Discussion Xbox Remote Play - Massive Upgrade

I’ve grown to really love handheld gaming over the past couple years. I owned an XAX for a little while, but I often found myself playing smaller indies on it instead of big budget AAA games, mainly because of the 7 inch display. Although they ran impressively well for the most part, I just enjoyed the experience more on my large TV and would stick to indies and work on my backlog via remote play. I actually sold my XAX and Playstation Portal recently and was able to purchase a used base model Xbox Ally and a brand new Switch 2 due to a crazy Costco deal as still have money left over.

I’ve always been a big fan of remote play, but I found the quality on Xbox to always be awful. I would find myself buying games on PlayStation (not my preferred platform) because the remote play experience on the Portal was so superior, until recently.

I’m not sure if it’s available to everyone or just for Xbox insiders, but the improvement to Xbox remote play quality is massive. I tested a bunch of games on it like GTA Vice City, 4, 5, Gears E Day, RE 6, and Hellraiser Revival. The resolution quality and latency was greatly improved it almost felt native.

TLDR: Xbox Remote Play has had a massive quality improvement, just in time for GTA 6. Give it a try on one of your devices! Hopefully the update rolls out to all players soon.

If you're talking about 1440p 30Mbps Remote Play, it's not available to all users yet, unless I'm mistaken. We've been waiting for this for at least a month, since it became available to Alpha Ring Insiders.

Makes sense, that explains why mine still looks the same as before

One thing I wish we could do, remote in from other consoles. I got my one x at treadmill. I’d love to just continue playing a current gen title while I walk.

I’ve never tried this before. How does this work exactly? I just leave my Xbox on standby and then what?

That’s it, then you remote in. The only thing slightly annoying is our living room TV detects input switching automatically so when I boot up remote play and the Xbox wakes up if the wife is watching TV she will have to switch inputs back to the firestick or else she’s just gonna be watching me play Xbox remotely. Doesn’t happen often enough for us to change the input auto detect settings.

Edit: if the TV is off then nothing happens. You can see the Xbox is on though. If the wife turns the TV on and puts it on the Xbox input she could watch whatever I’m playing.

When I remote play my Xbox doesn’t look like it’s on. The light is off on it.

what did you use before the Ally? im just wondering if what youre seeing is hardware related, i used to use a wifi 5 device and i also have an Xbox Ally and it uses 6E internet and i noticed cloud and remote play better.

Remote play via the Xbox app is low quality, but via Edge or Edge Canary with clarity boost enabled looks much better. Hoping they update the Xbox app soon.

Remote play used to be GOATED when it was officially through their Xbox App.

Then they got greedy and wanted purchases to be available through the app, so they had to remove it. It’s a shadow of how it used to be

It actually works? I’ve yet to get remote play to work since it moved from an app.

I use remote play on my laptop and I didn't notice any latency issues at all, felt very clean compared to Sony. Can't even get PS remote play to launch/stay open, it's terrible

I’ve found Xbox Remote play excellent for at least the last few years since Steam Deck was launched. With the XAX is worked pretty flawlessly for me on a daily basis. If it’s getting even better then that’s awesome

I have seen it as well. Thought it was just me. It’s great!

Remote play through the Xbox windows app is massively better.

I gave on the official app a long time and been using XBXPlay on my handheld. I'd be happy if they could match it at the very least so I dont have to use 3rd party software.

Does remote play still oddly use data rather than just staying within your local WiFi? I remember years back it requiring a lot of data usage which definitely kept me from ever really using it.

First they have to fix the issues with connection. I can’t play cause the xbox won’t turn on even though it states that is on standby and ready to play

Do a full restart on your Xbox? Every once in a while I have to do that to fix it. It’s rare but yeah, that fixes it.

That is what I ended up figuring out I have to do, except that I am away and wanted to play while on vacation.
Defeats the purpose of remote play if you have to go and restart your console

I love remote play. My Xbox isn’t even connected to a TV anymore. I just use an Android Handheld with a third party app. Literally no complains from my side.
Native remote play from Xbox has been awful but thanks for your info, I’ll try it again.
