Monthly Zcash Discussion - August 01, 2026 - Use this thread for general chatter, basic questions, and if you're new to Zcash
What is Zcash?
Zcash is a privacy preserving digital currency. It is the first blockchain to leverage a novel technology called Zero-knowledge proofs to enable privacy and selective transparency. Zero-knowledge proofs allow transactions to be verified without revealing the sender, receiver or transaction amount. Selective disclosure features within Zcash allow a user to share some transaction details, for purposes of compliance or audit.
Development work on Zcash began in 2013 by Johns Hopkins professor Matthew Green and some of his graduate students. The development was completed by the for-profit Zerocoin Electric Coin Company, LLC, led by Zooko Wilcox, a Colorado-based computer security specialist and cypherpunk. Over time, this company rebranded and converted to a non-profit org now known as the Electric Coin Company (ECC). Zcash development now occurs with support from ECC employees, the Zcash Foundation, and many community members through community elected funding streams that originate from ongoing Zcash mining rewards.

Which wallet do you use to store your ZEC?
I am using Zkool, what do you think about it? It is very simple and functional. However, there are some bugs.
Do you think there are better ZEC wallets for Linux?

For people who hold ZEC on Solana, what's your current process for moving it into a shielded Zcash balance? Is it straightforward, or are there pain points?

A hacker used zcash and get indentified, wtf?
Im hearing people mentioning this, how the hacker got isentified using zcash, people saybits a honeypot and stuff. Before believing any of this, i want to ask here first

ZEC Network Activity & Decoupling from BTC? On-Chain Trends Ahead of NU7, the $WINK ETF Filing, and EU AMLR Shifts
Looking at the 4-hour chart, there has been a noticeable shift in volume and network activity, and it looks largely detached from general BTC movement right now. What is everyone's read on how network adoption and on-chain metrics develop from here as we head into late 2026 and early 2027?
From a protocol standpoint, the upcoming NU7 network upgrade is a massive step forward and succeeding on the testnet, particularly with cutting block target times down to 25 seconds and rolling out the Network Sustainability Mechanism to support ongoing miner incentives and protocol security. Alongside that, the S-1 registration statement for the proposed spot Zcash ETF filed by Winklevoss Asset Services, naming Cypherpunk Technologies as the ecosystem partner and Gemini Trust as custodian, points to a serious institutional framework taking shape around shielded tech.
At the same time, the regulatory side has a hard deadline looming with the July 2027 EU AMLR rules restricting privacy assets on centralized European exchanges. While self-hosted, peer-to-peer shielded transfers remain fundamentally unaffected, that timeline will inevitably shift how global liquidity is routed between compliant venues and sovereign wallets over the next few quarters. What is your take on how these protocol updates and institutional filings balance against the coming regulatory transition, and what other on-chain trends or technical developments are you tracking going into next year?

NU7 is live on testnet, curious how much faster Zcash will feel
Saw that NU7 is now active on testnet.
Going from 75-second target blocks to 25 seconds sounds like a pretty nice improvement. I’m also curious about the shielded transaction limits they’re introducing, especially how they’ll affect wallet performance when the network gets busy.
Privacy is one thing, but making private transactions feel smooth enough for everyday use matters too.
Will be interesting to see how this plays out during testing.

IMO, this is a good buying oppo
The Winklevoss twins are setting up a Zcash ETF, and this means they will be buying metric tons of ZEC in the near future. They love Zcash, because they're smart.

THORChain’s treasury just added $50k ZEC and enabled trading
THORChain’s treasury added ZEC to their trading pools about 45 minutes ago. Zcash is inevitably going to be on every exchange in the world
What happens when the world has rapid accessibility to privacy?

Is anyone here still solo mining Zcash? I started with a $100 Z9 Mini
I’ve been trying to solo mine Z-cash for awhile hoping to get a old Z11, but I saw the prices rocket from $700 for a used Z11 back in July to $1700 for a used Z11 now🫠
So I ended up buying a used Z9 mini which gives me a 1 in 1700 chance per day of hitting a block, for 300W it’s not bad. I’m curious if anyone else is solo mining, I created the video above documenting the setup and the WiFi-mod I did if anyone wants to follow along.
Also curious if anyone else has any cool mods they’ve done to their Z9 mini?
Zcash official Telegram group banned in Australia?
I'm a member of the telegram group but now when I click the group it says, "This group can't be displayed because it violated local laws (Australia)."
Does anyone know what's up with this?

