Form check Barbell Back Squat Hip Shift

Barbell Back Squat hasn't been my thing really since I started strength training almost 2 years ago, PTs often stick to V-Squats and other easier variations of squats than teaching a rather complex movement which takes some time to master the technique.

Before I knew it I was doing 120 kg on V-Squat under the PTs supervision but struggling with a mere total 40 kg on the Barbell back squat because I didn't know to brace or the squat stance or how to hold on to the bar on my traps et cetera.

After I discontinued the PT and started training on my own, I tried reintroducing the Barbell back squat and to my great displeasure eventhough I could do 60-70 kg , on close inspection of my squat videos from behind revealed 2 things, a butt wink and a substantial hip shift.

I was able to correct my butt wink with the help of a wedge, reducing the overall depth, among other tricks, but I never understood or tried to understand the reason, like most people who workout in the gym, I was looking for quick fixes than to solve the underlying reasons.

As far as I was concerned my gym had a great leg press machine and I gave up barbell back squat altogether and stuck to split squats.

Now I have moved to another gym which has the worst leg press machine and long story short I have substantially improved on Quad focussed Bulgarian Split squats doing 3 sets of 10 reps each with 30 kg dumbells in each hand (60 kg total which is 80% of my 75 kg body weight).

And I have been wanting to reintroduce barbell back squats for the sake of actually mastering the movement and I thought I'd first address my issues before jumping under the bar and so I started with kettlebell hip shifts along with band around my shins and doing controlled squats with a 2 second descend and a slight pause at the bottom, I have also increased my squat width based on my anatomy.

This is my 3rd time doing the barbell squat and this was the 1st time I'm starting my leg day with it, I usually start with Bulgarian Split Squat and so today I decided instead to start with BBB Squats

My schedule

Warm up set

Banded empty bar x 8 reps

Banded 40 kg x 5 reps

Banded 50 kg x 5 reps

1st set 60 kg x 5 reps

2nd set 70 kg x 5 reps

3rd set 80 kg x 7 reps (2-3 RIR)

4th set 80 kg x 6 reps (1-2 RIR)

This video should have been recorded exactly from the center, but there was no place and it's to my left and as such the hip shift (to the right) isn't very substantial, but it's still evident, but no where near as how it was 7 months back when I stopped doing squats because of the shift.

I believe I have come a long way and have a long way to go before I aspire to hit 2x bodyweight, if that's even possible for me.

For all the squat experts out there, I solicit your feedback on how substantial my hip shift is and what else I can do to minimize it as much as possible and also if any other evident corrections are required in my execution. Also any corrections to my warm up routine, number of sets and reps.

By the way, my lower back feels absolutely fine during and after the squats, 100% pain free.

TL;DR : Hip shift during barbell back squat, considerably reduced by incorporating kettlebell hip shifts, banded tempo squats and working on dorsiflexion.

Took a break from oly lifting now I’m trying to get back into it. Trying to fix early arm bend and butt shooting up off the floor. What exercises do I need to fix these problems? I’ve been lifting for 3 months do I really need a coach ?

Fluff Snatch Now vs. Two Months Ago (65kg)

Ended up falling ill just before my meet scheduled for this past Saturday. To make up for it and test some PRs, on Tuesday I worked to a heavy single in both snatch and C&J (86kg). No misses, and since I was still recovering, I didn't push either any further

Really proud of how far my snatch form has progressed. While there is certainly a jump forward and some instability in the first clip, comparing it to August is night and day. Here is what's changed:

- Starting stance is more narrow

- Early hip rise and some unnecessary arm bend

- Getting under the bar quicker. Rather than yanking the bar up, I've gotten better at my turnover and overhead strength

Fluff Is a weightlifting / s&c coach a viable career path

Context - working in advertising the past 5 years but am very aware AI is coming for jobs

One of the few jobs I can think of is a becoming a weightlifting coach

My question is, is it a viable career & does it pay the bills? Do you need to have your own gym to make reasonable money from it? Would be cool to hear from UK coaches in particular

EDIT - based in what everyone is say majority of coaches have some form of other income as well - there is definitely potential for a gym in my area as the closest weightlifting specific gym is approx 1 hr drive away

Form check Form check for new guy

Hey guys, Im 27, 89kg 196lbs, Just started training weightlifting style a couple weeks ago. Looking for some pointers on transitioning from initial pull to the catch, and also any advice for anything else. Also looking to document my progress somewhere.

I recently saw a video of li dayin, and then shortly after karlos nasar and I was really impressed with their physiques and how strong they are, and then I saw all of you in here and was like damn these guys and gals are WAYY stronger than me despite me having all this (apprently useless) muscle. I somehow knew nothing about the sport up to now and think it might finding a new passion haven't missed a gym session since starting new training.

Thanks in advance, cheers!

Form check Tell me whats wrong with my clean and jerk

I have been going to the gym for 1.6 years now and developed an interest for OLY over the last month. I've been practicing clean and jerks and this is a video of me doing it with 80KG.

For context, I have been able to consistently get 70KG cleans since the start, but failed 80KG every so often because I failed to get under the bar. I believe I've always had the strength, since I DL 204KG and can press 100, just not the techique. Two days ago I finally managed to fix that and now can get under the bar consistently for 80KG, but I'm sure this is far from an actually good execution.

I'd love it if you could share any tips.

Equipment Shoes to replace adipowers

I’ve been lifting with the red adipowers for over a decade now. I’m starting to feel like I want to move on from them sometime soon, and am curious what people feel is the best / most similar replacement? I really like how light they are and how athletic they feel, so I’m looking for something similar, but I’m just ready for something different. I was considering Anta 2 or possibly the newer romaleos? The newer ones seem much lighter than the older versions but not sure if super narrow. I also would like to keep a similar heel height but could adjust to a minor change if it’s worth it. Considerations - I need smaller sizing (6 / 38.5 EU), prefer black shoes, and $200 seems like even too much so I would not like to spend more than that if I can help it. Thank you for your thoughts!!
