Perfectly valid. I like her as a VA, I like her as an actress, I like her as a comedian, but it really takes me off the game whenever I see recognizable actors in games more than once.
Imagine Joel from TLOU just being Troy Baker's face 1:1 with the same hair he wears IRL. That'd be ridiculous.
It's so lazy for me when devs do that. Like a Hollywoodification of games.

With her specifically they do it so often that itâs VERY immersion breaking because âoh Therese Debra Wilson againâ.
Like the first time I saw them do it was wolfenstein and Iâd never seen her before so it was chill.
But then they did it for death stranding and Jedi fallen order series and god of war and wolverine. After awhile itâs distracting.6
u/FloopsFooglies 8h ago
I think the executives think that if there's recognizable actors and actresses that makes it more like a movie and therefore more... like its a real piece of media? Or something? Like they view games are kiddo stuff and think real actors makes it adult stuff and therefore worth investing. Idk
4
u/Maximum-Objective-39 7h ago
Probably. I think it's cool to d from time to time, but I am definitely much more onboard with giving VA's different faces for the sake of variety.
2
u/zombiezapper115 5h ago
Yeah its a bit immersion breaking cause then all im thinking is "what's the lady from Suicide Squad doing here?" Or "hey, its my jedi master đ"
1
u/BeardBearWithBeer 4h ago
where is she in god of war
you mean that dark elf girlie? who hook up with light elf guy and they sit in freyr's camp all the time
1
u/TrippinTrash 1h ago
Nah, she played Gryla, the giant grandma. She looks pretty different in game so I don't know why GoW is mentioned.
15
u/DragunityHero 9h ago
Mortal Kombat has been taking a liking to doing this. Ronda Rousey as Sonya and Megan Fox as Nitara were god-awful.
But even beyond the random celebrity casting, instead of hand-crafting unique faces for the characters, theyâve just been face-scanning people and calling it a day. Itâs why most of the cast looks uncanny and completely different in every game and I hate it.
10
u/OJONLYMAYBEDIDIT 9h ago
Some times itâs awesome though
Like when MK used Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawaâs likeness for Shang Tsung
7
u/DragunityHero 9h ago
I will definitely agree with that, although thatâs a little bit different of a situation considering he gave a legendary performance as Shang Tsung already. Rousey and Fox were like âcelebrity of the weekâ picks and their performance was abysmal.
5
u/Original_Release_419 9h ago
Tbf, itâs because it makes the facial animations 100x easier
Otherwise the graphic artist needs to try and recreate the performance the VA did
2
u/Meme-San_ 8h ago
You can still make the character look different than the actor and use the facial performance of the actor
Neither of the spiderman face models look like yuri lowenthal but to my knowledge they were still able to translate his face scans into the game for expressions
5
u/MudSeparate1622 9h ago
I feel like beyond two souls looked so good early that everyone just wanted to map real faces in every aaa game after that
4
u/Sea_Helicopter_5377 8h ago
I'll 100% agree to that, David Cage (no matter people's personal opinions about his games) kinda is a pioneer on ideas.
He is the ultimate "ideas guy". Open world with multiple playable characters with different interactions... (Omikron), using famous people for the sake of it (Omikron), social messages via games (Omikron).
7
u/fpfall 9h ago
> Imagine Joel from TLOU just being Troy Baker's face 1:1 with the same hair he wears IRL. That'd be ridiculous.
Lol you mean like how Sinister literally is just his face too in Wolverine but then also just his face in Death Stranding as well?
Itâs so weird
11
u/Significant-Sun-5051 8h ago
In Death Strandjng it makes sense as they use the actors faces for all characters. In Wolverine itâs weird though.
4
u/Maximum-Objective-39 8h ago
Yeah, it's a very deliberate choice by Kojima and also his studio puts a lot of work into making the scans look good. I despise the conspiracy that game studios are trying to make characters 'ugly', but a lot of them do seem to put in the minimum effort when duplicators a VA's likeness, leading to very plasticy and unflattering presentations.
2
u/Drekus90 7h ago
So looking at the VAs, pretty much all of the Wolverine characters are modeled off their actors. Jean Grey definitely has her VAs nose. Wolverine is explicitly modeled off his VA. Then there's Wilson and Baker, and Sabertooth definitely looks like his VA as well.
2
u/Meme-San_ 8h ago
âLike a hollywoodification of gamesâ that feels like what Sony wants tbh. So many of there exclusives feel like theyâre leaning closer and closer to movies and I wouldnât be surprised if ârecognizable actorsâ was a closer push to that
1
u/Maximum-Objective-39 8h ago
I'd say that's a fair complaint. And I do think it's because, for the longest time, games were trying to become movies. You can see that all the way back with the inception of the Uncharted series.

