Need a part time job near North Campus?

• Upvotes

Hi guys!! I’ve seen a lot of posts about part time jobs/work study lately, and with that I thought I’d post the job on here. It’s about a 10-15 minute drive from north campus, on the corner of N. French and Transit in East Amherst. If you’re interested or know someone who might be interested, apply! I know that this store is looking for applicants going into the Christmas season. If yall have any questions, feel free to dm me!!

Grad school admissions timeline

Hey guys, I just applied for a graduate program over in the SEAS for the fall 2027 semester. I'm currently a UB undergrad student and was wondering when we would typically be hearing about whether we get accepted into the program or not.

Does anyone have any insight?

Good SOC courses to take?

Changed my major from math to sociology and criminology (very long story). I’d like to learn more about women and children that commit crimes, rehabilitating criminals, and also, completely unrelated, internet meme culture.

What courses would be good to take for these interests? I am planning on taking Urban Sociology, Sociology of City Life, and Juvenile Justice, Organized Crime, Gender & Crime, and Beyond the Walls. Even if they’re offered occasionally I’d love to hear them if possible.

Thank you!

I wasn’t sure if there were any courses anyone would recommend

I've listened to advice in office hours on not overthinking, but I end up getting confused on how to solve something. I get stuck on even after writing out the inputs and outputs and making an example to see how it would work. I just keep getting stuck on little problems that end up taking a lot of time for me to solve and I don't know why this always happens. I swear I'm trying my best, but it's not enough. This happens every week, and I have to take the class in order to graduate. I don't know what's wrong with me. I go as slow as possible and I genuinely do try, but I end up have to turn in assignments late and I end up getting a lower grade. I just don't know why I can't do this. I'm sick of feeling this way, and I'm just tired of myself failing over and over again.

easiest hardware course?

I need to take one of these next semester, but I have pretty much zero hardware knowledge, so I’m looking for the most beginner-friendly option:

  • CSE 490 with Naeem Maroof
  • CSE 379 with Kris Schindler
  • CSE 489 with Sai Roshan Ayyalasomayajula

For anyone who’s taken them:

  • How is the grade broken down (exams, homework, projects/labs)?
  • What’s the weekly workload like?
  • Which one would be easiest to do well in without prior hardware experience?

Seasonal depression: how to ID it and how to treat it (with references)

I've seen a statistically-significant uptick in depressed posters in this subreddit recently and it occurred to me that it is, indeed, close to winter, which means time for seasonal depression... yay...

If you haven't heard of this: seasonal affective disorder ("SAD", lol) is one of many reasons a person could get depressed this time of year. All the usual depression symptoms - low energy, oversleeping, negative emotions, overeating, etc - can happen as a result, and depending on the person, it can be very subtle, the first time it happened to me I didn't even notice until I felt better in the summer.

So if you've been feeling kind of bad for no particular reason, this could be it. As for what to do about it, some options include:

  • Vitamin D: especially this far north most people are deficient in this vitamin. They have it cheap in most grocery stores (including Aldi and the dollar store).
    • Note: if you want to check for serious deficiency that's a pretty simple and cheap blood test. You should be able to request it at Student Health Services.
  • Magnesium: clinically recommended as part of treating depression in general. You can take it with the vitamin D for best efficacy.
    • Note: there are multiple chemical structures of magnesium out there; magnesium oxide is less recommended as it can irritate the stomach.
  • Light therapy: under the same umbrella as vitamin D deficiency, insufficient exposure to sunlight can contribute to seasonal depression. I put it lower on this list because the lights for light therapy cost more money, but you can find them online. You sit in front of the sun lamp for 30 minutes to an hour every day.
    • Note: don't stare at the light, though. It's bright.

Interviews/Writing Tips

I'm trying to do a story for my journalism class assignment. I want to use nostalgia as my theme and basically write about how 2026 is giving 2016 vibes and how everyone's in this era of nostalgia, plushies, rewatching childhood shows, etc.

I'm not sure how to start it, so does anyone have any ideas?

Also, would anyone be willing to get interviewed? No video, just a recording so that I can use quotes in my story?

Thanks.

Double major

This is so stupid. Why can’t I double major in the school of management?? I pay money to be here I should be allowed to double major in whatever I want. They allow double majoring within the same school pretty much every where. What makes UB so special that you can’t double majors within a school.

Questions Students Who Live On Campus Using Financial Aid — How Do You Make It Work Every Year?

Hey everyone! I’m a NYS resident planning to transfer to UB fall 2027

I wanted to know how those of you who’ve lived on campus for a while have managed to get your housing fully covered by financial aid every semester/year without paying out of pocket.

Also, what housing options did you choose, and did you base your choice on how much aid you received?
Has your aid stayed pretty consistent each year?

I graduated high school well over 5 years ago, so I’m assuming I’d qualify for most, if not all, of the on-campus housing options, including apartments.
I’d love to hear how you guys have made it work, especially if you’re also a NYS resident. Thanks!

What are the best apartment options near north campus. I have a car but prefer not to drive it to class on north and south campus. When do people usually sign leases for next year? Thanks!

Grim reaper guy seems like a creep

That guy that goes around in the grim reaper costume needs to understand that chasing women (or anyone for that matter) around campus at night is super fucking weird. Sure it's funny if someone else comes up to him or they're in the same area and he casually approaches but there are people who are concerned about their safety and having someone that you cannot identify coming after you when you aren't interested in fooling around like that is just creepy.
