Personally, I couldn't give a fuck about the shenanigans. That's for scripted pro wrestling shit. I just want to watch warriors step into a cage and fight with honour to see who is the best. All that extra shit is unnecessary for me, though I do understand the moneymaking aspect of it.

But I’ll bite Mr. 1% poster. Being a good character and a bad character are different things. Ironically Hokit plays 3 characters and none of them are funny or good. But it does make bots like you post about him so I guess that’s working.
Edit: I will say of course his fights are fun to watch. Dudes an undersized HW with a wrestling background mostly swinging for the bleachers.

You made up a problem then solved it then criticized others based on your identified problem. Gas lighting.

I've never understood the need for "characters" are people watching MMA for the fights or because they want drama? Wouldn't it just be easier to watch some reality TV shite? I watch MMA because I like the sport if I want characters or drama I'll watch a film or TV show. Shit like this just makes the whole sport a joke you don't see it in any other sport

Also, people tend to talk about the UFC like they are fucking promoters or execs, who prioritize making the sport get more viewers regardless of what it becomes. Likely due to influencers having an interest in that and implicitly prioritizing hype and audience growth over everything. Also clear when people criticize cards a lot for “lack of name value”, like, why do YOU care

A shtick can definitely be done well, but Hokit is simply just cringe. Look at Chael - his shtick works because it feels believable. Hokit's feels extremely rehearsed and insincere, so it comes off as incredibly unfunny to many people.

u/BGally24 11h ago
Diff is Chael is smart, his shtick was clever and actually funny. This idiot says nothing remotely clever or smart. But…this is what the UFC has become and we can’t be surprised. “Smart people don’t like me.” is all he reminds me of.

u/TerninoMarchi 11h ago
Colby convinced ya'll that the only way to be a character is to be an asshole. I don't believe that.
8
u/JJWritesThings 10h ago
Exactly. OP (and people like them) seem to think the only character option for heels is “8th grade edgelord” and get all up in their feelings when anyone else thinks hack jokes are hack.
I’m not expecting professional fighters to be George Carlin, but I’m also not gonna pretend to be entertained when they serve up Tony Hinchcliffe leftovers.

You know who was a character? El Cucuy. But he was just genuinely half crazy which made him entertaining naturally.

Yep. Funny how Liddell, GSP, Derrick Lewis, Forrest Griffin, Stephan Bonnar, Bas Rutten, Matt Serra, and Mayhem Miller (for a while) managed to become unique, entertaining “characters” without morphing into try-hard dickheads everytime they got a mic.

5

Colby rode his popolarity into three title shots and an interim title. Where he wasn't loved he was hated even more, but he always was popular. He's built his whole persona on the idea that he was almost kicked out for being boring but he saved himself by acting as an ass.

I think you're making the mistake of thinking ufc fans are a monolith. The ones thinking the ufc is bland and needs more character aren't necessarily the ones who think Hokit is a shit stain. Like me, I don't think there needs to be more characters because I'm an elitist who wants his sport to be about sports and I'm better than you. As such, I also think Hokit is a disgusting display of humanity. He's also a good fighter.

Volkanovski is a character. Jiri is a character. This dude is just a dipshit clown using a gimmick to overcome lack of skill. He isn’t bad but he’s above average at best, not an elite superstar world beater so he does this shit.
I just say, can you imagine if a ufc presser is all dipshits just like hokit trying to out meme each other? It’d be a full blown clown show and with the way you guys beg for it, that’s exactly what it will be. Prizefighting used to be dignified.

12
u/Charming_Lack1072 11h ago
The problem is that Hokit simply isn’t entertaining outside the cage.
Hokit has some talent for the sport; He just lacks the charisma and creativity on the mic that guys like Sonnen and Mcgregor had. Just a painfully unlikable person (or his UFC persona at least).
He needs someone to write his material for him, that would help a ton.
4
u/cubertizer 11h ago
I find it entertaining when someone adds high stakes to a fight. Hokit does that every time. He's putting his reputation and credibility on the line by being this goofy moron and talking shit, but he's delivered when the cage doors close so far. If he had lost to blaydes or lewis after his shenanigans, he'd be the laughingstock of the ufc. I don't think he's a genius on the mic but watching somebody act this dumb and kick people's ass is pretty entertaining to see.

Nothing matters. You and I and everyone else currently alive will be dead and gone in only 200 years. In 500 years, no one will remember you and everything you worked to create will be gone, broken, buried or left to rot.
In a couple thousand years, there will likely have been some cataclysmic event that wipes out 99% of humanity (I'm trying to allow some hope, very likely could be 100% also).

I just don't find him entertaining in the slightest outside the cage. He puts on entertaining fights though. He's like a bad WWE character put in to MMA and I don't find it funny. But at the same time I find Strickland entertaining even though he is also playing up to a character. And Conor too when he was on point "in character" he was super entertaining. Even though they all play up to versions of themselves. But Hokit is just terrible imo, it's not even clever like Chael was. Colby was bad too, but Hokit takes the prize. I guess you have to be a WWE fan to find it appealing or something?
1
u/meatmybeat42069 9h ago
The UFC is bland because the people running don’t care about fighting anymore, not because fighters aren’t acting like cartoon characters

I like Josh. I think he's part ret*rd and annoying as hell but yes he is mildly more entertaining compared to 99% of the roster. If he wasn't as good as he is it wouldn't be entertaining at all. Let's see if someone can shut him up or not?

u/Fleche_de_feu 9h ago
Hokit sounds like a pre teenager acting "hard" to show how tough/legit he is (hes even worse then colby which i didnt like)
Hell even strickland is enjoyable to listen to talk shit SOMETIMES
While there is guys like sonnen who talked so much shit but was witty in what he said and interesting that over the years its still great to go back and listen to it (prime mcgregor also comes to mind)

I think when people say they enjoy interesting characters, they're wishing for the cleverness that guys like Chael and prime Conor brought. Hokit's "13-year-old playing Call of Duty" thing doesn't scratch the same itch.