Keep in mind that Wilson has said she loves when her character doesn't look like her, as it allows her to play her role better because she's not looking at herself within that world, and she isn't sure why developers insist on using her likeness
25
u/a_man_has_a_name 7h ago
She is the only persons face I can recognise across multiple franchises playing different characters, i cannot think of another face I have ever recognised across multiple different video game franchises.
Off the top of my head destiny, the jedi games, pretty sure she was in a COD or other FPS, death stranding. Are all games she was in.
I cannot name another person i could say were in multiple games from the face alone. I more often recognise voices.

True, but Destiny really goes against the idea presented here. Cant exactly say Savathun is modeled after her
38
u/Eat--The--Rich-- 10h ago
That's why tho. They're trying to do the same thing Hollywood does and get people to go "that's the girl from that jedi game I liked, I subconsciously want to play this new game now"

u/Salty_West_429 9h ago
Yeah and I get the idea but for me it pulls me right of being I'm.ersed in the games world. Cause I don't think that's character x, I think that's debra wilson. It's a similar problem to what I have with prolific voice actors who do one similar voice like Nolan North but worse.
9
u/TheRealGurd 9h ago
That's what I appreciate about Ace Combat 8. She voices a major character in the game, does an excellent job like she always does, but her likeness isn't really used for the character, so I don't have the constant "real life" aspect breaking the immersion every time I see her.
5
u/Sonic10122 8h ago
At least Nolan North CAN sound different, Penguin in the Batman Arkham games is the one I always point to. Him, and other recognizable voice actors like Troy Baker, are typically directed to do the same style of voice because, again, they want them to sound like Nathan Drake/Sam/whatever.
Troy Baker also gets his likeness used a lot so he gets the short end of both sticks anymore.
1
u/Salty_West_429 8h ago
You know what that's fair. I was mostly thinking of hearing him as Nathan drake while he was playing walker in spec ops the line. I have also played a lot of games troy baker has disappeared into but now that I think he has several very similar sounding roles.
3
u/JenniLightrunner 9h ago
Yeah it kinda goes against the best part of voice acting "not requiring to look perfect for the character unlike a movie and just needing a good voice and voice acting skill" Otherwise you might as well just start doing movie acting, the whole point of voice acting is that they DON'T look like you
1
u/Salty_West_429 9h ago
Yeah cause in voice acting I can be a dragon, elf, dwarf, or eldeotch nightmare blob and not worry about how I physically fit those roles. That seems to be what she wants to do and is sad she can't disappear into the role.
43
u/randomcman 10h ago
Going to have to agree with her. Sheâs a great performer but seeing the same likeness in all these games gets weird, no matter who it is. I liked her in Wolfenstein 2 though, she rocked that look

u/Poop_Balls069 9h ago
Wolfenstein is what introduced me to her video game career. And I was so fucking on board.Â
24
u/A_Hideous_Beast 9h ago

u/Synth_Air 1h ago

17
u/SarcasticGamer 8h ago
It's so weird why western devs feel the need to make the characters look like the actors nowadays when they didn't before. If Last of Us came out today, Joel would 100% look like Troy Baker. It's just so distracting. The funny thing is Debra Wilson is in the new ace combat game but since they didn't use her likeness people didn't even realize it was her.

It's funny because I was starting to irrationally dislike her appearances (not seriously, just offhand) because I erroneously assumed she had an ego and was requiring her face to appear in every role she voice acted for.
When in fact it's the complete opposite. She even explains the same problem I had with all of this.. it becomes very unimmersive when you see the same face repeating across different game genres and IPs.
We try to suspend disbelief for films, because, obviously. But why on Earth would you not take advantage of the digital medium and take complete creative freedom? I think.. laziness.
Much respect to her.

I mean comment about "I could just do theater" is very apt. We are much more understanding in theater about character appearance. It's not a requirement in video game design. So trying for a 1 to 1 is odd.
A prime example. When Last of Us came out there was lots of comments about how Ellie looked like Ellen Page. Ashley Johnson, who is gorgeous, looks nothing like Ellie. It didn't hurt the character for her to look different.

sheâs a poster child for diversity for whatever reason, even if she herself doesnât want to see herself there, the gaming ceos eat it up.
18
u/bettycrockofsh1t 10h ago edited 8h ago
The truth, and we all know it, is that to ceos and shareholders or whatever, she's like 5 different boxes they want to check at once. They want women, but they don't want stereotypically attractive women, they want them to look "visually" strong/unconventional or downright masculine traits if possible, and they want them non white. She's all of them, and also is a good voice actor. She's a swiss army knife to the modern corporate marketing people who unfortunately see her as multi use tokenism.
4
u/reluctantseal 9h ago
While I'm all for diverse character designs, you can really tell when it's genuine vs corporate. Characters are designed with VAs in mind all the time without having to look like them.
It's just a shame that rather than uplifting a talented black woman, they reduce her to that instead.

