New to yoga, r/yoga, looking for resources or 2026 challenges? Start here.

As ever, If you are new to the sub or new to yoga, WELCOME! There is an immense amount of information available in this sub, and an excellent community of people. This thread covers some of the basics about yoga and about the sub itself; please take the time to review if you're new here. If you still have questions, you're welcome to message the moderators.

Yoga and meditation challenges are in the stickied comment. I may end up adding more than just those 2 types to support those who are working to make movement a habit, not just yoga; interested in other things? Let us know in the comments. Likewise, if there are challenges missing here, please send a modmail and we'll check them out!

  • If you're new to yoga and looking for information to get started, please take a few minutes to read through the Getting Started section.

  • If you have a question, PLEASE try search and check out the FAQ before creating a new post. As noted in rule 2, commonly asked questions are removed and directed to the above - especially at the start of the year when the same question is often posted multiple times a week or even a day.

The Basics

Styles - there's a nice rundown of the various styles in the FAQ - here's a direct link.

... but where do I START?

If you've never done yoga EVER and are going to start with a studio class and you're terrified, a restorative class is a good introduction to a studio and the various props. It's slow. You don't have to worry about keeping up, and I've yet to encounter a restorative class where reaching your toes was a thing. From there, as mentioned in the Getting Started section, hatha is a solid choice. Pick up the basics, and everything else is easier to learn.

Mats

Try search for sure, but of course there's a list of topics in the FAQ. The big names haven't changed much over the years, and what has is well covered by search. We'll probably do another megathread in the coming weeks.

Sweat

Yep, it happens. Search for 'sweat', 'sweaty hands', and 'mat + sweat'. Towels are also very handy.

Sore <insert part here>

Wrists and back especially can be a problem at first. Definitely try searching for your specifics before creating a new post, but do ask if you don't find things!

Online Resources

The FAQ- Yes, even the old threads are useful..

This post is well worth the read regarding learning yoga at home. We inevitably hear that this post is anything but beginner friendly, the point of the post is to highlight some of the risks, because questions about those risks are some of the most commonly asked.

Here's a link to a newbie resources thread.

And the perennial copypasta of key information about the sub, the rules, etc.:

Reminders:

  • It's in the sidebar, it's in the rules, it's in the note when you create a new post, it's even already up there . PLEASE utilize search and the FAQ before creating a new post. Especially around the first of the year, it's not unusual to see 3 versions of the same post in a day, asking questions that are well covered in the sub. If your post is removed because the answers are available there the mod team is not scolding you, we're just letting you know why it was done and reminding you that the answers you seek already exist. And yes, the mod team finds themselves busy doing just that, especially around the start of the year. 2026 note: We're trying something new for this year. Details to come.

  • /r/yoga is not the place for medical advice. This is always a handy reminder.

  • Addendum to the above - Yoga philosophy and western medicine are different. There is room for both in this sub. This means that things like subtle bodies and energy (prana) movement and chakras all have a place here as well as discussion from a western perspective. There is no demand that anyone agrees with what is presented, but rule 1 applies in these cases- be respectful. This includes posts about cultural appreciation and those about purely physical practice vs. one that encompasses all 8 limbs.

  • Yes, we have a wiki and FAQ . (And they're awesome.) The FAQ and search are the best places to start if you're new to yoga or have questions about styles, equipment, injuries, or resources. FAQ updates will be coming, but in the meantime, we have continued to leave up questions that haven't been in awhile to keep more up-to-date information available when it exists.

  • Yes, they're even available via app and mobile. Yes, really. (The sidebar, too!) It can take a little looking, but we haven't yet found an app without access to the sidebar (aka community info).

  • Reddit's guidelines are still the foundation of how we approach spam in /r/yoga, and bans will continue to be a thing as needed. Need the details? Reddit's guidelines are here. If your first post to the sub is spam, and the mods check your post history and find you're doing nothing but promotion, do not be surprised if you're banned.

