Charity What to do about those annoying anti-abortion protests?

Post image
368 Upvotes

I've seen a few posts on r/winnipeg over the years about anti-abortion protesters in various parts of the city and I know most of you take a pretty dim view of them. It might be fun to go yell at those weirdos when you spot them, but how can we help make sure that people who need abortions can get them?

I play in the Feminist AF marching band, which was formed in 2018 to counter-protest these losers. Every fall for the last few years, we've been encouraging our supporters to donate to an abortion travel fund run by Action Canada for Sexual Health and Rights. They reimburse people for out-of-pocket expenses related to abortion care to help improve abortion access in Canada.

We made a video of ourselves crashing a forced-birther protest near the Health Sciences Centre earlier this month and just recently posted it on our Facebook and Instagram pages. Look it up to find out how you can donate, or even just boost the posts by liking, sharing, and commenting!

Our band is always welcoming new members, so if you play an instrument -- no matter how poorly -- feel free to get in touch! We have a huge range of skill levels in the band, from professional musicians to absolute beginners. We rarely practice and we definitely value spectacle over musical cohesion, but we have a lot of fun. In addition to annoying the forced-birthers, we also play a lot of rural Pride parades, protests, picket lines, and other community events.

It’s worth noting, it’s not just the Winnipeg Jazz Festival. TD has sponsored Jazz festivals across Canada for years and they’ve pulled their sponsorship from all festivals. Still, this is a big loss of funding for the Winnipeg Jazz Festival.

News Pile of dead Canada geese discovered near Garson, Man.

Manitoba Conservation says it's investigating after a man operating a grader discovered a pile of dead Canada geese in a ditch just north of Garson, Man., on Friday morning.

Scott Peluk works as a grader operator for the RM of Brokenhead. He says he was blading the road near Mile 33 Road just north of Garson, when he saw about "15 to 20" geese carcasses.

"I look to my right hand side, I'm looking, 'oh, OK, Whole bunch of carcasses of geese,' and it's not that somebody gutted them, you know, like took the meat or anything — it was whole bodies of the geese," Peluk said.

"That's not right," he said.

Peluk says he didn't get out of his grater to see them up close, but says he says he noticed a few of them with "blood spots" on them.

At this point it's unconfirmed if the geese were shot, but Peluk suspects that if so, someone may have gone over the number of geese that hunters are legally allowed to harvest in a single day.

"I'm kind of guessing that because there's a limit, so I'm probably thinking they 'uh, we're way over, so let's just dispose of these because we don't want to get a fine,'" said Peluk.

According to Manitoba's 2026 hunting guide, within the province's game bird hunting zones, licensed hunters are allowed to harvest eight Canada geese in a single day, and to have 24 in their possession.

Having lived his whole life in the country, Peluk says it's foul play to waste meat. That's why he took a photo of the carcasses and posted it to social media.

"I just hope that these people get caught or smarten up and not do something like that anymore," he said.

"It's just not right wasting that — like if you want to already, if you're going to shoot them all, give them meat to somebody else, like people that can use it because food is expensive nowadays, right?"

"You got to take everything you can and freeze it."

Peluk says Manitoba Conservation has picked up the carcasses.

In an email to CBC News, Manitoba Conservation says it's aware of the incident and is currently investigating.

Ask Winnipeg Winter question for a first year winnipegger

For some context I'm from East Africa so I've never experienced winter back home and when in France it was not as cold. Do I really need winter boots for the winter. Ive gotten mixed answers on it, some people say wear Uggs you'll be fine others are saying dont wear Uggs you'll ruin them. Others are saying my normal runners are good enough, I just want a straight answer lol before boots become expensive.

Any answer will help, also id really love recommendations for boots (if they're actually needed).

Charity Long-distance donations keep shelves stocked — Salvation Army calls on Winnipeggers to donate merchandise as sales soar

The Salvation Army is taking donated merchandise from other regions to stock its Winnipeg thrift stores as increasing sales outpace local donations.

