Day 5 of building my own programming language live: the scanner is done, and now I'm starting on representing code
Hey everyone! I'm back for day 5 of my series where I'm building Jerison_Lang, my own interpreter, live on stream. I'm porting Crafting Interpreters from Java to Python.
Yesterday on day 4, I finished identifiers and keywords, so the scanner can now tell names like myVariable apart from reserved words like if, while, and fun. I also reorganized the test suite, added tests that check the error messages the scanner prints, and trimmed out redundant test cases.
Today I'm moving into the next chapter, Representing Code. I'll set up the syntax tree classes the parser will build, then write a small printer that turns those trees back into readable text, so I can check them.
If you're into programming, learning how languages work under the hood, or just want to hang out while someone figures things out in real time, come through. Questions are always welcome, beginner or not.
