Flying cars are priced in
792
u/entered_bubble_50 10h ago
I know this isn't really the sub for serious analysis, but here it is:
The launch was really just a distraction from the bad news they announced at the same time: they're not going to start production until 2028, and the price has yet to be announced.
Given 2028 is more than two weeks away, you have to add the standard "Elon factor" to that - i.e. Tesla's next product won't be available until after 2030. That is an agonizingly long time between models, and Tesla won't have anything competitive to sell in a year or two. The markets have had time to digest this now, and aren't happy.
417
u/Alessrevealingname 9h ago
Very cogent and rational analysis, however, the market has fallen for it 20 times before. Elon has taken more money out of TSLA than the company has made in profits in its entire history and people still don't see the fraud.
117
u/Heelincal 8h ago
people still don't see the fraud.
I think everyone sees it, but the number keeps going up so fuck it. I would wager that there's very few people that genuinely think TSLA is worth this valuation.
19
u/subaruguy3333 4h ago
Tesla bros are a real thing, they also think the trader in the white house, is there great and almighty leader!
45
u/OhAitchEyeOh 8h ago
But how does anyone know when to pull out? If it really isn't worth it, isn't it effectively a ponzi scheme that will result in a lot of people holding the bags? Though, maybe that's true for everything anyway

That’s the question of all bubbles. Tesla is essentially a bubble in and of itself. I’ll bet if the dems win in 2028 that may be the popping of it because that’ll probably be the end of any government cooperation with musk.

I think when something is a meme people will pay more than even they think it is worth. I know people who have spent $1000 on a pokemon card. I bet if I asked them, do you think it was worth $1000 they'd probably say no they bought it as an investment...

I'll go out on a limb and say that cars that can jump over semi-trucks using rocket engines will NEVER be approved for street use. So while it was an interesting performance, the final product will not meet the expectations Musk just set for it.
Further Tesla desperately needs a sub-$30k model to stay relevant. All the newest EV car companies aren't advertising gee-whiz features they're advertising affordability.
Instead Musk shows off a super-car that few aside from himself are likely able to afford... it just seems out of touch with the market especially after the debacle that was the Cybertruck.
176
u/WhoPoopedMyPants420 8h ago edited 8h ago
I think a lot of fanboys are overlooking the fact that the issue isn't even the flying. "Buhh they're flexing the feature is really meant for speed and traction". It's about being allowed to have those pressurized canisters in the car at all.
Look at the force that shit exerts and ask yourself what happens if one of these gets hit in the wrong spot. Fuckin fender bender sends your car through four kindergartens and an intercontinental flight. Whatever the final product looks like, it's sure as fuck not going to be this.
61
u/Heelincal 8h ago
Look at the force that shit exerts
And it's like, if they weren't lying with the car and it's a full production spec with a battery and all of the finish on the inside... that's a shitton of force being exerted to flip the car let alone keep it airborne. Again assuming they didn't just hollow out a shell of a car and lie.
48
u/GSmithDaddyPDX 8h ago
I was hoping a human would walk out of the car at the end of any of the demonstrations. This isn't even something they're confident enough to put a person inside of.
Who is the product for?
Are car flying parks going to be built like rocket league? Who would both be able to afford that, and put their own body in the car? Maybe a spectator sport? Still not quite the product that makes sense right now with BYD etc. coming for the whole of the USA's lunch.
As an engineer though it was a really cool demo!
4
u/Admmmmi 6h ago
Ngl a sport using these cars would be cool, but what kind of sport? Like, the cars have a limited range of what they can do so acrobatics on the air is probably out of question, specially if they put someone inside and rocket league is asking for someone to die, so what's left? Races? Again asking for someone to die .

