Question How do I access the Zen Boosts feature?

This subreddit is asking me to provide the version number, it's the latest version of Zen at the time i post this (v.1.23.3b)

Well, I know that Zen Boosts exist, and I wanna access them, but I just can't find the button, I also looked in the browser's documentation, and there was no section for Boosts, so how do I access them?

If anyone’s interested, I recently made an improvement for the Zen browser so there are convenient shortcuts to quickly open links, and possibly edit them. Maybe it’ll be useful to someone.

Bug Troubleshoot mode issue after update v1.23.3b (Linux)

Zen Troubleshoot Mode fails to reopen (Zen 1.23.3b, Fedora KDE)

When I select Troubleshoot Mode, Zen closes but doesn't reopen. Clicking the app icon does nothing, and multiple Zen processes remain running in the background. I have to terminate those processes and launch Zen again from the terminal to restore normal operation.

I also tested Browser Toolbox with a completely new profile, but it still fails to appear. Has anyone experienced this in Zen 1.23.3b, or know what might be causing it?

Bug How Do I Fix This Visual Bug from Zen Version 1.23.3b?

Upon updating zen on windows 10 and after disabling the library feature, I've been having this permanent visual bug in where an open new tab and workspaces(?) are appearing where they aren't supposed to be. This seems to be an issue with only private tabs.

Discussion I built zenpilot so Claude can use Zen. It's macOS-only for now. Linux/Windows folks, would you use it?

Zen is my daily browser and I kept missing Claude in Chrome, so I built zenpilot. It lets Claude Desktop or Claude Code use Zen: open and switch tabs, read pages, click, type, scroll, take screenshots. The video is Claude filling in and submitting a test form.

No extension. It starts Zen with its built-in remote control on and talks to it over localhost.

The privacy side:

  • Claude only works on sites you allow, so you decide which pages it reads (and sends to Claude). The "allow this site?" popups go to you, not to Claude, and Enter always picks the safe option.
  • It can't touch cookies, passwords or downloads.
  • Setup offers a separate logged-out profile, so your accounts stay out of it.
  • Remote control normally switches off Safe Browsing and the popup blocker in your profile. zenpilot stops that.
  • Downside: while remote control is on, other local apps could connect to it too. Quit Zen and reopen it normally when done.

The catch: it's alpha and macOS-only (tested on Zen 1.23). Lots of you are on Linux/Windows, and Linux is probably the easier port. Before I start:

  • Would you actually use this on Linux or Windows?
  • How did you install Zen (Flatpak, AppImage, tarball, AUR, winget...)? That decides where it looks for Zen and your profiles.

Mac users can try it now: the `.mcpb` from releases for Claude Desktop, or `uv tool install zenpilot && zenpilot setup` for Claude Code.

Question Hi, how to make the newtab blank page transluceny with blur effect?

I'm on the latest build of zen currently, I also use wayland if that matters, I tried a lot of solutions, the closest I could get was just plain transparency which looks weird and is also not even customizable it's either on or off, there's no slider.

I also have sine modloader installed so if the solution needs it in some way I can use it.

Question Frustration with themes and dark/light mode

I'm loving Zen, and have a number of spaces set up. But I'm struggling to come up with decent theme colours for the spaces sidebar. I can get ones that look great during the day but end up hard to read when the system changes to dark mode (Mac). Either still too bright or dark with the wrong text colour. There doesn't seem to be a way to really differentiate colours and text on mode change. Anyone got any tips? I'm loving Zen, and have a number of spaces set up. But I'm struggling to come up with decent theme colours for the spaces. I can get ones that look great during the day but end up hard to read when the system changes to dark mode (Mac). V1.23.3b.

Firefox itself is much better at themes. Light mode gets black text on light background. Dark mode gets white text on dark background.

Discussion Combined Library and Sidebar

Yes this was made with ai but i still think it is cool. As the tittle says. library stuff overlays over the sidebar at the same width so nothing is pushed over. also allowed for toolbar items to show as well. everything works. what do yall think?

Some Love ZenLibraryTweaks [Sine Mod]

This is a mod which adds nice features to the library, including bookmarks section and space routing and also letting you customize the library sidebar so you can remove/add sections from it, which i feel like should be there natively.

You can now also Alt+Click on any history or bookmark item to show it in glance view and it also has a few optional features as per your preference :)

I suggest going through the readme for the installation process and list of features

Question What's the best auto tab closer extension for Zen?