  • This sub is not for market research. It's a community. Requests for the sub to tell you what we love or hate about our yoga mats and t-shirts will be removed, as will asking us to fill out surveys for that or your thesis research or help you with your homework assignment. Those are not the only such examples. When in doubt, feel free to message the mods ahead of time. Established community members can message mods ahead of time for permission on a case-by-case basis. Blatant spam may result in an immediate, permanent ban (yes, t-shirt and poster spam are still a one-way ticket to bansville, ditto your awesome new AI-powered app).

  • We utilize the automoderator to cut down on spam. This includes minimum account age/karma requirements (no, we don't publish them). If your account is relatively new and something isn't showing up, odds are good it's been temporarily removed for manual review by mods- especially if there isn't a bot comment. Sometimes we catch them in the first 5 minutes, but sometimes it's a few hours between mod sweeps. If you've posted something that isn't showing up and it's been a few hours, you're welcome to message the mods (keeping in mind that it's possible it will be a bit before a mod sees it- please be patient!) and ask about it- including a link is much appreciated.

  • Shortened links get caught in reddit's spam filter, and we do not approve links reddit has removed in these cases. This includes amazon (a.co usually) links. If you want your link to be visible, it's a good idea to skip the 'share' option and grab the full link from your address bar (even if you're on mobile). A quick tutorial for amazon links, using the first actual yoga mat link that search provided: https://www.amazon.com/Gaiam-Exercise-Exercises-Metallic-Medallion/dp/B07PTNTS3R/ref=sr_1_8?crid=1S8AX8JSYP9YS&keywords=yoga+mat&qid=1671516651&sprefix=yo%2Caps%2C683&sr=8-8 Typically you have the address bit (amazon.com), a bit of friendly description (Gaiam-Exercise-Exercises-Metallic-Medallion), then dp/ and the item's ID (super important! in this link it's B07PTNTS3R). EVERYTHING AFTER THIS CAN BE REMOVED FROM YOUR LINK. In fact, please do! Everything else is tracking information telling amzn how you got there, and/or referral information. Referral/affiliate links aren't permitted, regardless of where they are from. (Classpass referral code spammers, see ban note above.)

  • Your mod team is human (you totally thought we were unicorns and rainbow-chasing leprechauns, but aside from cosplay and Halloween, not so much). Part of modding is making judgement calls, and sometimes we remove things that we can't be sure there isn't a bot behind that turns out to be totally legit because another real, in-the-flesh reddit user actually did post. :) Also, the influx of AI bots either training or farming karma in comments keeps growing, making it doubly difficult some days. Much like the point above, feel free to ask.

  • Discussions on the Sutras have been collected on a wiki page here. Sadly, the resource with collected translations is no longer a valid link. If anyone has an updated link, feel free to send it via modmail. Anyone interested in heading up a round of discussions like these, feel free to reach out! This mod at least would love to see air time for yoga beyond asana.

  • [COMP] (Check Out My Pose) posts have and continue to be raised as a topic periodically in the community. The mods, however, are done discussing it. The tag was instituted to allow those who do not wish to see those posts a means to filter them out, and for those who want to see them, no additional action need be taken. For those unaware and interested, /u/BeyondMars posted the following last time it came up to get everyone up to speed- here's the section on rule 4, to which I added the link:

Search the history of this sub for discussions on [COMP] poses. Probably two years ago now? Awhile ago There is a VERY LARGE part of this sub that doesnt wan't them to have a place here at all. The gist of it is that people come to reddit and dont want it to be like another yoga instagram, or something, I dont know. But there were portions of time in this sub when our ENTIRE front page was yoga pics. COMP was an effort to a compromise that would allow people to filter them out if they didnt want them there... In regards to the self-doxxing aspect. Sexual harassment, and online bullying have originated in this sub at least four times that I was made aware of. This rule was instituted to keep everyone safe. I don't care if YOU want your instagram accounts on the sub (self promotion?) but we are keeping people safer with this rule and the way we enforce it. Its going to stay. Take the extra 2 minutes and upload it to imgur.

