Question Do I have grounds for a refund given I’ve had to stand up in first class?

I pay extra for first class tickets as I have a chronic illness that makes me extremely tired and it’s very draining to stand up for long periods of time. Today they’ve overbooked the train so much that there aren’t any seats even in first class. Do I have grounds for a refund given the extra money was completely pointless?

Very glad this news outlet isn't taking the delusional and parallel-universe tone of the press releases from CrossCountry at face value.

Could it be because this reporter has suffered at the hands of XC themself?

More news channels should use actual traveller experiences to properly contextualize in this way the output of XC's PR department.

XC apologists showing up to blame the DfT and, well, anyone other than XC and privatisation in 54321...

Question Newbie Seatfrog question

Newbie question.

I booked an Advance Single from London to Edinburgh on LNER a week or two ago, but decided today that I'd like to upgrade to first class (I'm arriving in London on an overnight flight and would appreciate the extra comfort!)

I looked on Seatfrog today and my train (0930 on 29 October) and there's no auction showing up for it (in fact there are none for any trains whatsoever on that route between 0900 and 1500 on that day). But I can see plenty of first class seats still available.

My understanding is that auctions for other trains may be added - is that the case ? and if so, when might they show up?

TIA for any enlightement

Fares & ticketing Missed connection compensation

Travelling Sheffield to Stansted on advance tickets.

20 minute Delay at Sheffield means missed connection at Leicester.

Alternative trains via London cancelled due to wires on line.

I will sort alternative transport so as not to miss flight.

What compensation can I claim?

Question Why does the 5-car GWR service between Paddington and Cheltenham have TWO first class carriages?

2/5ths of the train is 1st class! And it's a fairly busy service, too. Seems like an almost irresponsible choice...

In before "Because Cheltenham's posh" jokes.

Question How easy is it to travel if your original train gets cancelled? (Especially when it's a private operator)

Apologies for the question but;

I'm a very anxious person and i have a 5 AM train to catch tomorrow through a private operator (Lumo) (I looked on their website for a lot of this info, and they're p vague about it other than 'there will be routes provided'), from up in Scotland to all the way in London. Because its an advance specific booking with no changes, and a private operator im p sure is not subject to the September 20th reforms, i'm nervous about how it will be more difficult to get to my destination.

I do know the operator allegedly will give you a different route that you can take with the same ticket, sometimes through a different service, though it tends to involves changes and similar. But also I'm nervous about possible problems that may occur cause of that, and if the ticket staff take issue with it?

Also, do you have enough time to catch next trains on alternate routes? It can vary how much notice you get before a train is cancelled, how do you gage how much time you'll have to get to a different station to get the correct train?

Also: is there a good way of telling if a train will be cancelled beforehand? How much notice do you usually get? The train i'm planning to take starts from the station i'm leaving from if that helps.

TLDR: I'm a bit paranoid and want to know about how easy it is to catch replacement trains if something goes wrong. Are train staff understanding or can further delays occur because of ticket confusion?

Again apologies if this is disorganised and confusing. I think my question is best summarised as "What's the experience if you were supposed to catch a very specific train that got cancelled, and what to watch out for when trying to get to your destination through a different route?"

Thank you train people 🙏 I get very bad travel anxiety (if i have to fly, i prefer to be at the airport five hours before takeoff, just in case), and i find having a 'backup plan' helps with it.

Came across this on YouTube and, i know that bureaucracy and money would get in the way, I think this gives a perfect solution for XC.

As much as I like how the 22X trains look, they've gotta go

Into the home stretch now before GBR takes over. Perhaps not long left to enjoy a fleet fairly uniformly wearing what i think is probably the classiest privatisation-era livery. Not looking forward to the new livery appearing. BPW this motning.

Discussion What's nicer for London-Bristol - Parkway or Temple Meads?

I'm travelling this morning from London to Filton Abbey Wood on an off-peak open return. Most journey planners are sending me to Bristol Parkway

Q1 - is it valid on this ticket to travel via TM?

Looks like my Parkway option is the 0948 from Pad arriving 11:00 followed by 11:17 short hop to Filton arr 1120.

My TM option looks like the 0930 from Pad arr 11:00, then 11:08 to Gloucester arr 11:15 at Filton. So not much in it on times.

Q2 - which route is generally comfier regarding number of other passengers?

Q3 - which route has the best scenery?

Q4 - am I cutting it too tight for the change at TM?

Discussion Chaos out of Southampton, summarised

This is based on the information given on station announcements at Southampton Central, and the XC service that I am currently on.

  • Last night saw a major incident at Woking, posted in this sub when it occurred. This carried delays on into this morning.
  • Tree blocking the line at Swanwick (fixed, but delays persist)
  • Tree blocking the line at Shawford (single-track arrangement in place)
  • Tree blocking the line at Micheldever (ditto)
  • Water mains burst between Billingshurst and Horsham has caused a lot of cancellations on Southern, including most Southampton-Brighton trains, despite not running on that line.
  • Tree blocking the line somewhere between Eastleigh, Romsey and Salisbury is preventing CrossCountry diversions along that route between Southampton and Basingstoke.
  • Tree blocking the line at Bramley is blocking XC beyond Basingstoke.
  • Two trees blocking the line around Bournemouth.
  • Tree blocking the line somewhere between Salisbury and Basingstoke.

Please take all this into account when travelling from the South and Southwest today, and turn up very early, prepared for significant delays. I am currently over 2 hours delayed. Good luck everyone.

Edit: At least 4 more trees have fallen

Picture BR Umbrella?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone, got given this umbrella by my in laws in the spring to keep in my car in case I get caught up in bad weather. Well the weather in the UK has been horrible mostly today so I finally had a reason to use it. Upon me opening it I notice this emblem that looks a lot like the British Railways Late Crest? Google reverse search showed nothing. Do I have a 1 of 1 knock off British railway umbrella? lol

Question Does delay repay keep return tickets valid?

Hi all, I’ve had the overwhelming joy of trying to get home from uni today with the current state of the trains.

My full ticket is off peak LBO -> STA open return (return within a month, any permitted route). I managed to make it down to Leicester but all the trains I could use that sent me at least in the general direction towards Stafford were all cancelled or so delayed they weren’t worth it. I ended up going back to Loughborough tonight and I’m going to get home a different way tomorrow, but would like to use the return ticket to return back to Loughborough.

If I claim delay repay on my outbound journey (either for abandoned journey or 2+ hours delay), does it invalidate the return ticket? Or should I use my return ticket first (in ~a week’s time) and then claim delay repay after?

Thanks :)
