Looking to add new moderators

Hey yall, I am not all that active on reddit these days and looks like most of the other mods arent either. A couple of them posted within the last month in other communities, and the rest of them havent posted/commented in years.

So it looks like it's time for some new mods!

Feel free to comment on here as to why you think you'd make a good moderator and uhh, idk I guess I'll start with the top 3 most upvoted comments as new mods? Unless yall have better ideas. But yeah its time to get some current students as mods and not alumni who are 10+ years out from college.

Edit: jeez i suck at typing on phones. Also looks like we are all "inactive" so I am trying to get permissions back so I can add new people

How is UMiami for veterans

Hello y’all I’m keeping this short but I’m active duty right now and was thinking about getting out and trying to go to UMiami as it’s close to home. Just looking for any people that have been in my position if there are any things to know about applying as a veteran and if there’s any culture of the sort around there. Bonus points if anyone knows about the Air Force ROTC program as a vet. Thank you all.

Political Science Majors: Does anyone have any insight on Ariel Powell?

Hi! Incoming freshman here planning out my schedule!

What are her teaching methods? Is she a hard professor? I can’t find her on rate my professor so I’m looking for any insight on her. She’s teaching a BUNCH of poli sci classes this semester so pretty much anything on her would be nice.

PS: if you have any specific classes and the assignments she assigns, that would be awesome.

Chance me for UMiami ED I — 3.1 GPA, 35 ACT, strong upward trend

Miami is my first choice. Looking for honest opinions, especially from people who applied with a low GPA and high test score.
Academics
Around 3.1 unweighted GPA.
35 ACT: 36 English, 36 Reading, 32 Math.
Strong upward trend: roughly 79–81 averages early in high school, then 88–90 junior year.
Private school in NY with a dual secular/Judaic curriculum and around nine classes.
My school didn’t permit me to take AP/DE courses until senior year because of my earlier grades. Currently taking DE Calculus and AP Psychology.
Health circumstances affected my earlier performance; planning to explain these and the course restrictions with counselor support.
Activities
Varsity tennis throughout high school; team won a championship.
Class president.
Ticket-reselling business with approximately $30,000 in sales.
Building a ticket marketplace.
Founded a nonprofit focused on community service.
Volunteering with children facing serious illnesses.
Real estate internship.
Tennis coaching and a babysitting job.
Clubs and other community service.
Application
Applying ED I.
Not requesting financial aid.
Open to spring admission.
Consistent demonstrated interest through campus visits, academic experiences and direct contact with admissions.
How competitive is this realistically? If you had a similar profile, what was your outcome, and did you apply ED, EA or RD?

Hey guys, I’m Moroccan and currently in my first semester of CS at Al Akhawayn University in Morocco. I got an 18.53/20 on my Bac and a 1340 SAT, and my dream is to study in the US, especially at the University of Miami. The problem is that my family can’t afford US tuition, so I’d need a full ride or something close to it. Since I’ve already started university after high school, am I basically forced to apply as a transfer everywhere, or do some universities still let students in my situation apply as freshmen? I’m worried that transfer students have way fewer scholarship opportunities, especially for international students. Are there universities that actually offer full rides to international transfers, or should I focus on schools where I can get good aid as a freshman if their policies allow it? Some scholarship deadlines are coming up soon, and I don’t want to miss my chances because I misunderstood the process. If anyone has been in a similar situation or knows universities worth looking into, I’d really appreciate the advice.
My initial plan was applying as a transfer but I would do anything to not kill any chance I got.
My essay is still not done and most of my projects that will be present in my transfer application wont be in my freshman application
I just wanna know please what to do
thanks
its all about the U, it is my dream destination.

intl student stats

Hi guys im a female international student from a low income family. I am planning on applying thru ED I so I really need opinions on whether my stats are good enough.

GPA: 3.99uw. we dont have weighted gpa here.

SAT: 1450 (770Math / 680 RW) - my r&w is pretty low but i have ielts 8.0??

I did igcse/as levels and is doing 3 a levels this year. igcse grades are A*A*ABBC whereas as levels are AB. (retaking another as level because i got U)

ECs: internship at a tech company, 300+ hours of volunteering, tutoring(math, english, it), paid teaching(english), working at a family business, 2 leadership positions, worked as a liaison officer(translator also) x2, babysitting my 1 year old sister..etc theyre pretty mid

Our school is a pretty small public school and we only 52 students in our grade so we dont do class rank. Are my stats enough?

Ed/ Ea

so right now I have an 1180 SAT and I wanted to do early decision but I also wanted to take the sat one more time. The scores will come out after the material deadline for early decision. Would it be a better idea to do early decision have a week or score or to have a strong score for early action or early decision 2. does anyone know the difference between ed 1 and 2?

