Meta r/Weirdlit Required/Recommended Reading

Spurred from this post, I thought it would be a good idea to have an official r/WeirdLit reading list on Goodreads and Storygraph (similar to r/Horrorlit's Goodread list). Or, you can use this thread as the list (found below) itself so you don't have to use an account for Goodreads and Storygraph.

The r/Weirdlit lists have been made: Goodreads / Storygraph, though WIP. People can vote for books on the Goodreads list!

So, which weird lit books do you think are required reading or what ones would you recommend to someone looking to start their venture into the Weird?

Discussion Any Leonora Carrington fans?

Post image
178 Upvotes

She was a surrealist painter, but her writing is equally fascinating. She wrote the novel The Hearing Trumpet among others and a series of fascinating short stories. I've read the Complete Stories, Down Below, and I'm looking forward to The Hearing Trumpet in the near future, which is waiting on my shelf. I read the first couple dozen pages or so in the bookstore and was absolutely fascinated. She has an amazing style that reminds me somewhat of Kafka, but through a more female lens. Her paintings are wonderful too (I recently started a community dedicated just to her work). Would love to hear from any fans, she seems underappreciated (though her paintings sell for tens of millions).

Question/Request Video game recs that feel like weird fiction?

• Upvotes

(Apologies if this isn't sufficiently a book question to be allowed)

Hi! I'm looking for recommendations for video games that feel like weird fiction books. Some books I have enjoyed - Lots of China Mieville - Piranesi - Annihilation - Metal from Heaven - House of Leaves - There Is No Antimemetics Division - Saint of Bright Doors

I have already played Control and am aware of the other Remedy games.

I like cosmic horror (though it's not a requirement, eg I wouldn't consider Piranesi in this genre) but I don't like jumpscare style horror or "you have three bullets and a guy is chasing you" style horror games.

Recommend Looking for a cosmic horror or fantasy book recommendation.

I'm trying to find a good book/book series that gives a feeling that something in the world isn't quite right, whether it's an entity that causes chaos or the world around the main characters is off for some reason.

H. P. Lovecraft: When the Stars Are Right

Looks like this documentary featuring people from the Lovecraft Circle is finally hitting the funding levels it needs to be finished.

Expectation is that it will be doing the festival/convention circuit in 2028

News From Weird House Press Inhabitants of Wraithwood: Best Stories by W. H. Pugmire €90,95

These stories include many of those Pugmire wrote about his fictitious Sesqua Valley, where the veils between this and other realms are especially thin. Other stories relate directly to the inventions of H. P. Lovecraft, but are made wholly original through Pugmire’s unique voice and imagination. Also, herein you will find all of the stories Pugmire wrote about the mysterious artist and seeker of terrible beauty, Enoch Coffin.

It also has an introduction from S.T. Joshi and an afterward by Jeffery Thomas.

edit:forgot the link to the book. You can see the book here. Only 20 total left of two versions.

Medieval Weird: looking for recommendations!

I’m looking for recommendations for weird fiction set during the medieval ages, preferably in Europe. I really like the high medieval time period, But I’ll take stuff more set in the dark ages.

Things like Clark Ashton Smith’s Averoigne cycle. Some of this more recent medieval folk core definitely comes close such as everybody’s favorite book between two fires and stuff like hell mouth or starving Saints.

While I’m looking for historical, I wouldn’t object to secondary fantasy world or dying earth with a medieval tech level if it feels medieval.

Kafka: health and Evil recommendation?

Hi,
Anyone have recommendations for reading on the idea of health and vitality/youth as manifestations of evil, or the relation of health/strength with evil?
Reason I’m asking is that ending scene in Kafka Metamorphosis where the sister stretches her "healthy young” body has very sinister undertones (was just reading it) and want to think more about this and see what ppl have said,
thanks

Question/Request Looking Glass Sound question

I finished Looking Glass Sound by Catriona Ward last night and I was left scratching my head about something. I didn’t see anyone mention this in all the other posts explaining the ending.

Near the end Harper says to Pearl that Rebecca was never found, and Pearl says the cave didn’t exist. How the heck is that possible? If the oil drum women weren’t found how was Alton arrested in the first place? If the cave didn’t exist then how did the cave give Wilder ptsd? I’m so confused.

Discussion Tim Powers Fans?

Any fans of Tim Powers on this sub / consider him weird lit? Anubis Gates is without a doubt the weirdest book I’ve ever read and I know he’s a fan of weird stuff cause he was tapped to write the intro to one of the volumes of the collected works of CAS from Nightshade.

The Man in the Watch Still Visits Me At Night

Post image
43 Upvotes

This is a new release from Joshua Chaplinsky. I’m nearing the end and loving it. It’s being marketed as a novel that is House of Leaves meets David Lynch.

The story follows three women whose lives become connected through the mysterious, decaying Vogel House, a place haunted by a sinister entity known as the Man in the Watch.

Thought I’d share with the group. Anyone else read or reading?

Review Blacktail by Scott Hawkins is Weirdly beautiful

Post image
258 Upvotes

I just finished reading Blacktail by Scott Hawkins and I absolutely adored it; despite its fantastical horror-thriller tale of revenge by an otherworldly beast on all humanity, I ended up siding with the animals. There’s a deep message here, and almost a heart warming end albeit a gory and sordid story filled with brutal violence and animal cruelty.
