Locking this post due to people derailing this post thread with political rants. This is an Xbox gaming subreddit. If you want to discuss the politics of Israel/Gaza or other issues unrelated to Xbox and Digital Games, then go to r/politics and leave this sub out of this.

Good, the more digital rights the better.

Agreed. We also need this for all digital media (movies, tv shows, etc).

(If that’s already in the proposal- great, I did not read the article)

It’s never gonna happen because of tech companies and gaming industry influence but it should have happened years ago.

Paying a company $70 to read a 20 page EULA you’re forced to accept that says you don’t own the game at all please fuck yourself (no refunds if you don’t like it bitch) should have been illegal 15 years ago.

Don't forget the worst part, they can change those ToS any time they want and if your choices are "agree or stop using the product, no we won't refund you if you don't want to agree to us changing the terms."

If you’re a tech company that’s the BEST part.

“Also we can delist this and revoke it from your library whenever we want. We mostly have just done it with the movies you bought but we can do it to games too just watch” -Sony

They didn’t take the movies away though the owners did.

Until that actually happens with a non mmo game that somebody paid money for, I'm gonna need people to stop leaning on that.

It has happened for several games released on Xbox actually.

That's not even an exhaustive list either. MvC2, The Simpsons Arcade, and Scott Pilgrim vs The World were three that I personally lost all access to. Thankfully, two of them have been re-released. Still hoping Konami and Disney sort something out for a Simpson re-release.

There's no way this passes, unfortunately. This would just be another reason they'd try to fast track cloud streaming only.

The battle for physical media is a waste of time, this is where our energy needs to go.

11

u/antilumin 1d ago

Right? The main draw of physical is that “I own the disc” but that’s all you ever own. You don’t own the game. If that disc is scratched you’re fucked.

At least if there was an actual digital ownership and not this “licensing” nonsense then it wouldn’t be any issue.

8

u/AngelosOne 1d ago

Not just that, but the disc needs something to play it - eventually they will stop making the hardware to read the disc and your players wears out then what? At least with proper digital ownership, the hardware becomes least of an issue.

Licensing isn’t nonsense that’s how an ip holder keeps the rights. If you own a digital copy and not just a license there would be nothing to stop you from making copies and selling it

This is going to happen more and more. More governments are going to start introducing legislation around digital ownership.

For a while, I feel most companies have tried to act in good faith. They may have wanted to avoid the mess of new laws and government interference.

However a few recently (Ubisoft) have not. They crossed a line, necessitating measures like this. It was a very, very dumb line for them to cross.

Just like Europe's attempt, this will go nowhere.

Good, that's about the only way I'll go completely digital to help the environment more.

There is no zero chance this passes. This thread will be filled with comments about how this needs to happen but those people live in a should world and not an is world.

Almost no republican is going to vote for this and lots of dems wont either. Publishers will argue that enacting such a thing would place undue financial burden on them. Whether you believe that or care aint important.

The fact is the U.S government typically tries to avoid doing things that businesses claim will cost them lots of money, Again, whether you think they should concede to business like that aint important, the fact is they do.

I doubt this makes it out of committee.
