Discussion Some Thoughts on War Memorials After the War
Recently, I have been thinking about how a memorial should be built after the war ends in victory. I apologize if this is not the right time to discuss such things。
I believe that we should not simply build a single commemorative column, but rather an entire memorial park. At its centre would stand a towering column with the Ukrainian national flag flying proudly above it, surrounded by concentric walls approximately 1.5 metres high.
The name of every fallen hero and every innocent civilian killed in the war should be inscribed on the memorial. Beside each name, there would be a QR code linking to information about that person's life and the location where they were killed. For unidentified fallen soldiers, each should be commemorated individually as an “Unknown Hero.” In this way, we would not become numb to the sheer scale of the casualties. Instead, we would remember that every person who died was once a living human being, with a life of their own, and make an effort to document and preserve each individual story. This would also allow future generations to witness just how devastating and arduous this war was.
The central monument, meanwhile, would be dedicated to all Ukrainians, commemorating the sacrifices and contributions of every individual. I have not yet decided on the specific artistic details, but there could be an eternal flame in front of it, symbolising life and the indomitable spirit of Ukraine.
At the four corners of the park, there could be four additional monuments representing men, women, the elderly, and children. These would commemorate the sacrifices and contributions of Ukrainians from all walks of life and all age groups during the war. There could also be a monument dedicated to international friends and volunteers who fought for Ukraine. The names of foreign nationals who lost their lives defending Ukraine could also be inscribed within the park.
A straight, grand avenue would lead from the central monument to the entrance of the park. Along both sides of the avenue, there could be 27 smaller monuments representing Ukraine's 24 oblasts, one autonomous republic, and two cities with special status.
At the end of the avenue would stand a triumphal arch, symbolising the end of the war and the victory of the Ukrainian people. Everyone passing through the arch would be required to remove their hats and show the utmost respect for the heroes being honoured.
Outside the triumphal arch, the names of those responsible for starting the war—including war criminals, traitors, and foreign politicians who shamefully supported the aggression—could be engraved into the pavement. They would not deserve a place inside the park alongside the heroes. Instead, their names would lie beneath the feet of every visitor who walked across them.
This is an ambitious vision. After the war, resources should first be devoted to rebuilding the country. The memorial could be constructed gradually, once peace and prosperity have been restored. Collecting and verifying information about every individual would also take a great deal of time and effort. Nevertheless, I believe that preserving the memory of every hero is worth the work.
I understand that it may be too early to discuss these things now, but I still want to share this vision with everyone. I believe it is important to have something to imagine, work towards, and hope for in the future.
I would love to hear everyone's thoughts and suggestions, including any shortcomings or weaknesses you see in my proposal.
