"i appreciate the thought, but some footprints are a lot easier to clean up than your shattered skull from tip toeing on a wet floor"

u/ThatIndianGuy7116 Sep 15 '26
Me remembering when I once tip toed across a freshly mopped floor and did indeed fall and damn near crack my skull
40
u/Healter-Skelter Sep 15 '26
Yeah the guy at my work who mops the floor doesn’t ever seem concerned if I walk over it (necessary) but he will stop me and go “careful!” if he thinks I haven’t noticed the wet floor.

I've probably mopped at least a million sq/ft, just walk by. Someone is going to mess up the floor the second I leave anyway

u/onekrazykat Sep 14 '26
But I don’t want to be that someone!

u/mickeymouse4348 Sep 14 '26 edited Sep 14 '26
As long as you're not deliberately making a mess, you're essentially background noise. The floor will need to be mopped again later regardless. Just go about your day and don't make it weird lol
When I'm the one walking, I'll say something like "I'm sorry to have to walk on your clean floor" and just keep going

u/Grey_Dreamer 28d ago
Ya gonna third this as a school custodian, it's getting mopped again later anyways. I'd rather you not crack your skull slipping on the floor because you're tip toeing instead of focusing on not slipping as another commenter said. Just don't walk on a freshly waxed floor. I've had someone do that after I told them not to and not only did they fall but I had to go and re do the wax. Otherwise there would've been foot prints in it the whole school year that would've trapped all sorts of dirt and grime.

u/mickeymouse4348 28d ago
A freshly waxed floor is a completely different story. I'd make the jackass strip it (not really, but that's what I'd be thinking. I HATE stripping VCT, but laying down wax is weirdly therapeutic)

u/AnytimeInvitation Sep 15 '26
Right? Custodian at a nursing home I worked at just said to walk safely across and just get it over with cuz it was gonna get dirty again soon no matter what we did.
45
u/mickeymouse4348 Sep 15 '26
The thing about commercial cleaning is that once you finish your route, you just go back and start over

u/Nightmare-5 28d ago
That feels so weird but I guess I'll have to accept it.. It sounds so counterintuitive

u/neo_star Sep 14 '26
I always feel guilty doing this at my workplace. But then I'd miss meetings if I don't 🥲

A lot of the time it feels like the janitor's work is more important anyway

u/dasgoodshitinnit Sep 15 '26
Thats why it's called "main"tenence
I just copied the comment from below

u/HomicidalHushPuppy Sep 14 '26
I'm a janitor - i have a coworker who gets pissy about it, the rest of us don't mind. It happens. Like another comment said, we'd rather you walk safely.
42
u/Spadeykins Sep 15 '26
Yeah I mean unless your shoes are covered in mud or shit this is literally the purpose of you doing it on a schedule. It's good that folks want to be polite though I don't want to detract from that.

I never got the guys/gals who get angry, hello the floor is for walking on, be glad ya had the space to even mop it. We do a once its done for the day, its done, do it again tomorrow.

u/HeadOfFloof Sep 14 '26
Hey, speaking as someone who does clean for a living, it's both understood that it's gotta happen, and we still notice and appreciate the people who. Well. Notice and appreciate the work.

u/mrjackspade Sep 15 '26
Yep, I felt better when people tiptoed.
Not because it made it any better, but because they showed that they were both aware of what they were doing, and cared about how it would affect me.
The mother fuckers that came in and walked straight across the wet floor without so much as acknowledging me, pissed me off.
Doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but it's true.
4
u/HeadOfFloof Sep 15 '26
It makes plenty of sense. One group respects the effort put into keeping the space clean, and another clearly doesn't appreciate or notice. Sure, they might have something going on to keep them in a hurry, but even a glance feels better than nothing.
Nothing ground my gears worse than polishing one of those goddamn glass door lobbies, only for a horde of teenagers to go through opening the door by pushing on the glass instead of the handle one minute after I finished.
1
u/Whispering_Wolf 25d ago
Same here. And then there's the fuckers that suddenly need three trips across the same wet floor for no good reason.

Trying to float across the hallway like a ghost

u/CrashCalamity Sep 15 '26
Should I keep my hands to my sides, or A-pose to assert dominance? And what color light should my eyes be emitting?

u/jshuster Sep 16 '26
Blue or yellow if you’re friendly, red if you’re angry, and black if you’re evil!
38
u/bewildered_83 Sep 14 '26
Yeah, and it's always 'sorry for walking on your floor' like they own it, rather than the big corporation they work for. I was a cleaner in a paint factory once, it was my floor once I'd mopped it!

was a janitor and can confirm, i did not give a shit. i was gonna be there same place same time tomorrow

u/Jolly_Jally Sep 14 '26
Me in high school seeing a freshed mopped floor and hugging one side of the hallway while trying to "light step". Our janitors were cool as hell though and always covered for us when late for classes if you knew them well. Except if they knew you were failing a class, they would get on your ass for skipping lmao.

u/superheavyironprimus Sep 14 '26
I'm in elementary school custodian, at the end of the day the goal of it is to make sure at least it gets cleaned at some point. It's a floor, it's going to get used to sooner or later. all that really matters is that the effort was put in to keep it wiped. I can't speak for others but unless you're throwing mud on the floor as a mopping I don't think it's an issue.

u/Dougo01 Sep 15 '26
As Janitor who is literally on the job right now, I can confirm I do appreciate that.

