Far to the west, across the sea, there is a place called Vinland. It is warm and fertile, far from slavery and the fires of war. No one can reach you there.

- I have no enemies because I hold no ill will to anyone no matter how badly im mistreated?
- I have no enemies because I have the self sovereignty to cut harmful people out of my life, and no one in my life right now is harming me?

As a wise man once said "if you have no enemies you are blind, ignorant or both."
- I don't think anyone actually said this 1842

Actual people has enemies?

I mean, some people decide that you're theirs and there's no real way to opt out other than to just ignore it and protect yourself and move on.

Y'know not much longer in the story he's presented as delusional for saying this.
1
u/R4msesII 2d ago
Is he though?

u/BreadfruitBig7950 2d ago
his sister calls him delusional, and the fact that he's hanging around the village letting little kids beat him up endlessly only proves it.
the fact is he has nothing, so he's forming contentment with it. he's making a delusion out of something he doesn't like.

From what I remember it doesn’t take that long for him to travel to Constantinople to make money and make a reality of his ideals. Its not like he just stays in Iceland forever
1
u/BreadfruitBig7950 2d ago
So the entire process of him grappling with the fact his beliefs are delusional and stupid, and that he lived a decade following a delusion, doesn't factor in at all to you.
1
u/R4msesII 2d ago
Which belief are you calling stupid, the revenge thing or the non-violence thing, since the non-violence thing is kind of the whole theme

If you want it to stay that way then do yourself a favor and don't have children with a demanding women.

I like the vibe. But a person without an enemy is without a cause to rally against.
There’s too much injustice in the world to be a fence sitter.

u/R4msesII 2d ago
I mean he does go on to make a lot people who would consider themselves his enemies for his views on the world, he just doesn’t want to harm them

Nobody has no enemies, lest you become a footstool.

u/R4msesII 3d ago
Did you watch/read Vinland Saga?
Besides a regular day to day person who isnt in a war or something shouldnt have enemies lol, that’s straight up not normal behavior
-1
u/Prince-Angel-Wing 3d ago
It's not normal to not have enemies. We are at constant war with ourselves, as is human nature.
7
u/R4msesII 3d ago
I don’t think it is healthy to consider yourself an enemy either

u/Prince-Angel-Wing 3d ago edited 3d ago
I'd be lying if I didn't, and lying to yourself would be even more unhealthy.

u/771100 3d ago
Turning being at constant war with yourself into a projected generalization, trying to use normativity to corroborate it, then choosing to make it fundamental to your reality is a mistake on many levels. It would be a lie to say you are certain about what you cannot know. You can’t know whether it is or isn’t possible, especially from your position, so why not open your possibilities by even one degree of freedom?

You're ignoring reality. You're using normalcy as an excuse instead of a point. I do know, and you're wasting your time trying to correct what you already have wrong. Freedom is realizing my statement is correct, and my friends realize this same reality.

u/771100 3d ago
Where am I using normalcy? How do you know your truth? How is it different from what and how they know? What if their friends realize their same reality? Degrees of freedom is not the same as freedom.

u/Prince-Angel-Wing 3d ago
It's just truth. Not mine. Not yours. I do not want a "my truth." I'd end myself if I had a "my truth" and whether you want to rephrase what I'm saying to make me look like the bad guy here, it won't change that. If we cannot have one truth, peace is an impossibly. We can have different ideas, but it can still point to that one truth.

u/771100 3d ago
I’m not denying truth, I’m pointing out the possibility that truth is potentially not as one dimensional as you’re framing it. I’m inviting you to consider that truth could be capable of being wider than a survival mindset, not denying that there is in fact a survival mindset.
1
u/Prince-Angel-Wing 3d ago
What happened to "survival of the fittest"? That seems to be the most accepted answer.
2
u/771100 3d ago
I’m not denying it, I’m saying that configuration doesn’t exhaust reality.