  • Also on the topic of [COMP] posts (and I still (still!!) can't believe it needs to be said): Sexual/sexualized/objectifying comments are not welcome here. Removals are guaranteed, and warning vs. suspension vs. permaban will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Sexualized anything isn't welcome here. Y'all have the rest of reddit for that, so please take it there.

  • Addendum from 2024: The topic of yoga's roots, yoga as a workout, cultural appropriation, etc., continues to be a fraught and contentious one. As with other topics, some posts are removed and referred to search. Those that remain up are not a poo-throwing cage match in an effort to prove the validity of a single point of view! Above all, rule 1 applies to everyone choosing to participate in this subreddit. You may not practice for the same reasons someone else does, but treating others with respect while participating here is expected. Yoga practice is what it is for whomever undertakes it regardless of the opinions and approval of one stranger on the internet. As with the previous bullet point, removal/suspension/perma will happen as needed, and which it is will be case-by-case. Be like Wil.

Yoga & Weight-Lifting

Hello,

Love yoga, but also love weight-lifting. Are there other folks in this sub that do both? Any advice or resources on how to structure a yoga and weight lifting regiment is greatly appreciated.

Right now my routine is basically as follows:
-Monday: Squats, Bench, OverHead Press Tricep Extensions all 4x10 then core
-Tuesday: Hot Power Fusion
-Wednesday: rest
-Thursday: Deadlift, bent over rows, lat pulls all 4x10 then core
-Friday: core restore
-Saturday: yoga sculpt
-Sunday: light swimming maybe like a core restore or c2 class

So as you can see my lifts are basically just one day of push compounds and one day of pull compounds 4x10. I’ve been doing this for a while and probably need to start changing the sets/reps, maybe incorporate more isolation lifts, idk? I think it is probably fine leaving the yoga days as they are.

TL DR; need advice on structuring weight lifting and yoga regiment. Have been doing same lifts about 8 weeks now.

what's the point of continuing like this

• Upvotes

a bit of ranting to get your view but also a serious thought.

51yo, recently went back on the mat after long iatus, and I do believe that during the first couple of weeks I somehow broke my meniscus twisting my leg, I dont know if sitting or else. Yesterday I had the result of the MRI scan, and i understand that indeed there is something wrong, and I will try to see a doctor next week.

I always sit on a brick because my hips are very tight. With the left leg/knee no issues and I can have my left heel getting close to the brick. I used to do so also with the right leg, and I did so during the first two weeks a month ago. Now not anymore, due to pain on the side of my right knee. The consequence is that I do struggle a lot to find a decent comfortable starting asana (which is also the last asana) during my practice, making me very nervous not just because I cannot do it, but because I am really uncomfortable and I feel that my back is hunched. I cannot relax nor breath properly. (All this while everyone else is perfectly aligned and entering into the right mood, but this would be another conversation). It is simply uncomfortable and unsustainable for me. Today I tried to stretch the right leg in front of me while the left was in the right crossed position, or tried to have somehow a symmetrical position with both legs but still struggling to find anything that could work. So the question is: what's the point of continuing practicing if my starting position and final position are giving me frustration and nervousness? I could, however it would simply be some kind of gymnastic/workout rather than yoga.

anyone with POTS/dysautonomia attempted hot yoga?

feels like all the yoga studios near me are transitioning exclusively to hot yoga and those are the only classes that work with my schedule too

I'm hesitant to try it because historically things like hot tubs/ saunas make me very dizzy/ nauseous (although I can tolerate very hot weather? idk maybe it's different but not really the main point here). It's pretty rare for me to fully pass out though

However, as of recently, my POTS has been under control relatively well and I'm wondering if maybe there's a chance I could do hot yoga. I also have raynaud's and terrible circulation so the boosting circulation part of it appeals to me, but obviously the dysautonomia is my primary consideration

yoga for professional guitarist

Hi! I was trying to find a few simple poses that I could offer my husband, who is a professional guitar player (for about 30 years!). He is not flexible and doesn't have a yoga practice. However, he is getting older (46) and things are tight. Does anyone here have suggested postures that I can help him with that are not too intimidating and could benefit a person who regularly plays guitar several hours a day, most days of the week? Probably shoulders, back, arms, and hands are most impacted. Thank you!