International applicant needing major financial aid: ed vs ea; stamps vs need based

Hey everyone!

I'm an international student from Armenia applying to the University of Miami for Fall 2027, and I'd really appreciate some advice from current students, alumni, or anyone familiar with the admissions and financial aid process.

A little about me:

GPA: 8.89/9.0

SAT: 1520 (RAW: 730, Math: 790)

<<Lomonossow-Tage in Berlin 2025>> Math Olympiad: Silver(2025), (110 participants from 14 countries)

Top 10 - National U18 Chess National and Fide Rating Ranking

National Olympiad in Literature: Bronze(2026) (~5500 participants)

National Olympiad in AI: Silver(2024), (Medal distribution: 12-16-20) (~500 participants)

Arena International Master (AIM), FIDE-recognized official chess title

Strong extracurricular background in chess, AI, entrepreneurship, and student leadership

Intended majors: Finance, Business adm, or Entrepreneurship

My family can contribute a maximum of around $5,000-15,000 per year toward the total cost of attendance, so receiving substantial financial aid is essential for me to attend.

I have two main questions:

  1. ED vs EA: Would you recommend applying Early Decision or Early Action in my situation? Since I need a very large scholarship to make UM affordable, I'm unsure whether applying ED makes sense or whether EA would be the safer choice. How does applying ED affect financial aid options for international students?

  2. Merit Scholarship vs need-based aid: Should I focus primarily on the Stamps Scholarship, or should I also apply for need-based financial aid? Is it possible to pursue both, and how realistic is it for an international student to receive enough funding to cover nearly all expenses? Does any other merit scholarships.

I'd especially appreciate insights from international students who have received significant scholarships or financial aid at UM.

Thanks so much for your help! Any advice or personal experiences would mean a lot.

How do you practice speaking a language outside of class?

Classes are fine for grammar, but actually speaking is a different thing. What do you use? What’s actually worked for you?

(FASFA) Posting incase any UM student know also

Hey everyone! I’m currently dealing with a really frustrating financial aid situation at FIU and was wondering if any UM students know and or have their own way of handling things at their Uni?

FIU is requesting additional documentation to verify my parents’ residency and tax information. My mother moved in with her mother in 2024 but continued using her previous Florida address for mailing, billing, and taxes. Since she lived with family, she doesn’t have a lease or utility bills proving where she actually lived.

FIU is requesting documents we simply don’t have, and my parents cannot afford to amend their taxes. I’ve explained everything to them, but I’m worried about losing my financial aid over circumstances outside my control.

Has anyone successfully appealed something like this or been allowed to submit alternative documentation? Is there anyone at with FASFA I can speak with who can help find a solution?
Also, my tuition payment plan option has disappeared from my account. Does anyone know if FIU can manually offer or reinstate a payment plan after it’s no longer available?

I’m genuinely trying everything I can to continue my education, and any advice would be greatly appreciated!

please give me some advices

Hey everyone,
I’m looking to transfer to UMiami as an international student for Industrial Engineering. I know UMiami meets 100% of demonstrated need but they are strictly need-aware for international transfers.
With the total Cost of Attendance (CoA) hovering around $95k - $100k/year, I’m trying to figure out where the financial "sweet spot" is to not get filtered out by admissions.
My profile is pretty solid (strong GPA, solid engineering prerequisites completed). Ideally, I would need around $55k/year in aid, meaning my family can contribute about $40k/year out-of-pocket (which I can prove on the CSS Profile / Financial Certification).
Is an EFC of $40k/year realistic enough for an international transfer with a strong profile to get accepted? Or do they mostly favor those who can pay closer to full tuition?

Would love to hear from any international transfers who successfully got aid from UMiami. Thanks!

Transfer Financial Aid

I’m planning to transfer to UM next fall and I’ve been doing my research on financial aid and I know that transfers can get 15k a year for merit. I’m an independent student and pay for my own tuition but I’m miserable at my school and really want to transfer here so I wanted to know if the financial aid office is generous to people in my situation.

writing a story on Ghost Kitchens… anyone have experiences to share?

Hey! I’m writing a piece for Distraction about ghost kitchens in Miami. These are the so called delivery-only “restaurants” that don’t have a storefront or that turn out to be a chain cooking under a different name.

If you’ve ordered from a spot on Uber Eats/Door Dash and later realized it wasn’t a real restaurant or you’ve worked in a kitchen that cooked for virtual brands or if you just have a take on about it, good or bad, in general i’d love to hear more!

Songwriters in the MADE major at Frost

Im applying as ED and I’m especially curious about how many Performing Songwriter students are typically admitted each year, how large the songwriter group is within MADE, and how difficult it is to pass the prescreening and receive an invitation to audition live and be admitted.

I’ve barely seen anything about what an applicant or current student looks like. Anything would really help.
