News PS5 games are now booting on Xbox hardware thanks to emulation, because apparently anything is possible now

Developper's mode is for free, just need to provide an ID

u/tensuron 6h ago
Problem is Xbox dev mode is limited and capped to 5GB RAM as well as CPU and GPU limits so it’s never going to run better than 10 fps

That would be a good Project helix's selling point. There are rumours about Nintendo switch emulation as well. You can play all games from every console in this machine!!

u/mbxdriver 6h ago
This selling point is only for nerds who monitors the industry. Microsoft cannot promote piracy.

u/dagamer34 27m ago
It’s not really piracy if you own the game. But if you don’t have to buy Sony’s $600-1000 console, you feel much less obligation to only buy games from their store.
If you can buy a few of their exclusives and play on the hardware of your choice, you can get the rest of your games on PC from Steam sales. That’s no bueno for Sony.

u/Precarious3145 21m ago
Dude, if you want to pirate, just pirate. It's so pathetic when people try to create some moral loophole to justify it. No one here gives a fuck if you pirate.

u/tensuron 6h ago
Anyone tech literate enough to pirate and emulate is likely already a PC gamer, and probably hasn’t paid for an Xbox game in years

u/mightylordredbeard 5h ago
I specifically bought a series s for its emulation capabilities in dev mode. It cost me $150 at the time and I wanted a more simple way of playing my emulated games on my tv and the series s was the best option that offered the most value for the things i needed in a backup console for the bed room.

u/ComradeJohnS 6h ago
you had me in the first half, but people who emulate or pirate aren’t always doing it for the crime, it’s a service issue.

Nah pirates pirate literally everything they can, they just want free stuff. Xbox games don’t have Denuvo so they just pirate all of them that they want to play day 1.
There’s no “honor” system where they pay if the service is good and convenient enough, if they can easily get something for free they will. Xbox natively ports their games to PC day 1 with no Denuvo, it doesn’t get easier to pirate than that

u/Iamrubberman 1h ago
That’s categorically not the case. Sure some people will pirate no matter what but largely when the service is accessible and affordable you’ll find the average person will just pay for it rather than go through the perceived hassle of pirating.
When a service is super expensive or it’s a pain in the ass to access the content like movie streaming being split across so many platforms piracy will start to climb as it becomes increasingly an easier solution than the official way

u/MorallySound 2h ago
Being convenient has proven to be a successful business model.
Most of my gamer buddies have pirated games before. At this stage of our lives, we will absolutely just pay for something we want instead of going through the hassle of pirating.

u/Tobimacoss 5h ago
Only Bethesda uses Denuvo, and Activision games are mostly live service multiplayer.
But it's Steam that makes it easy for pirates, if no Denuvo.
-1
u/tensuron 5h ago
Not even Bethesda just ID software.
Starfield and Indiana Jones didn’t have Denuvo, I’m pretty sure DOOM is the only Xbox game ever to use Denuvo

I'll admit I skimmed the article...sounds like it's already being worked on.

No clue why you're being downvoted. Everyone wants Helix to have Steam and emulator support. To me that sounds like they want a PC with the XBOX mode enabled LOL

u/Centillionare 3h ago
Yup, “hmm, this magical machine that emulates games from consoles and has freedom of choice for who you get games from. HEY, stop mentioning PC!”
Too bad PC is too expensive to be a viable option right now. Buying an Xbox is honestly the only reasonable thing left.

People in this thread not reading the fact these games play at sub 10FPS.
Also wild seeing windowcentral and people on here promoting piracy.
18
u/Prestigious-Bluejay 4h ago
It doesn't matter what FPS they boot at. That's how almost all emulators start. Once a game is booted then it's just a matter of time.
6
u/SilentTwo687 4h ago
Only if the machine doing the emulating has enough overhead to emulate at a decent framerate. Powerful PC's handle this much better, for obvious reasons. Xbox Series doesn't have enough overhead to run these games at a solid framerate.

u/NotFromMilkyWay Founder 2h ago
Dev mode only has access to IIRC 2 out of 8 cores and 70 % of the GPU.
1
u/boxsterguy 3h ago
PS5 and Xbox Series X are essentially the same hardware, more or less. This just needs to thunk API calls, not emulate a hardware layer.
-1
u/SRGTBronson 2h ago
We went from 5090 being required for these Playstation 5 games to run down to a 5060 in a week. Give it time.
1
u/GetDunkedOnFool RROD ! 4h ago
That's not true of the system it's being played on can't get any stronger.

u/Stevenstorm505 2h ago
PlayStation starts letting us own our games maybe we’ll give a shit.