I recently switched to Zen and so far its pretty good. I like the stronger privacy settings and it's not missing anything big for me... except auto closing tabs.

What is the best way to get the tab cleanup experience in Zen? I've found a few extensions but the descriptions aren't great. So thought I'd just ask the community here.

Discussion Made a simple profile picker for Zen on Linux, since the old profile switcher is gone

Post image
28 Upvotes

TL;DR: a small open source app that shows your Zen profiles as a grid. Click one and Zen opens with it.

Since the old profile switcher was removed, switching between my personal, work and school profiles meant going through about:profiles every time. So I built this.

What it does:

  • Opens Zen with the profile you click
  • Creates, renames and sets an emoji icon for each profile
  • Deletes safely: you type the name to confirm, open profiles are protected, and the folder goes to the Trash
  • Works with both the Flatpak and native installs
  • English and Italian interface

Install (Linux only for now):

pipx install git+https://github.com/FedericoGrim/zen-profile-selector zen-profile-selector --install-desktop

Source code (GPL-3.0):

https://github.com/FedericoGrim/zen-profile-selector

It's unofficial. Windows/macOS support and more languages are open issues if anyone wants to help. Feedback welcome!

Question How to change the default opening for zen browser?

Thumbnail

The first picture is how the zen browser opens. Like when I open the browser, this is the home page or whatever it is. I want to change that and I have checked out various settings inside the browser. I came accross the firefox homepage thing and the second picture is how I customised that firefox homepage. Now I want that homepage to be what there is whenever I open zen. But the only settings related to that i found were those in the third picture and its not changing anything even if I change the settings. What can I do here? How do I get that second picture as my homepage?

Bug What happened to the pinned websites?

After the new update (1.23.3b), I can no longer access my pinned sites when clicking on the "+" icon. They used to show up under the urlbar and it was a great feature. I went to about:newtab and enabled shortcuts (I didn't disable them before) but they are still not appearing under the urlbar. Any way to get them back?

The number of newly created tabs is not the same in each space so I cannot guess what could be the reason.

Discussion Add-on to save memory: Unload on Demand

I have developed the add-on Unload on Demand, out of my own need and decided to publish it publicly. I will explain what it does, why i developed it and how it is different than other similar add-ons.

1. What does it do?

It unloads the tabs other than the currently open one. It does that through the 2 context menu (right click menu) buttons: Unload Others and Unload Others (Force). The latter button tries to unload all other tabs no matter what they are doing in the background. The former button doesn't unload the tab if the tab is playing media and NOT MUTED. You can use this add-on to save memory or stop the media/background task/anything that other tabs are executing, all at once. It is disabled on private windows (not optional at the moment).

2. Why did I develop it?

I used to use Auto Tab Discard. It wasn't perfect but did the job, until it didn't. In the previous versions of zen that add-on stopped working and marked as disabled automatically. As of now the problem is fixed but i already developed my own add-on the exact way i want it :).

3. How is it different than others?

  • First of all, this add-on, Unload on Demand, is triggered only when the buttons are clicked. It doesn't auto unload tabs. That means there is 0 background task. No tracker, no counter, nothing. Even the source code itself is unloaded after a while of the last usage.
  • Some old add-ons try to unload tabs by replacing the content with a blank page. UoD uses modern firefox APIs to discover and unload(discard) the tabs.
  • It doesn't alter the title of the tab. Some other add-ons do that and it creates weird inconsistency between the manually unloaded tabs and tabs handled by the add-on. With this add-on, unloaded tabs look faded the default way zen handles them.
  • I used to use Auto Tab Discard but it wasn't unloading all the tabs. I understand the media playing tabs, but also it didn't unload some tabs like google translate, deepl and notion from time to time. it was a bummer to make sure all the tabs are unloaded one by one. UoD is more aggressive in that regard and provides option to force unloading.
  • Zen provides Unload Space and Unload other Spaces functionalities. However these buttons doesn't unload Essential Tabs. Also Unload Space unloads the currently active tab too.

Unfortunately it cannot detect the tabs from other working spaces but zen already can unload other spaces as i mentioned previously.

This project is open source.
Install directly from firefox add-ons marketplace.

Give it a try if you like the idea behind the add-on. Please share your thoughts.