CTRLPool now offers Datum Support for Zcash Miners!
x.comAt CTRL, we've always been a huge fan of DATUM.
That's why today we are announcing we now have scripts for 1 command install and setup for nodes and datum gateways on a Linux server.
Just input your payout wallet, and the script sets up a node, syncs it, and sets up a gateway for you to point your miners to.
You'll also notice a new addition to the datum list: $ZEC
Over the past few weeks we've been working and testing #Zcash mining over Datum and are now releasing it to the world.
It’s technically still in beta, so please let us know if you spot any issues. We hope the Zcash community uses this to help decentralize their network.

I have an old wallet.dat file from zcashd that may have some funds, how in the heck do I read this?
This toolchain really seems a mess, even for crypto. I'm on linux and the wallet files are from an old windows drive from 2020. It has a password but I should be able to remember it. Seed phrase is lost. Zallet has an import wallet.dat function but the whole thing is very beta. I got it running in docker but I'm struggling and that feature is in beta. Am I missing something here? Should I just fire up the deprecated zcashd in offline mode and dump the seed phrase? What's the sanctioned approach here? I can find next to no info online. Thanks

Will Bitcoin have Privacy Enabled Soon
Zcash is on a tear which is awesome, but I’m wondering if other L1s will figure out a way to enable private transactions in the coming years. What happens to $ZEC then?

Possible scam: Zodl Desktop has arrived
Hello,
today I received an email "Zodl Desktop has arrived - Full-node privacy on your computer" which, for me, is an obvious scam:

The link was to "zodlwalet[dot]live" (do not enter, I've checked it for you 😁 ). The page itself is a rough copy of zodl[dot]com but with a link to exe file:

Checked the certificate: issued by "Let's Encrypt" yesterday... 😅
ZEC is going up, apparently they try to catch some prey on that... Stay safe!

Privacy Isn’t About Hiding, It’s Protecting Value and Competitive Advantage
Individuals, businesses and countries have been exchanging value long before fiat money or crypto existed.
The medium changes. The core does not: value exchange and competitive advantage.
A simple business example.
A company develops expertise in a particular field. Over time, it identifies the right partners, builds relationships and creates a network that gives it an edge over competitors.
As the saying goes, “Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.”
Whether value is exchanged through commodities, fiat money or crypto, businesses will rarely want every relationship, transaction pattern and strategic connection exposed publicly.
Not necessarily because they are avoiding tax, hiding money or doing something illegal.
Simply because that is not how competition works.
For many businesses, the product or service is only part of their value. Their network, suppliers, partners, clients, counterparties and the relationships between them, can itself be a major competitive advantage.
This is why automatically associating privacy coins with large-scale exploitation misses the broader issue.
Regulation**,** whether through AML, KYC or newer regulatory frameworks, should certainly bring discipline and accountability. Privacy and regulation do not have to be opposites.
Look back to Bitcoin in 2009.
Bitcoin offered pseudonymity rather than complete anonymity. But as blockchain analytics, AI and external datasets become increasingly sophisticated, transaction activity can potentially be connected with information from exchange KYC records, merchant records, publicly posted donation addresses, address reuse, transaction patterns and wallet-clustering techniques.
And the party interested in discovering those connections may not always be a regulator.
It could just as easily be a competitor trying to understand another company's valuable network.
This is not an anti/pro Bitcoin, ZEC, Monero, etc or regulation argument. Nor is it about predicting which coin will have what price in the future.
There is a much bigger fish to fry.
Some assets may continue primarily as mechanisms for transferring value. Others may become stores of value. Others may enable entirely new economic activity.
The more important question is:
Does the asset or network enable the creation, protection or exchange of real value?
That brings me back to something I wrote earlier:
“Anything that is limited and has value will be wanted by both the good and the bad. It becomes a game of who controls how much of it — and, even more importantly, who is considered good or bad at any given point in time.”