Okay champ, guess you're angry at Nintendo and Xbox and steam as well huh?

That incredible, but I wouldn't play Astrobot without the dual sense, the game's literally built around it.

For anyone wondering this emulator won't go any further as Microsoft only allows 5gb of RAM to be used for UWP apps in Dev Mode, which is obviously not enough for a PS5 emulator. Now what would be actually promosing is native recomps of PlayStation games like they did with Bloodborne, that's viable.
-1
u/segagamer Day One - 2013 46m ago
It also means that this emulator will likely be fully playable on Helix though, or more functional for smaller titles. Like that game from that stupid dev who isn't porting to Xbox "cos Palestine" (Big Walk I think?)
1
u/Designer-Cut2344 45m ago
I see no reason to believe that it would run better on Helix
1
u/segagamer Day One - 2013 43m ago
Other than the 5GB limit being raised and extra CPU oomph?
1
u/Designer-Cut2344 42m ago
Why would they remove the very same limit they have no reason to put now
1
u/segagamer Day One - 2013 0m ago
Because the 5GB limit is there for Xbox One compatibility and they have no reason to continue supporting Xbox One by the time Helix releases.

It's PS5 emulator that runs on Xbox Series X. Performance apparently isn't great on Xbox, but on PC the same emulator can run Astro Bot and Demon's Souls at over 60 fps.
It's very much a work in progress. Also, since it's an app, I don't think it has access to all the power that games have access to, which would obviously hamper its development quite a bit. I could be wrong though.

u/gatesphere 7h ago
Under the hood, so to speak, both PS5 and Series X are near-standard x64 computers. No reason it wouldn’t be possible, with a translation layer. Basically the same thing that each respective system’s backwards compatibility layer is doing already to play previous generation games.
4
u/400F 7h ago
The problem is developer mode is very limited. Both series S and X are stuck running the same “virtual machine“ configuration. 5gb of ram and capped performance.
1
u/gatesphere 5h ago
Sure, but no one is saying it’s gonna be _good_, just that it’s possible. For some much lighter games. With meh performance.

Is this what the world has come to? Using Chat GPT to respond to a Reddit post? Humanity is doomed.

IMHO, I think they should focus all of this computing power to curing cancer, and all its forms. It’s the one disease that is guaranteed to touch each and every one of our lives, in one way or another.
2
u/a_talking_face 4h ago
Super computers and AI have been used for years to study cancer.
0
u/KYlaker233 2h ago
Respectfully, those efforts couldn’t compare to what can be done if all of these AI models were focused on it today. There’s already been breakthroughs in cancer research lately that are attributed directly to AI. Those efforts in the past were all just number crunching and using literature made by humans that was already available. Now, we have predictive AI that can generate molecules that have never been seen on earth before. And I don’t get the downvotes? No one had a loved one die from cancer?

They currently already are. Throwing more monkeys at the problem doesn't make it happen faster.

Yeah, I say take all theses data centers and instead of making cat videos, use them in a collective to focus on sicknesses. Don’t see how anyone would/could want anything else. Life is extremely fragile. I’ve lost three loved ones to cancer in the last year and a half, and now a great friend has it. So I’m all in on a cure.
1
u/segagamer Day One - 2013 47m ago
The people prompting the data centers to make a cat video are not the people who would try to figure out curing cancer.
Unfortunately death is a part of life. I've lost direct relatives to cancer also. Best to accept it than wallow in sorrow.

Last I knew the emulation scene in Xbox was functional but it didn't get many updates as the PC counterparts.
I hope we see Switch emulation someday.
