids programming as well.

Technique Advice The Struggle with Grips

For the purposes of this, I will differentiate between two forehand grips:

-the 'steep Grip' - forearm and handle are in a 90° angle, similar to how you'd grip a pull-up bar

-the 'shallow Grip' - forearm is at a shallower angle to the handle, automatically resulting in the index finger having a gap to the middle finger

My dilemma is this:

I've heard the advice (in a YouTube video) to rotate the racket through the thumb and either index or middle finger, so the rotation point is closer to the throat. The rotation point shouldn't be at the end of the handle.
Often it is the case that players grip to tightly with the pinky and ringfinger, rotating at the end of the handle, and because of this having less control and spin.

This correlates well to my experience on court. When trying to rotate with the thumb and index finger, I am playing better and automatically tend to a more shallow grip.

However:
I struggle to maintain a shallow grip, I think it's because of the grip size.

I've tested a few rackets.
The Wilson shape felt good, I could easily feel my Thumb and index deliver the 'grip-strength' and rotate through that. I played with size 3 and think size 4 would give a bit of an improvement.

My current racket is a Yonex Percept, grip size 4. I have 3D-prints of the Yonex shape in size 4 and 5. The larger the handle, either through picking up the larger print or using more overgrips, I feel like I have an easier time to grip with thumb and index finger, therefore shallower grip => better playing.

Gripping the racket properly with Yonex' shape is a lot harder for me, compared to Wilsons'. I tend to mainly grip with pinky and ring-finger.

Now I hear about pro-players using smaller grip sizes. How do they avoid this?

Is there something I am not getting, or is my only solution to use bigger grips? I really like my Percept, but getting a size 5 in Europe is almost impossible.

Does anyone have any experience or additional context in this? I have to be missing something, otherwise a lot of people would play with bigger handles.

Equipment Only breaking cross string

I string my racquets with x one biphase @ 57 lbs on pro staff 97L. Usually lasts for about 8 hrs of hitting (might be a bit longer if i play sets). String break in the middle, however, I only break the cross string. I notice that the cross would fray until it ultimately snaps while the main doesn't notch as fast.

From reading online threads, it seems like this is unusual, and I even heard that it might be technique flaws (e.g. hitting late often). Am I overthinking or should I try to adjust my technique to try to address it somehow (not sure how thou)? It could be that I just do bad string jobs, but I can't tell.

Equipment Something between a Blade v9 100 and PureDrive GT (2009)?

I normally use a Blade v9 100 and I feel it’s fine, but I recently tried an older PureDrive and I enjoyed the hitting experience more. I have read that the PureDrive is quite stiff though so what’s a nice in between of these two rackets for me to consider?

Technique Advice Can you actually see the ball hit your strings?

I’m a 3.0 player with a two-handed backhand and a regular forehand, and I’m wondering: can you actually see the ball make contact with your strings on either stroke?

On both sides, I feel like I never really see that moment. The ball still feels pretty fast to me, and everything from it getting close to me to leaving my racket happens so quickly that I can’t get a clear mental “still frame” of contact. I mostly feel like I’m tracking it coming in and then feeling the hit, rather than actually seeing it.

When I consciously try to watch the contact point, it also feels like the racket itself blocks my view. I don’t feel like I have a clear, unobstructed view of the ball meeting the strings.

Is this normal, or could it suggest something off with my stroke or contact point—too far in front, not far enough in front, etc.? Or am I taking “watch the ball hit the strings” too literally?

One other detail: I’m nearsighted and don’t wear glasses when I play, so that might be part of it. I tend to rely on feel quite a bit. Quention to people with nearsighted glasses, do you wear them playing tennis? if so, do you have a prescription sport glasses or just the daily pair?

Curious what other players actually see at contact, especially people who remember what it was like at the 3.0 level.

Technique Advice should I waste money and time on a kick serve lesson? 3.0

I am a 3.0 with a very strong first, flat serve. I have an okay, reliable, deep second slice serve. I sometimes will try to put topspin on it to kick it, but it's never extreme and most opponenets don't really struggle with it.

I am struggling to bump up to 3.5. My question is, should I waste time and money trying to learn a kick serve? I think I have the ability to get really good at it, but just need a couple tweaks.

Or should I just focus on masteirng my ground strokes / rally play?

Opinion Is it me or are the Tennis Warehouse personalities not that good at tennis?

Don’t get me wrong I don’t expect them to be 5.0s but they barely look like 3.5s in their clips. It’s hard to take their reviews seriously. Let me know what you think.

Admittedly, I only had about three coaching sessions before I started playing 4 hours a week (a mix of doubles and singles). I really want to improve, and I’d love some advice on the top 5 things I should focus on to take my game to the next level.

Equipment New Tennis Racquet

Hi guys,
I’m facing a bit of a conundrum and could use some forum wisdom. I’m 46 years old and have been playing tennis for about 7–8 months now. My game is coming along okay, but it’s time for an upgrade. I’ve been using a borrowed Yonex VCore 98L (285g), which I now need to return to its owner, so I’m looking to buy a racquet of my own to carry me through the next two years of my journey.
Right now, I’m looking at two options: the Wilson Blade 100L (285g, matching my current Yonex weight) and the Babolat Pure Aero 100L (lighter, around 270g).