Retail activity at the charity’s eight Winnipeg locations grew more than 10 per cent year over year during several months, from January through April, and again in June.

Although local donations remain strong, they haven’t kept pace with demand, prompting the organization to supplement inventory with merchandise from elsewhere.

Ted Troughton, managing director of the Salvation Army’s thrift store operations, said rising living costs are bringing in new customers.

“I think people are looking for ways to make their dollar go further,” Troughton said.

The organization encourages Winnipeggers to donate clothing and household goods ahead of winter, when donations slow down, making stocking stores more challenging.

January is the slowest month for Salvation Army sales, although the organization continues to see demand for goods throughout winter.

Winter clothing, including jackets, sweaters, boots, mittens and hats, is needed, along with household items such as cookware, small appliances and home decor.

Troughton said the Salvation Army prefers to keep shelves filled with locally donated goods but can transfer surplus merchandise between regions when needed.

“The ideal situation is a market sustains itself,” he said, adding moving goods between cities adds transportation expenses.

The Salvation Army declined to disclose how much inventory has been transferred into Winnipeg, where it originated from or how much the transfers cost. The organization said the challenge is the volume of donations rather than the quality of items received.

Troughton said demand for domestic items has grown as shoppers look for less expensive alternatives to buying new.

He noted online resale platforms such as Facebook Marketplace affect donations as some people choose to sell rather than give belongings away.

Cheap popular low-quality fast fashion also affects the secondhand market, he said, because some garments may not withstand repeated use and resale.

Other thrift store operators in Winnipeg report mixed experiences with sales and donations.

At Just Like New to You, an independent, volunteer-run thrift store at 685 Portage Ave., sales increased 34 per cent, although customer traffic remains steady.

President Susan Lockhart attributes the increase to the introduction of a debit machine. Her store previously accepted only cash.

She said the shop has regular customers and hasn’t experienced an increase in foot traffic.

Unlike the Salvation Army, Just Like New to You has maintained a strong supply of donations, which Lockhart credits to social media.

The store, which raises money for patient-care initiatives at Health Sciences Centre, tries to keep prices low and find new homes for as many items as possible.

Mennonite Central Committee Manitoba, which supports 16 independently governed affiliated thrift shops across the province, also reported a modest increase in sales per square foot during its recent reporting period.

Josue Figueroa, who oversees the network of MCC thrift shops, said affordability is one reason people shop secondhand, but it isn’t the only factor.

Thrifting is increasingly popular among younger shoppers, he said, with customers also motivated by environmental concerns, the appeal of vintage merchandise and the opportunity to find unique items.

Figueroa said increased sales don’t necessarily mean more people are shopping at thrift stores, since changes in prices or customer spending can also affect revenue.

Donation levels vary between communities, seasons and individual shops, he said.

At Just Like New to You, Lockhart said donated items not suitable for sale can still help people in immediate need. Her store sometimes distributes those clothes to people experiencing homelessness.

News Manitoba Hydro spending up to $1.2B to upgrade electrical substations in Winnipeg, Brandon

Thumbnail

Manitoba Hydro is undertaking a massive project to replace or upgrade dozens of electrical substations, and it could come with a billion-dollar price tag.

"The overall cost is still being worked on, but it would be between $600 million and about $1.2 billion," said Hydro spokesperson Peter Chura.

Some of the equipment in the substations dates back to the 1960s, "so getting this work done ensures the safety and reliability of the electrical system," he said at a Friday news conference.

The work is expected to be done over the next 15-20 years. It will involve 41 substations in Winnipeg and one in Brandon.

In many cases, "we also have to replace all of the poles, power lines, transformers and other electrical equipment in the neighbourhood served by that substation," Chura said, standing near work being done to the Berry Street station in Winnipeg.

The Berry station is being decommissioned. About 320 poles linked to it are in the process of being replaced to make them compatible with the "more modern" substation a few blocks away on Madison Street, he said.

Not far away, the Notre Dame station will be decommissioned as well. That work is just getting started and will take about three years. It involves about 600 poles and 25 kilometres of power line that need to be swapped out, Chura said.