5
u/Mantiquirk 9h ago
I don't think "diversity" even plays a role at all. Speaking as an artist in game dev, I think it's almost purely a production call.
They're already spending loads of cash trying to use facial capture to drive performances that they figure they might as well just use the face scans as well. It has to do with this weird obsession a lot of directors (art or otherwise) with trying to replicate realism.
The real twist here is that the scan data ironically often costs even more time and resources to clean up to look like a normal human than if they had just started from scratch. But you can't tell that to a lead or director who thinks they know how to "streamline" the pipeline. It's very dumb.
2
u/JenniLightrunner 9h ago
One of many reasons I always prefer stylized art in games rather than realistic
2
u/Max-The-Phat-Cat 9h ago
yeah itâs a whole thing with hyperrealism as well I suppose and honestly Iâm pretty tired of the aesthetic but thatâs on a personal level.

Mocap is probably cheaper than full on animation... Probably laziness...
→ More replies (1)1
u/unluckyknight13 8h ago
Depends on how they do it but I think the cost of the actors and sets may actually cost more then animation half the time because you can in theory have animation done by a team or one guy (depending on complexity) and never got to worry about the actor, or you can have the actor for who knows how long.
I wonât lie I donât fully understand the point of the cube actor for the GoW game to be on set dressed as a cube because like voice actors donât need to be next to someone to do a good performance and the cube feels like a lot of effort for something that they are mostly animating anyways

Why the focus on her specifically? I see other people pop up just as often with the same face. I like the challenge of hearing a voice and wondering who it is, but I also don't mind them being recognized by their appearance.

I love Charles from rdr2 and I think Debra Wilson is a great actor but he's been in barely half as many video games as her. She's a little under 150 right now lol. I think the opinion "I've seen her in a lot of video games" is totally fair
1
u/harmoniaatlast 8h ago
The difference is most people have no idea who Noshir is. Debra's characters tend to swallow attention in every given scene. She just looks so.... present? Refined? She stands out in terms of performance, so creatives ask for her. People have simply noticed that and they notice her more
1
1
u/Bearloom 5h ago
I can't think of any other voice actor that's had as many of their characters designed after them as Debra Wilson. They routinely get a couple: Keith David played himself in Saints Row, Sylens in Horizon was just Lance Reddick with some sci-fi nonsense on his head, Danny Trejo pops up in Yakuza: Infinite Wealth, numerous people in Death Stranding are effectively just doing cameos... but she's coming up on a dozen characters that look like her.
Not that it's her fault either way, but it can be a little jarring.
1
u/soldiercross 2h ago
Apparently she's just way better of a voice actress applying for Video games so she just gets parts that call for her style of voice and delivery. It makes sense, she's been around forever and she likes working in games cause its consistent work.
1
u/jsdjhndsm 20m ago
Everyone says she's super easy and great to work with.
No hassle, and talented, why wouldn't devs want her in games?
1
u/BobsYourUncle90 2h ago
Overexposure. Thereâs a whole image of idendikit bald white guy protagonists from the 360 era, you could probably do a similarly sized image of just Debra Johnson, sheâs in everything as herself, as the title says.
1
u/BLissy11750 58m ago
I really like Debra Wilson, I just find it kind of weird when they make the character in the game look like the voice actor to the extent that the character looks and sounds like the voice actor's orher characters in other video game franchises. I think the hate her characters get is unwarranted, but it's valid criticism (not hate) to suggest it is weird to have a 1:1 likeness of an actor show up in so many games when the actor is incredible and can do a great job portraying a character who doesn't just look like her in a slightly different art style.
Like if these were movies I would get it, but in a video game there is no limitation on how the actor looks.

I had to look up Troy Baker, and while I recognize him as Dr Evil Jr I canât think of any games his physical likeness was used for the characters he voiced.
I think Iâve enjoyed Debraâs performance as Savathun the most recently; because I didnât know it was her I could take in the performance as it was instead of immediately seeing Debra Wilsonâs face with her voice.
Not that thereâd be anything wrong with a Debra Wilson-verse of video games; but these things have not been meant to be those, and having both her voice and physical appearance in so many genres is just a noticeable common denominator. Let her voice more âcreaturesâ

People keep sharing this interview snippet like it's some ha gotcha thing, when I'm sure most of us didn't have a problem seeing her in games as a regular who seemingly loves working in video games. I think she's cool and she's been down for a long time, whether we see her likeness or not.