Playstyle & Challenges:
I play with an Eastern grip and tend to hit relatively flat. While I am actively working on adding more topspin to my game, my biggest challenge right now is timing, I still frequently dump balls into the net or sail them deep.

The Grip & Bevel Dilemma:
I started out out with an old Wilson Smash Pro in a size 3 grip, which felt a bit too large for my palm. The borrowed Yonex is a size 2, which fits my hand much better. However, I’ve noticed a big difference in the handle shapes: the Wilson bevel design feels more rectangular, which helps me orient my hand and index knuckle easily. The Yonex handle feels noticeably rounder, making it harder to feel the bevels. Grips are the same on both the racquets. Is handle/bevel shape something I should heavily weigh when choosing between these brands?

Given my age, experience level, flat-to-topspin transition, and grip preference, which direction would you recommend? I want something user-friendly that will help me build consistency. Thanks in advance!

General Advice Need tips for keeping score

Basically, I routinely suffer from complete and total score amnesia. It is common for me to lose track of both the score during the game and even the larger score within the set.

Knowing this, I have tried repeatedly saying the score either out loud or in my head. But at some point during every match, the brain takes a break and gets tired of counting each point, thus the amnesia begins.

I will ask for a reminder of the score from time to time from my opponent, but doing so at every other point is rightfully ridiculous.

The even and odd side will sometimes help me guess out the score during games using maths. Though again, it can be a bit of a coin flip for me. The deuces are comforting because it can only be won or lost on the left side, easy enough to figure out what's happening.

The nice thing about suffering from score amnesia is that I am truly always being focused on the present and on winning the next point. Winning or losing games occur almost unexpectedly, usually only when I notice the opponent change their behavior like picking up and holding on to the balls or when they begin lobbing it over the net. Or when they approach the net to for a handshake when the match is over (à la Zverez). If, God forbid, someone challenges the score... I will usually just be paralyzed and defer even if my gut thinks it's wrong.

Some partners I play with have some sort of mnemonic memory and can accurately recall the outcome of every point down to the exact shot. This is not me, and I envy those with this magical gift.

What advice do you have or what method do you use to keep score?

General Advice Tryna start a tennis YouTube channel

Hey all! I am currently a customer service rep at Tennis Warehouse. Found out today that I'm gonna be the longest standing service rep in my position (after a year and a half) and it hit me... I really wanna do something else for work. 😂

Don't get me wrong. I love tennis. So much so I've wanted to start my own YT channel (I made it, but haven't posted anything yet). But I feel like I've mastered my job more or less and want to try something new. There is a racquet specialist position open, but the schedule just doesn't line up with what I need. I've been looking at FT jobs outside of tennis that would allow me to advance and make more money. I've also graduated from college in Business Administration since starting there, so I want to try and put that to good use as well. I wanted to know if there was anyone on the thread who had

A) Any tips on how to get started, getting products from manufacturers to review, or just any general advice on starting a tennis-related business on your own
B) Anything they want answered or feels like needs to be talked about more
C) Any products that you feel haven't been talked about as much due to availability (cough cough Yonex) or any other reason.

Thanks in advance for any (helpful) comments! 😊

General Advice Can you play without a replacement grip?

Look at me! I just won $1000 in a tournament 😮

Post image

The tournament was called the Kingsman Tennis Clash. An amazing experience from start to finish. I got a bunch of gifts, including Reebok shoes, Mejuri jewelry, and Wilson clothes. Registration was $165 which felt expensive at the time but honestly not bad at all when you factor in the gifts.

The format was unlike anything I’ve ever played. There was a men’s division and women’s division. Each division had only four players. It was a single elimination bracket meaning I only needed to win two matches to win the whole thing. Here’s the crazy part: each match was best of three games. Not sets. GAMES. And no ad scoring on top of that.

Even though the matches were short- it was such a fun event. For the first time ever- I got to play a match that had an umpire that made line calls and announced the score. There were ball boys/ball girls. And tons of free food and drinks. Honestly, I think it’s the closest thing to playing a professional match that I’ll ever experience.

If interested in joining the next one, follow @cnaleisureclub on ig

Below is a link to a short video I made of the whole experience.

General Advice Why can't i hit a f***ing forehand!!!!?

I am so angry. I used to play tennis when i was young but stopped playing now getting back into it 15 years later. I haven't been practicing much, and all i've been doing is playing with a friend (also a beginner) maybe once every few weeks and sometimes hit against the wall.

Suprsingly - my two handed backhand is super natural and not too bad, volleys too, my serve is trash but that can come later

But waht is really really really pisisng me off is my forehand. I don't know what i'm doing wrong, i've read lots of things, i've watched videos. I don't know what i'm doing. I can slice a forehand back easily but i cna not hit a normal top spin forehand.

Anyone have any advice? The ball either goes flying high which suggests my tennis raquet is open face but then i try and have it more close and i try and whip top spin but then the ball barely goes over the net it's just so frustrating, even when i just drop a ball in front of me and hit it i cant even hit it properly im so angry and annoyed nothing works