An electrical substation steps down high-voltage electricity from transmission lines to lower, safer voltage levels so it can be distributed to homes and businesses.

There are about 100 substations across Winnipeg. The 41 included in the renewal plan are "the ones that need to be updated because they're aging," Chura said.

Details about the work are on Manitoba Hydro's website. Each active project will have its own page with updates.

The work could result in temporary power outages for a few hours at a time, but customers will get advance notice, Chura said.

It could also mean some road closures, "so we appreciate customers' patience with that, in understanding that the end result is a more reliable electrical system," he said.

Storms this past summer resulted in multiple lengthy outages around Winnipeg. The new Hydro infrastructure will withstand damage a bit better and be less complicated to repair, Chura said.

Still, when a tree falls on a line, "it's probably going to result in damage and probably a power outage no matter what," he said.

Tony Ament, who lives in the city's Woodhaven area, said he's been experiencing more power outages in recent years.

"In the last month or even two months, I've had … more power outages than I've had in the last five years or more, and they vary in length from from minutes to half a day," he said.

He was pleased to hear Hydro is addressing parts of its aging system.

"I know it's costly, but it has to be done. It sounds like a big number, but then maybe that's the way it is these days," said Ament.

"I'm always happy when I hear that they're upgrading and improving facilities and infrastructure. Considering I'm experiencing the short-term power outages now anyway, I guess I would put up with it [while they're doing the work]."

Ask Winnipeg Where can I donate men’s dress clothes that isn’t Value Village?

I have a bunch of men’s dress shirts and a few suit jackets that no longer fit me (can I still blame COVID for the weight gain?).

Everything is in good shape, and I’d really like to donate them somewhere they’ll go directly to people who could use them for work or job interviews.

I still remember starting out in my career and being stressed at how expensive dress shirts and other professional clothes were. I’d much rather pass these along to someone who could use them than have them sit in my closet.

Ideally, I’d like to avoid just jamming everything into a Value Village bin, where it’ll end up being resold.

Does anyone know of organizations in Winnipeg that accept men’s dress clothes and distribute them directly to people who need them?

The accident that happened in 2023 is literally impossible with this design, and the roundabouts on PTH-5 will be made large enough for trucks and farm machinery.

There's no conflict points on the main TCH-1, like the RCUT proposal had.

Tourism Coming for short visit- what should we not miss?

Husband and I are heading to the Jets game on Nov 5. We plan to stay at the Inn at Forks and walk to stadium. We arrive midday Wed and leave town midday Fri. We are thinking we don't need a car, just uber, is that reasonable? Are taxis better or would you recommend a rental car? Sounds like the Forks market will give us a great place to meet the locals and enjoy your food. What else should we plan? We have read about the human rights museum, but we aren't huge museum people. But if it's truly a must see, then I will sway him. What would you tell your friends not to miss? Thanks for any feedback!

Politics What Questions Would You Ask if You Were Running the Upcoming Mayoral Debate?

Post image
4 Upvotes

The upcoming mayoral candidate debate, hosted by CBC Manitoba, is happening on October 21. What question(s) would you ask, if you could? At this time, only 3 mayoral candidates have been invited: Gillingham, Klein, and Vogiatzakis.

Your questions may be more general and for all candidates, or you may have specific questions for specific mayoral candidates.

Ask Winnipeg Dog groomers

Looking for recommendations of a groomer/s that will have patience with a large breed puppy, who really doesn’t like their nails cut, getting blow dried or getting brushed. But has done fine with baths at home with us. I’m wanting to take my 8 month old in for a full grooming. Also, I am wondering if even though my dog doesn’t show signs of being aggressive, would it be good to muzzle them just incase due to the fact they don’t like those things? I can sit here and say my dog isn’t aggressive all day, but they’re dogs and unpredictable. I know she’s turned and bit the brush when I brush her, never any of us though. Just think it might be a good added precaution?

Thank you!