u/Frank1gg 6h ago
Honestly I kind of wish video games would stop using real world people and likenesses at all. One of the main reasons I couldn't get into Grand theft Auto San Andreas when it came out when I was a teenager was because of the fact that most of the main characters look like famous rap artists. The reason I can't get into a lot of games nowadays especially call of duty is cuz they keep having people who are just straight up actors from the real world.
The reason I don't like this is because of the fact that when I see a character in a video game die I'm able to actually feel something because as far as I'm concerned in that universe they're dead. However when I see an actor that I recognize from our world in a video game it takes me right out of the damn story and makes my brain immediately go oh okay this is all an act it's a play or whatever so none of these people are actually dying and I shouldn't feel anything about any of it. It's why I have a hard time getting into movies anymore is because I know none of the stakes are real. So honestly yeah in the future I hope they stop using real world likenesses in video games because it's just bad. It never looks good it's never fun and it ruins the experience.

Third reason: Marketing. The Money PeopleTM want someone to buy the game and they don't care whether it's a gamer or a good little consumer who just buys things that they recognize.
1
u/MusoukaMX 8h ago
Kinda crazy that just artistic preference isn't an option.
I mean Insomniac changed Peter Parker's design to look more like an age-matching version of Yuri Lowenthal. It wouldn't be far fetched to think they like it that way. Even if no one else likes it.
1
u/Al3jandr0 5h ago
It's always an option, but the existence of preference doesn't explain why one specific thing is a trend. Spider-Man is a cool example because he's already known as the character. Even then though, it's still a marketing decision to sell the game to people who might not have bought it on its merits as a game alone

Yea, it's weird having her appear as herself with an established character. I'm ok with it when it is an original character like in Wolfenstein or Fallen Order

It could be due to laziness or lack of 3D artists these studios might have invested a lot of money into their facial scanning equipment and thus the management then want to use it for everything
With Wolverine in particular you can tell they either lack 3D artists or don't have good ones who likely can't model a face from scratch as even the ones they did do for the game based on face scans look horrendous. So if they can't even work properly with face scans it is unlikely they can actually make a character from scratch

When I was a boy Debra Wilson had big giant titties. I think a big motivation to watch mad tv was her. When incel dudes complain about her being in video games and call her ugly or say racist shit it makes my inner child so angry.

I reeeeeeeeallly do not like real life celebrities or humans in general being used as fictional character model in games.
Iâve never really been a âmuh immersionâ kinda guy, but seeing Norman Reedus and Mads Miklsen in Death Stranding really took me out of it.
It also lends itself to narrowing the pool of unique characters down the road. If the trend takes off I could easily see a time where we end up seeing the same 3 actors in everything just like what is happening in film right now.

Every article I see about this âinterviewâ (podcast) boils it down more and more removing all context lol.

Ya I like her and think she looks great in person but I swear the face scanning stuff messes up her eyes and makes them bulge out more than they do.

Sony clearly has a modern thing now for its first party games to have long faced 40 year old women. also, showing skin is illegal

She was in AC8 and did an amazing job as a VA for a character that donât have her face

But she likes money more, so she signs the deal allowing the studio to use her likeness. She's a big hypocrite.

I just replayed Gears Tactics before E Day dropped and she plays Mikayla and she's just the voice and yeah, she's objectively a good voice actor, and although like she said it's ultimately up to the devs to put her likeness in the game, it does get pretty taxing to see her as herself in almost any AAA game you play because she's in so many of them (good for her btw). It's refreshing to see her speak on it and nice to know it's the dumbass devs and not her specifically to blame

I love me some Debra Wilson! This woman is AMAZING. But damn do I hate seeing her in everything. Really takes me out. Itâs a video game be creative! They donât do this with any other prolific voice actors. I feel like they are sabotaging her.

They could've at least use her actual likeness, she looks so much better irl with her tattoos and piercings

I didn't mind it in this game. Il thought she was perfectly cast, looks ans all. She's supposed to be a bit grizzled

My personal theory is that she's one of the top women on the planet at rocking the bald look, letting devs skate by having to model longer hair.

First saw her in Wolfenstein 2, and honestly that's still the best one to use her actual face

Genuine question, is she the most modelled actor in gaming history? I think Jack Black might be up there, with his roles in Brutal Legend, High on Life and Jumanji (maybe, even if he didn't voice that character in game), but she's got him beat.

I watched the candid video and it was great
She seems to understand and agree with the general sentiment that her likeness works on original characters but,Â
She doesnt understand using her likeness more and more over an accurate potrayal of an established or lore based character
She even seems to take greater satisfaction from her job when she gets to morph into the character completelyÂ
Seemed like a cool ladyÂ
