Tip PSA: You can still download official, legit Windows 7 ISOs from Microsoft Servers.

I was just as shocked as you are.

Instructions:

  1. Copy the JS bookmarklet from this GitHub Gist page (credit here goes to bmsimons on GitHub!): https://gist.github.com/bmsimons/f2bc1db9d4bd1e46383ae16714e1d318
  2. Navigate to: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
  3. For Chrome users: Inspect anywhere on the page, click the three dots in the upper right, More Tools > Network Conditions. Uncheck use default user agent, and select BlackBerry BB10. DON'T close the inspect pane, and click reload to apply to user agent changes. For Firefox users: Press Ctrl+Shift+M to open Responsive design mode, then press the up/down arrow button to the right of the user agent string input box, and select Firefox Mobile. Reload the page. Right-click and inspect anywhere on the page and continue as follows.
  4. Select "Console" in the upper bar of the inspect pane, type "allow pasting" (no quotes), and press Enter. Then paste the bookmarklet you copied and press Enter.
  5. You can now close the Inspect pane. Select the Windows 7 ISO of your choice, and continue through the following drop down options as you would for a Windows 10 ISO to receive the download links in the end. I did confirm these work. For example, I've attached a picture of me receiving a Windows 7 Starter download link, as well as a picture of a mounted x86 SP1 Win7 Pro ISO I downloaded to confirm they were actual Windows 7 ISOs.

All ISOs come from the official software.download.prss.microsoft.com server. This method also likely works for Windows 8.1 ISO downloads as well.

UPDATE: You can also download Office 2007, 2010, older Windows 10 builds and more using my modified bookmarklet here, many thanks to ppisarczyk on GitHub for the TechBench dump. + Thanks to u/PlaneSheepherder1206 for the GitHub tutorial here!

Discussion My early 2010's Windows 7 build

Back in 2011/ 2012 this was my dream PC.

i5 2500k at 4.5ghz w/ Hyper 212 Evo

Corsair XMS3 2x4gb ddr3 1600mhz

Msi g45 z77 (I eventually got this same exact board later with a 3570k)

Sapphire HD 6950 1gb.

Case is NOS of the Antec 302 that I managed to get a year ago from Walmart.

Overall impressions: Performance is amazing period accurate games, Crysis can run at max setttings at full 1080p. I might swap out the 6950 for a r9 280x or a Gtx 770, maybe even a GTX 970.

Help Retro build upgrading in today's prices. . Advice?

I had:

Intel 08 I5-750 5LBLC MALAY 2.66 GH/8M/09B L945B502 1st gen

Reg Model: D03M Reg Type: D03M001

Power supply: 350 W Chicony Model CPB09-001B

8 GB Ram 64 bit

HDD Seagate Barracuda 1000GB SATA cord

ATI Radeon HD 5770

Graphics card died so I upgraded it to:

evga gtx 750 ti ftw

Also upgraded the power supply to compensate.

Now my HDD is dying so I need to replace the hard drive. I wanted to do SSD but I look at these prices and not sure what to do. I use this computer to do retro gaming, windows 7 era games.

I'm okay even staying at 1TB after seeing these prices but what should I do in this situation not sure if should buy new or used or what model. Never purchased a hard drive before

Help Corrupt Steam downloads

I've been slowly working on setting up my 2011 gaming laptop as a Win7Ult machine

In case it matters the specs are as follows:

i7 2630QM

16gbs DDR3

GTX 560M 3gb

128gb SSD + 750GB HDD

I've put a suitable browser on it, installed Steam and discord and it's essentially a perfectly usable experience minus a couple issues I've run into and I'm wondering if any of you stubborn Win7 users like myself have any solutions

  1. Some Steam downloads are getting stuck at 98% download then corrupting (example: Witcher 3 classic and Splinter Cell blacklist)

  2. When joining discord voice calls it loops between Authenticating and Disconnected

What work arounds do you guys have if any?

Edit: to add since I posted this I'm also having trouble with downloads in general now it seems including Steamworks Common Redistributables and also now "Content Servers Unreachable"

I also tried to launch a game that previously worked (Metro 2033 Redux) and it wanted to do a small download of some kind and said I was missing a file.

I've recently got this windows 7 era pc, and so I tried to recreate a Windows installation that was as close as possible to the OEM version, since there are no recovery images available online for this pc. I'd love some advice on which apps and games I should install and whether I should change anything! :)

Help Cloudflare never ending verification...

Total novice here, using windows 7 and the last version of chrome I can, whenever I go to a site that uses Cloudflare it just goes into a never ending verification loop and I can't get on the site, I've tried Supermium too and that's the same, the only browser that works is Firefox but I hate using that as it's excruciatingly slow, can anyone tell a novice like me how to sort this? Thank you in advance!

Help Updated Legacy Update on W7 to 1.14.1, how do I verify that the eMudhra certificate issue is also resolved?

I ran an update for Legacy Update on Windows 7 so it'll be on version 1.14.1 and take care of the eMudhra certificate issue. The problem is I'm not sure if the update fully went through or not, and I wanted to know how I can properly verify this?

During the update, I had Malwarebytes notify me of it blocking 'Exploit.VBScriptExecution' right as Internet Explorer opened up to the Legacy Update page. Control Panel says Legacy Update is now on version 1.14.1, but I have no idea if it took care of the certificate issue too or if Malwarebytes blocked something it shouldn't and this update failed. How do I know for sure?

