Today Vera would have turned 6. Sadly, he passed away from lymphoma shortly after his 5th birthday.

I went back and forth about whether to make this post, since this subreddit is meant to show the positive side of cat rescue, and talking about a cat who is no longer here doesn’t really fit the tone. But I can’t not talk about Vera today.

Vera, who gave our rescue its name. Vera, my first cat, who taught me what wonderful creatures cats are. Vera, who took care of all the kittens and scared cats when they first arrived at the rescue.

I think about him and miss him every day. But during difficult times, it’s his memory and his legacy that give me the strength to keep helping the cats who need it.

He was abandoned at the port. He had severe anemia and active FeLV, was drooling uncontrollably, and his fur was almost orange. Now he’s at a healthy weight, his fur has improved so much, and his FeLV seems to have entered the regressive phase (we need to test him again to confirm). Not only has he far surpassed the life expectancy the vet gave him, but he’s doing better than ever!
