50mm Sloyd Knife by Gary Hackett, a UK tool maker. 01 tool steel, probably around 60-62 HRC (unconfirmed).
Silvern Works knives by Ken Silvern out of New York. O1 tool steel and around 60-62 HRC.
- Blue oval dymalux handle 1.5inch convex knife
- Green whaletail dymalux handle 1.5inch upswept knife
All razor sharp, and carve brilliantly. Very impressed with how quickly the Silvern Works knives came, 3 weeks to the UK from order, production to shipping. Gary's sloyd was batch made and ready to ship, but he told me he has a 3 month lead time on custom work. He will make draw knives, axes, anything you'd imagine from steel.
First chance to test them both out today but thought I'd share because custom maker knives always look so beautiful.

This new carving has a backstory. 🐦⬛ 🎃 🪦 It started as a raven on a pumpkin. When I made the initial rough cut with my band saw, I accidentally cut too deep into one area (where the back of the raven would be). So, I created a solution from the mistake and decided it would be a slot where I could place a card with a "Happy Halloween" message.
Then, my wife said it would be fun if the raven and pumpkin were sitting on a headstone. I carved a headstone, drilled a hole in the top, and placed a stem where I could attach my raven and pumpkin on top. That way, I could easily separate them for storage purposes after the holidays.
Well, when I was taking the photos of my finished carving, I accidentally broke the stem that held the raven and pumpkin on top (ugh!). Sooooo, now they are glued to the headstone permanently.
This piece has been added to the other Halloween decorations in our home. Next, I have been asked to create an entire graveyard 🪦😳

Got the before and after pictures in here somewhere. For some reason I have an easier time with more complicated whittles

Finished it with some Howard citrus-shield paste wax.. I want to experiment with other finishes in the future!

The first two look like deformed blobs but after i figured the proportions, i guess third time’s the charm.
p.s. i broke a leg of the lil guy so i will have to figure a way to fix it, if you have suggestions they are welcome.

I’ve whittled on and off for a few years now and never seem to get much better at it. I absolutely love doing it and watching people create. I’m coming back to it for the hundredth time now. What am I doing wrong? Where should I focus to do better? Thanks! Photo taken on my new Fuji camera which I’m much better at than whittling 😆

I like the idea of getting into whittling, so I've been hanging out on this sub for a while. The more I look into it, the more it seems like the hobby of whittling is really the hobby of knife-sharpening--or, less controversially, that getting into the hobby of whittling means you're also getting into the hobby of sharpening. Is that accurate?
Whittling looks fun. Sharpening looks like a pain. So I'm thinking about trying power carving instead. Am I overestimating the difficulty of keeping a blade more-than-razor sharp?

Trying to get into whittling but really struggling to find out where to get good carving wood. Can anybody help with what to use and where to get it?

Hi everyone
Already for a few time i wanted to ask this, you guys start a project and go till the end with it? When I started carving, I could not rest till the piece I started is finish. Injuries, pain.. but still pushing because I was obsessed in finish it.
One year later (more or less), I do start a piece.. and it stays there looking at me unfinished, while I start another one. And another. And another.. have now a box full of unfinish things. Is just me, or is a brain carving disorder? Ahaha
The image is just a few pieces..
And with this post now, it made me open the box.. I found a walking stick I wanted to do. I went with experiments and mixed 2 kinds of wood. Now I want to finish it ahah but lack the ideas and creativity for it. It seems the old me made a very small handle.
I thought a bird, a wolf or something.. but to small.
Im open to ideas too..

Carved this fish skeleton out of basswood in pieces and then tied together for a Halloween decoration, then painted it white. Not a ton of details in the carving but it took a while to de-bulk all the material. I think I am going to keep it out all year round!

I’m fairly decent at whittling, and used to do that for details on projects from wood shop class. We had yearly competitions for categories and had to impress the vocational shop classes’ students: automotive, metals, construction AND our own carpentry guilds… I got good marks and was voted most likely to become a luthier!
Anyway, I want to customize my Martins Backpacker guitar :) with whitled designs.
I’m thinking the sides of the guitar body, and probably the front/back.
I’m considering Celtic knot designs, with actual
Rope texture, but I’m mixtecan/Native American so I think I might go with a Mexica/Aztec/Nahuatl based printed style of design motifs!
I remember seeing those X-acto whittling kits: are those any good?
I’d likely make paper templates, paste those on, start the outline work, and then progress. Once done, sanding the paper off would probably work, and then I can paint and stain.
I think the wood is spruce, mahogany.

So for anyone who has the FlexCut KN700 Deluxe Palm & Knife Set... the box absolutely sucks. Anyways the box got stuck shut on one of the palm tools and in the process of getting it open the knives got jostled around a lot. And i noticed that my detail knife has this imperfection along the edge now. I tried stropping it to realign the edge but that didn't work... now my stropping technique probably isnt the best... but any advice on how to fix the edge?
I have no idea how to actually sharpen. Im still pretty new.
Thanks!
