If the leaks are anything to go buy then they penned the deal in late 2024, meaning they signed it a year before the RAMpocalypse started and prices started to balloon. Ad spend was quite a bit higher at that time, which means if there was a dollar amount set between the two then Sony is running ~25% more ads than they thought they would be.
They bid on the marketing rights with the intent to push hardware, not to help sell copies of GTA6, since Take Two has certainly negotiated a 88/12% or better divide for marketplace fees. Sony has so few PS5 Pros to sell that they stripped any mention of that from these trailers. And with multiplayer not launching alongside single player then Sony can't even push PS+ subs with this deal.
That first GTA6 delay devalued this deal substantially.

They have a whole thing where it takes advantage of the ps5’s features, haptic triggers that change resistance with every weapon/action, 3d audio support and basically all the shit that exclusive games typically take advantage of. It uses the ssd in a better way, basically something to do with the read speeds that run faster than typical games, idk I skimmed thru the list.
Multiplatform games generally don’t take advantage of a platform’s special features.
So yeah, the plays better thing is actually true

... but not a single regulator has tried to take them to court for doing exclusivity deals that leverages their current near-monopoly into an even greater snowballing superiority.
And this is a megacorp that already knocked out Nintendo, SEGA and XBOX from doing premium consoles (Nintendo went into low-power ones, SEGA did away with all hardware, XBOX will do bespoke PCs).

The issue for me is Rockstar is the LITERAL last company that should ever want/need to do a exclusive marketing deal with ANY platform. They DO NOT need the money. They are practically guaranteed success. They absolutely will but don't even need to advertise. Not to mention the previous success of past titles. Greed, capitalism is the only reason.

Seriously. If Sony says they’ll cover 25-50% of the marketing costs in return for the ads featuring PlayStation, there’s zero reason for R* not to take that deal. A handful of gamers being upset that the marketing doesn’t feature their platform of choice isn’t a valid reason.
(No one knows the exact terms of the deal, but it doesn’t make a difference)

With a 100m to 30m PS5 to Xbox Series console lead, if every console owner bought one copy of GTA VI, Sony was already guaranteed 77% of GTA VI console sales (100m/130m = .77).
They're just throwing money out the window this generation.

Well, that's just Business 101. They know it still sells well on all the platforms it's available on, so why not make some extra cash while they're at it? If you're a developer and a company like Sony is willing to shell out a pretty penny for marketing rights, that reduces your initial investment in the game and increases your profit margins
. At the end of the day this is hobby is a business for them. So it seems like a no-brainer. Big titles like GTA 6 still need some level of advertising because you're trying to cast the widest net possible to maximize potential customers.

You can still buy the game on xbox and play it the same date as on PS. Sony is paying money hoping some people buy their box, Rockstar gets money and already knows they'll have way more sales on PS than Xbox. It makes sense for both sides. Two parties consensually entering into a marketing agreement is in no way anticompetitive.

Both of these are kind of misleading. Capcom was struggling hard in the mid 2000s
Dead rising 3 was published by Xbox for the Xbox version with capcom publishing the pc version about a year later. Microsoft being the publisher means it would never go to Playstation, especially at the time of release.
Street fighter was still published by capcom but sony funded the project. While not directly publishing it they essentially did the same thing and would never put it on a rival console.
Both of these games only existed because of the exclusive consoles they were on.

Not me. This goes beyond marketing at this point and is becoming political with very obvious anti-consumer bullshit. I applauded MS for putting all platforms available under games they showcase and the reversal is disappointing; they're better than that.
Sony can hang themselves. MS should stay the course they've been on and see this through, sans exclusives. Phil had it right but was handcuffed at times by management. Asha might have the leeway now to see it to fruition.

Eh it's not an exclusive though, Sony just has marketing rights. Xbox and Sony both do this to games they have the marketing rights to. Xbox folded for a brief time in the Xbox showcase after feedback but that only lasted for like one showcase. Now games they have the marketing rights to only have the Xbox logo.
I do think TES will be exclusive, but I don't see this being an issue with what they are doing with GTA6. It's just a case of Sony getting the marketing rights.

It’s probably going to take a while since GTA6 is requiring a mandatory update for the PlayStation 5 to be installed before it can be played meaning that until that update has been jailbroken. PC players won’t be able to pirate the game that being said I don’t think it’s going to take very long until they managed to jailbreak that very update maybe like a few months at most.

Sony had a similar deal for RDR2, that didn’t prevent the game from running in native 4k on the One X (something it did not do on the PS4 Pro).

I dont believe Rockstar would go out to sabotage the game itself, but the evidence is clear there is some games that run betted on PS5 and some run better on Xbox but they will be similar if not the same, whether they add QSSR to the base PS5 or down the line to sharpen the picture quality they should in theory run the same otherwise.

Playstation did have marketing rights for GTA5, and the initial next gen version (PS4/X1)
GTA is also commonly thought of as a Playstation product due to the 3D era trilogy.
So Sony getting the marketing for 6 was probably going to happen, especially since when the deal was likely made Microsoft was in the middle of buying Activision.

Rockstar wants Sony to promote their game which this is probably indicative of, if they included Xbox marketing, Sony may not be as inclined to do a bunch of free marketing on their platform. The Xbox version is going to be perfectly fine, but make no mistake most copies sold will be on PlayStation this year.

And that is why Xbox needs to get competitive again. They need leverage to tell studios that regardless who has marketing rights, they need links to purchase the game on Xbox, showing it is available to play on Xbox. It was pre Xbox One/PS4 era that all consoles where mentioned regardless who had marketing rights. I'm not saying they need to play dirty like Sony, just so they get some leverage to prevent devs agree to not let Sony pull these dirty moves.

First, Sony is paying for marketing rights, and they play dirty.
Removing Xbox there is playing dirty and.. somehow in line with what Sony became in last few months :)
Second, PS5 and XSX will play the same version, probably no difference, maybe a little bit more stable on XSX due to more power. Pro will offer a little more resolution and better grass. Nothing more.
All are 30 fps.
All digital only.
That’s why I pass. I can wait 2 years, they will eventually release disc version. Or at least digital gets discounted.
I won’t pay R* greedy bastards too much.
