Day 5 of building my own programming language live: the scanner is done, and now I'm starting on representing code

Hey everyone! I'm back for day 5 of my series where I'm building Jerison_Lang, my own interpreter, live on stream. I'm porting Crafting Interpreters from Java to Python.

Yesterday on day 4, I finished identifiers and keywords, so the scanner can now tell names like myVariable apart from reserved words like if, while, and fun. I also reorganized the test suite, added tests that check the error messages the scanner prints, and trimmed out redundant test cases.

Today I'm moving into the next chapter, Representing Code. I'll set up the syntax tree classes the parser will build, then write a small printer that turns those trees back into readable text, so I can check them.

If you're into programming, learning how languages work under the hood, or just want to hang out while someone figures things out in real time, come through. Questions are always welcome, beginner or not.

🐍 Python Day 4 of building my own programming language. Today I'm rebuilding the scanner without the book

Hey everyone! I'm back for Day 4 of building Jerison_Lang, my own interpreter.

Yesterday, I got the scanner working by following the book. It handles operators, comments, strings, numbers, identifiers, and keywords.

Today, I'm putting the book away and trying to rebuild the whole thing from scratch. I want to see how much I actually understand without relying on the book to tell me what to do next.

I'll be talking through my thought process as I go, explaining why I'm making certain decisions and working through anything that trips me up. This is more about making sure I understand what I've built than adding new features.

I'm still learning as I go, so it definitely won't be perfect. If you're into programming languages, interpreters, or just curious about how this stuff works under the hood, feel free to stop by!

Beginners are welcome, and I'm always happy to chat and answer questions as best I can.

Day 3: building a programming language from scratch (Python, live)

I'm streaming my journey of building my own programming language from scratch. On day 2, the scanner came together, and today I'm tackling identifiers and keywords and squashing the last failing test.

It's beginner-friendly and very much learn-as-I-go. If you like watching code get built step by step, come hang out!

📅 Monday, October 19th, around 8AM Eastern

I stream live building/deploying real apps with AI, come throw problems at me

I basically don't hand-write code anymore, I direct AI and my actual job is the scaling/deploy/API side. I've started streaming the whole thing live, mostly the unglamorous part: real deploys, stuff breaking in prod, fixing it on air.

It's an open thing, drop a bug or an architecture question in chat and I'll work through it live. no script, sometimes it goes wrong, that's kind of the point.