Yoga Studios: Stop Complaining About ClassPass and DO Something About It

I'm a former yoga instructor, and at various times, I've been a studio member and Classpass user. I see so many posts from studio owners complaining about ClassPass, including a very active one yesterday. Studios make less money off ClassPass versus customers buying direct from the studio, and yet, here's what I see frequently:

  • Studios offering no benefits to membership that you wouldn't get from booking the class on ClassPass
  • Drop-ins at more than double the price of booking through ClassPass
  • Even memberships are more expensive than a ClassPass membership if you look at the number of classes
  • Memberships with less flexibility than Classpass, even if the person only goes to your studio (i.e. Pay $100 for 4 classes a month, or something of that nature, with no rollovers)
  • Studios allowing any unfilled spot to be bookable on ClassPass
  • Equivalent policies for ClassPass and directly booked classes. Pilates studios are especially guilty of often having a 12-hour cancellation policy.

Here are some of the top reasons customers prefer ClassPass, and what you could do about it as a studio, even if you use ClassPass:

  • ClassPass literally the same product and experience for more less money. I haven't seen many studios offering benefits to members beyond, say, a star on the wall that says "MacKaeighla 100" to commemorate a student's 100th class. Are you offering community social events, book clubs, discussion groups, meditation sessions, anything else that's accessible only to members?
  • Availability is usually the same. You have the ability to restrict ClassPass to a certain number of spots per class, or only allow it for certain, unpopular classes. You can choose to only allow one or two ClassPass slots for popular times. If I'm struggling to get students for a random noon or 3 p.m. class, that might be a reason to open it up further. Yes, that means those popular classes will be less full, and that means it will be a better experience for your members, giving them less reason to cancel their memberships.
  • Studio policies are often the same. Your studio members should have a 2-4 hour cancellation policy, versus 12 hours with ClassPass. If it's a busy workday, for example, members should have flexibility for cancellations a few hours in advance.
  • ClassPass is cheaper per class for booking the exact same class. Studios, let's say you make $10 off a ClassPass booking, where the student is paying equivalent of $15. (Just an example.) Wouldn't it be better for you to get that $15 directly, rather than charging $30-40 for drop-ins?
  • ClassPass lets you roll over unused credits. I see studios offering memberships where you're committed to 4 or 8 or however many classes per month. I've tried this model and found it super stressful. There's never a month where I know in advance that I want to take a specific number of classes. Sometimes I want more, sometimes I get busy or have to travel and want fewer classes. If you're offering memberships like these, you should allow unused credits to roll over for a month, just as ClassPass does.
  • ClassPass is more flexible if you go to multiple studios or travel a lot; you're not committed to the scheduling and whims of a boutique yoga studio owner. This ties back to the question of pricing. You should be offering class packs with long expiration dates and prices that are competitive with ClassPass. Let's say it costs the student $15 per class with ClassPass, and you're getting $10 off each of those classes. Then you should (at least periodically) offer a 20-class pack that comes out to $15-20/per class with more flexibility than ClassPass, and give students SOME reason to choose to pay slightly more to buy direct (see above). You could also offer travel memberships for unlimited classes for a week, or something of that nature.

I have in the past been a member of a studio if they were offering a competitive rate for unlimited memberships (cheaper than ClassPass), or if they had flash sales on multi-class cards with more flexibility to book and cancel compared to ClassPass.

Studio owners, I'm curious to hear which of these things you've actually tried, or if there are other things you've tried that have worked.