Tip Win7 for Thunderbird and Shotcut

Some enthusiasts are creating compatibility layers for Win7 for modern software - Thanks !!!
Tried out r3dfox browser the other - pretty damn good.
I use Thunderbird but ... it's a legacy version. Anyone planning to reroute Win7 into it ?
Same with Shotcut, using a legacy version - awesome software but anyone planning to develop a compatibilty layer?
Cheers

Hello good people! My god what a pain in the a** to make win7 running on am5 platform lol i lost hours and hours to find prebuild iso that actually works and not BSOD when installing... and setting all crap mbr - legacy inside bios and all other options i had to set (i forgot), then finding drivers... but finally i have my love my windows 7 ^_^ running great no problem so far, expect 2 usb ports on back not working because missing drivers and sometimes i have to restart dwm if i notice small lags when switching from monitor to monitor... also i have it with dual boot windows 10 for games so am not missing anything... people on win 10 does not know how cristal clear is windows 7... lol even on youtube videos looks much better on windows 7 then on windows 10... idk why microsoft f up something... but graphics on windows 10 are different like have some filter over screen like small blur i can't describe it... and am not only one, even gemmini agree with me.

If anybody needs help installing windows 7 on new machine, you can dm and i will dig where i got iso and drivers... and how to set dual boot (if you want 10 or 11) so when you power your pc you can chose which OS to start.

EDIT: For people asking: i found out i download win7 from this: https://archive.org/details/windows-7_20230629 it is prebuild with usb 3.0 drivers then for moderboard chipset and drivers i used this: https://www.mediafire.com/file/cwfpkq39k4prsix/AMD_Ryzen_Drivers_S13_Win7_64_SHA256_RE.7z/file more info: https://winraid.level1techs.com/t/problem-win7-drivers-for-new-amd-usb-3-x-controllers/33603

I had many problems and i have installed it on sata ssd! don't know will on actually m2 ssd work... for dual boot setup: First i make 2 partitions on my sata ssd (one for win 10 and one for win 7) i set to be MBR (not GPT) because windows 7 only support legacy mode to my knowelage... then i set in BIOS to be in legacy mode and installed windows 10 normally on one partition... then started installing win 7 on another... then problem started i had to turn off 1. Secure Boot: Set to Disabled 2. CSM (Compatibility Support Module) / Legacy BIOS: Set to Enabled 3. make sure SATA Mode: Set to AHCI... then after passing 1 installation, 2 second... on 3 restart i had to put my computer name then realized even with (usb 3.0 drivers inside iso) my mouse and keyboard was not moving at all - not working in any usb port (maybe i forgot to turn on "usb legacy support" if that option even exist)... in luck i had ps2 old keyboard and mouse port on my motherboard and i use some old a** ps2 mouse to open on screen keyboard and type name of pc and finally i got inside system... Now second problem because windows keeps replacing some drivers "acpi.sys" idk what is for can't remmeber... i had to get inside my windows 10 and manually replace with cmd commands files inside windows 7 partition because were locked... (you can do like me or maybe get some other way linux or something) after i done that my mouse and keyboards started working and after that was easy... i got inside device manager and all yellow question mark i got update with files from that link i put up here "AMD Ryzen Drivers s13..." this is 80% i remmber, you will get through it if you consistent... for every problem you get you can ask gemmini how to bypass... AI hellped me so much in this process!

Discussion Is Windows 7 more stable than Vista?

So I posted couple weeks ago about a HP PC with 2 monitors I bought.

I recently upgraded CPU/Ram and GPU.

I tried windows vista for nostalgia, but windows 7 almost the same overall.

-
Specs:

Phenom X6 1065t

GTX 960 4GB

4x 4GB DDR3 sticks

-
I wanted to use vista on it, but Vista is a bit of a mixed bag.

Has no SSD trim support and a bit buggy at times.

H.265 encoding doesn't work right, does work on 7.

-

Should I stick with windows 7 for reliability?

I've had some issues with Vista crashing a lot.

Thinking of using a Vista theme, since I do like the Vista UI.

Help Found my Brothers 2010 Gateway and need help reinstalling windows 7 Home premium

Thumbnail gallery
14 Upvotes

Hello all,

I found my brothers 2010 Gateway PEW91 laptop and would like to Reinstall Windows 7 Home Prem Oa since it originally came with it and i have added an 120gb patriot ssd to it since the hdd is clicking and wanting to terminate itself.

Also, any driver links would be welcomed as well.

Could someone please help me with the procedure and explain to me what legacy update is, do I need it, and how to install it since I see a lot of youtube videos talking about it.

Also, later I want to refurbish and mod it with a compatible Packardbell Easynote series motherboard since it has a dedicated gpu and similar ports as mine, and if anyone has any recommendations it is welcome. (BTW it is an Gateway PEW91 or NV55C38u) Plus more ram, battery, hinges, etc.

I like Windows 7's taskbar but I also like the colors and branding of Windows Vista. If I only could make the command bar teal, instead of the original frost blue.

Update Is there a trustworthy place to get Win7 updates?

I'm doing a clean win 7 install on a 2010 Mac mini to use as a retro game machine. Is there a list of available updates, and a safe place to download them?

I'm a mac guy so I'm always bad with the windows stuff. I know (or I guess, assume) that windows update isn't going to work at all on Win 7?

So i recently heard the news that Microsoft will change the windows update server certificate next year so any un-updated system won't be able to download and install windows updates from the server will this affect all fresh install of windows 7 sp1 with the update patch needing manual update installation or will it be like normal