11
u/almightywhacko 5h ago
I totally trust some tech bro not to fly that car into a building full of people or crash it on top of a school bus or something too. Or even worse, Tesla's computerized driving tech considering it's track record of "safe driving...."
It is just a ridiculous thing to build and advertise.
Again assuming they didn't just hollow out a shell of a car and lie.
Considering Tesla faked the Optimus roboto demo and then lied about them being remotely controlled by humans, and Musk lied about the Hyperloop, lied about Tesla FSD, lied about the release date of the Cybertruck, etc. I'm pretty sure this card was a hollowed out shell prepared only for this demo. I doubt Musk could fit those rocket boosters into the vehicle with a full size battery, compressed fuel tanks for the rockets and all the normal safety features required in modern cars.
But again, it is a ridiculous thing to advertise.

I was reading up on it today, it's just a distraction or non-road use. Five seconds of full thrust, generates 5-10,000 PSIs, 80 kiloNewtons of force. Apparently the force is strong enough that it breaks the speed of sound. It would fuck up any cars close to it in traffic.

Edit: I mean, as much as I hate Elon, I just wanted to say that this does look pretty cool tech-wise. I wonder if it will be used for like, emergency braking in future cars. That would be pretty dope. But I really don't see how this could lead to revenue increasing or the stock increasing for any other reason.

Sure, to an 8 year old. You'd think a company whose last major product was a complete flop would maybe focus on something practical that would actually give their cars an edge over the competition.

The letter X was cool for a bit in the 90's, so see him just hanging onto that. Like I seriously doubt that the X-games were named that because if you translate X into ASCII it becomes 88, and then if you translate each of those 8's into the alphabet, you get HH which can be an abbreviation for Heil Hitler.
It seems too convoluted vs. the idea that he became enraptured with the letter X during its 15-minutes of fame in the 90's (and has never let go of it).

u/Suitable_Switch5242 9h ago
The Nevada one is a joint venture with Panasonic. Panasonic builds the cells, Tesla assembles them into battery packs.
They are building their own cells in Texas but I think these are mostly going into Cybertrucks and are still behind the competition on energy density.
The vast majority of cars Tesla sells use battery cells from third party suppliers.

From a perspective of someone who works for another OEM, even though I despise Elon, a lot of stuff about their cars and the systems they use are quite impressive. But a lot of why is because they are so different to other car manufacturers, they have so much data from their cars that gets amalgamated to help with diagnosis etc. I’m not sure that would ever work if you’ve got other people using the tech.

Does anyone in this thread actually believe tesla will ever get close to putting this into production or that yesterday's demonstration actually involved a drivable car, not just a ultra light shell with ballonish tires sitting on some lunar lander parts he stole from nasa?
61
u/ConLawHero 5h ago
If they do, I have some bridges to sell them as well. There's never going to be flying cars unless it's 100% computer controlled. Driving in 2D is difficult enough for most people, I wouldn't trust 99.9999% people to drive in 3D.
Also, rocket engines on a fucking car? We don't even use those on planes unless you're talking about certain military aircraft, missiles or rockets.
He can't even get actual self-driving and I feel like that is far more likely to be accomplished before anything like he did in the demo.

Cool tech demo? Sure. Practical? No.
We don't need more cool tech right now. We need better and cheaper tech. I'd be more impressed if Tesla demoed an EV that retails for under <$20k.
Which is why I'm fundamentally bearish on Tesla long term despite it's defiance of gravity. Tesla will never scale a useful product to market again because Elon is fundamentally convinced the average consumer will need to perish for humanity to advance intonwhatever era he is trying to move into.

As cool as it was to see, I fail to see how manipulating a 2 ton vehicle using thrusters that were designed to manipulate 1000-3000 ton rockets is supposed to be technologically and mechanically impressive.
Cool? Abso-fucking-lutely.
Impressive? Not really.
When you’re the company in charge of pioneering Stage-0 takeoff capabilities and discovering how to feasibly reuse rockets by catching them, making a standard consumer car do a backflip is, like, the bare minimum.

Well in fairness on that front, there is nothing about the roadster that was ever going to be practical.
If you were the type with a ton of disposable money and liked to take your car to the track then this would appeal to you. 1 second 0-60 time and the ability to take curves at near full speed would be ridiculous.
That said, I doubt there are enough people in that category to matter. And a healthy percentage of those are gonna probably kill themselves with this car if they do buy it.