Knee pads

I need more comfort for my knees and was looking at getting knee pads for class but felt kinda weird as the thought of using them and being out of place. I know I can get a thicker mat but I love the one I’m currently using so its pads. I think mainly for child’s pose, it’s uncomfortable. Thoughts?

Why Are So Many Yoga Studios Closing? Please Stop Using ClassPass

1.2k Upvotes

I opened our independent, yoga-only studio 21 years ago. We built something beautiful over those years. A thriving community of students, teachers, and friendships that extended far beyond the yoga mat. I recently sold the studio, and looking back, I can honestly say that one of the worst business decisions I ever made was allowing ClassPass through our doors.

Let me explain why.

ClassPass sells studios on a simple concept: Let us fill your empty spots, and we’ll bring you new customers at no additional marketing cost. Sounds wonderful, right?

Unfortunately, over time, that relationship became incredibly destructive to everything we had worked so hard to build.

Under ClassPass’s trial program, we weren’t compensated for qualifying first visits. After that, our payouts were often significantly lower than what students paid when booking directly. Meanwhile, ClassPass has no investment in our rent, insurance, utilities, teacher salaries, equipment, maintenance, or the countless other expenses involved in operating a yoga studio.

They collect their share while we carry all the financial risk.

Even worse, in our experience, ClassPass didn’t provide us with the basic customer contact information we needed. If a teacher got sick, a class was canceled, or we needed to communicate an important last-minute change, we couldn’t directly contact those students.

But the financial damage is only part of the story.

The real damage is what happens to the community.

Yoga studios were never intended to operate like discount fitness vending machines. For decades, students joined studios because they connected with the teachers, the philosophy, and one another. They became members. They supported their teachers. They developed friendships. They helped create something meaningful.
In my experience, ClassPass gradually changed that relationship into a transaction.

Why would someone purchase a studio membership when they can attend the same classes for significantly less through a third party?

Over time, students become accustomed to discounted access while expecting the same level of service, facilities, and instruction that our loyal members help pay for.

And because ClassPass encourages people to move freely between studios, there is less incentive to develop the loyalty and personal connection that once sustained neighborhood yoga communities.

Certainly, there are wonderful ClassPass students. But the platform itself encourages a completely different relationship with the studio. I watched that sense of loyalty slowly disappear, and it was heartbreaking.

Just this past week, our studio received a one-star review from a ClassPass customer who arrived 15 minutes late and was upset that we wouldn’t allow her into class. Our ClassPass listing clearly explains that students should arrive 15 minutes early and that late arrivals are not permitted out of respect for students already practicing.

Imagine teaching a peaceful yoga class and having someone walk in 15 minutes after it begins, disrupting everyone who arrived on time. Yet somehow, we’re the bad guys for protecting the experience.

I understand that ClassPass makes yoga more affordable and accessible, and I appreciate why students use it. I’m not blaming people for looking for a good deal. But I wish more people understood the long-term consequences for the independent studios they love.

After 21 years, I’ve seen the incredible difference a genuine yoga community can make in people’s lives. I’ve also watched the economics of running a small studio become increasingly difficult.

I made plenty of mistakes over those years. I take responsibility for them. But inviting ClassPass into our community was perhaps the most costly.

It happened gradually. A few discounted visits here, a few lost memberships there. By the time you recognize what’s happening, you’ve helped train your own customers to purchase your services through a middleman who controls the relationship and takes a portion of the revenue.

If you love your local yoga studio, please support it directly.

Buy a class package. Become a member. Pay the studio instead of the middleman. Tell your friends. Help keep those independent businesses alive.

Because once your neighborhood yoga studio closes, that community doesn’t simply appear somewhere else.

These are my personal observations and opinions based on 21 years of operating an independent yoga studio. I don’t pretend to speak for every studio owner, but I do hope my experience helps others avoid the same mistakes.

And to the other studio owners out there, I’m curious: Has ClassPass helped your business, or have you experienced the same slow erosion of memberships and community that we did?