True story from when I was in school
In 9th grade, I had issues with having nosebleeds. I excused myself to use the bathroom because the room didn't have any tissues that I could use to clean up the blood. This was in the cold of winter, of course, when this is naturally going to happen.
While I was on my way, it got profuse enough that it became a small trail of blood while I was walking to the bathroom. I saw the janitor cleaning the floor while I was passing by. I tried to have as apologetic a face as I could while I was passing. He gave me a look that I could only describe as empathetic or understanding.
Whoever he was, I only wish him the best, and I'm sorry that happened. Thankfully, I don't get nosebleeds that often anymore, but I still remember what they were like.

u/FarWrangler1824 Sep 15 '26
As a janitor I sincerely don’t care if you died on my freshly mopped floor just please leave me alone to listen to my podcast, that’s why I picked this job
8
u/ThePsychoKnot Sep 15 '26
There will always be a next person to walk on a floor after it's cleaned. It really makes no difference whether that's 5 minutes or 5 hours after it's been mopped, it will need to be done again at some point regardless
7
u/KeepJoePantsOn Sep 15 '26
Walking on a freshly mopped floor makes it a mess again. It leaves very obvious footprints. You have to wait for it to dry to walk on it.

Guys the second i'm done someone is gonna spill the Linoleum floor stainer 3000 anyway you’ll be fine, i do appreciate the gesture tho.

u/KaptainKunukles Sep 15 '26
Janitor here, if you need to walk through go ahead, I can just mop the spots you walked
2
u/Hornedupone Sep 15 '26
“It’s ok, I don’t mind” No, but I do sir or ma’am. I know what it’s like, and I see you and appreciate you. Sorry for kinda ruining the work you just did.
2
u/CptMop1 Sep 15 '26
Every time I see that I’m about to walk on a floor freshly cleaned I always say “I’m so sorry I don’t mean to cause you more work” because I legit feel bad for mucking up the floor right after they just cleaned 😭
2
u/UF0_T0FU Sep 16 '26
Always notice and thank the cleaning staff. They have a thankless job that never ends.

Literally did that this morning despite the janitor not even being around lol

u/Hermiona1 Sep 15 '26
I wish. Even if my shoes are clean she just shakes her head because I leave small imprints on a wet floor. And for some reason she chooses to mop the floor before everyone walks out. Doesn’t make any sense to me.
1
u/sierra-echo-november Sep 15 '26
Personally, I don’t feel like there’s any point when people try to skirt around it or apologize to me when I’m mopping. It’s gonna get walked on as soon as I leave anyway

u/zandenCU Sep 15 '26
I walk like a drunk flamingo trying not to touch the wet spot. arms out, knees high, looking ridiculous but it works.
1
u/antoindotnet Sep 16 '26
As a person who is responsible for the cleanliness and safety of a public liminal space, I do my best to mop in sections so there’s a dry path to walk to the most common locations. I’d say about 80% of people look at my method and figure it out. 10% will deliberately walk across the wet part, and 10% are just lacking in situational awareness.
I always appreciate when people apologize if they have to cross my wet floor and never want people to walk dangerously. I take pride in the beauty and functionality of the space, and the compliments from the public make it even more worth my time.
1
u/Weekly-Masterpiece96 Sep 16 '26
I find this so silly. I appreciate the gesture but I've mopped, my jobs done, I don't care.
1
u/Snuggle_Pounce Sep 16 '26
When I was mopping at work that always worried/bothered me because the tip-toe-r, although paying attention, wasn’t using all their tread and so was more likely to fall.
The regular folks who did a little foot wiggle when hitting the wet and then just walked through, were at least being safe.
(The assholes who never looked below their noses were in fact the most likely to fall/die due to having no clue they just marched past four wet floor signs.)

Omg. I work on a hospital unit, and every time I’m working, when we have to give medications in the morning, between 0700 - 1000 the EVS personnel are mopping the common areas including the hallways to the medication rooms! I always apologize and try to take as few steps on the freshly mopped floors!
1
u/Monscawiz Sep 16 '26
Do we have any janitors here that can confirm whether this is genuinely appreciated or not and whether it makes a notable difference?
I think a lot of us have been doing it for years and it would be nice to hear

I do this for all cleaning staff, except the one at my work who usually helps me with Safety Team tasks. He keeps stealing my bucket so I stomp through the wet floor like a heathen while making direct eye contact and steal a single absorbent pad off his cart.

u/Holzkohlen 28d ago
I respect the people doing some actual work around here. Not many of them, are there?

Foot prints are proof the custodian mopped and it’s always funny when you see a perfect trail and A huge streak where the person lost their footing and left the evidence.