Pain everywhere

So I've done yoga this year, starting last October, and it made my pain worse. My arms and legs are so tense, my knees and elbows hurt and I've did it not on my own but in a class with a nice teacher plus with an app. I feel like I I did to much strength yoga and not enough stretching? What am I doing wrong?

Any ideas?

Deepening my practice- favorite online courses?

Hi all! I've practiced on and off for a few years. Occasionally I will find a good schedule with my local studio, but there are times where my practice is all solo- at home or in the sauna. I'm wanting to dedicate the next year or so to deepening my practice + improving my skills. Do you have a favorite online course or youtuber? I LOVE yoga by adrienne & just started a 30 day video series with her, but just wondering what else is out there/what other people love.

Any one willing to learn yoga with me?

I am going to be following a 21 day yoga routine i have found on youtube. Is there anyone who is willing to join me in virtually?

We can do it at our own places and just update each other about it and have each other as our accountability and discussion buddies.

Kindly dm if interested.

Edit- Here are the links we sre planning to use English - https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLX1N87NsjNr4b35gkroQVnRg4SJLqDGJV&si=Dn5NggBBvNVKle9q

Hindi- https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLe1px9-uNQToJhrFIBpVsviZMABuLE5x8&si=RFt6JGdHTkZbNWaZ

It is completely self paced. You can do it at your own comfort in your own homes. Not video calls or voice calls required. I'm just looking to connect with people to chat with about how it is going and what challenges we are facing, etc.

So far, a few people have reached out to me after this post, and we have decided to create a discord server. If anyone is interested in coming along, I'll be happy to share the link with you.

Fake Adriene Account on YouTube

I already posted to the Yoga with Adriene subreddit but thought I’d post here to get more attention on the issue. Has anyone else seen this fake Adriene page on YouTube?

Someone took videos from her page and reuploaded them with a film grain effect and AI generated title cards. This is so messed up. I reported it to YouTube already but others should as well. I hope YouTube does something about it.

Yoga/stretch recommendations for pinched glute nerve?

Started going lots of yoga and stretching to fix a herniated disc in lower back. Would do about 2hrs of stretching a day, when I woke up, during lunch, when I got home, and before bed. After 4 weeks my lower back pain is pretty much gone, but now I have that "pins and needles" feeling below my left glute. Nothing except ice and tylenol seem to help. There isnt a way I can sit or sleep that makes the feeling go away.
Any routine, stretches, or even a YT video suggestion would be great, thanks.

Best leggings for thick thighs (not plus size)

I used to love Old Navy for yoga wear. However, a few years ago they changed fabric from cottony-feel to some kind of slippery fabric. It just slides down my legs and bunches at my ankles, with the crotch at mid thigh. I spend all class hitching it up like cheap pantyhose.

I prefer low rise, but I can tolerate mid rise. Are there yoga pants that are comfortable for people with small waist but thick thighs? (I wear a 10 in normal pants but always need the waist taken in a lot) When I search online, it seems like “curvy” is a euphemism for plus-size, which doesn’t help me find what I’m looking for.

No price limit - if it’s good, I’ll budget for it

Burning Karma / Overcoming Addiction

There's a lot of talk on burning karma in yoga and I like to shed my light on it. What this means is transcending the cycles that enslave us, if its a negative habit this is what people call addiction. People these days can be addicted to anything, their phone, other people, certain places and the obvious, everyone has a tendency to get stuck, that's when a habit becomes an addiction. In yoga we say that even healthy habits are to be transcended. When we practice yoga, on one level we are generating a lot of energy, that's why many people feel good right after. To transcend our addictions requires a constant striving in another direction. This is why people often feel stuck, its not easy to generate intense energy.

Future of yoga??

Recently, my favorite yoga studio closed down and it was my sanctuary. Since then, my favorite yoga teacher is also leaving yoga teaching, and is pursuing corporate wellness as her career. I am sad cause I started doing yoga while I was in the midst of a very bad period of my life. Just wondering, where do you see the future of yoga going? More yoga sculpt? Or will more people transition into Pilates?
