Question(s) Help! Dog came in with tortoise

Hi all! To my shock my dog came in with this poor little thing tonight! Looking for advice for safe temporary accommodations (and identification if possible) until we either find the owner or can take him to a specialty reptile store or maybe vet for more information (don’t worry, I know that generic pet stores give garbage advice!)

For now I just put some water and romaine in a little plastic bin with a paper towel. I’m worried the paper towel might be toxic but unsure what would be appropriate. Should I bathe it or leave it? It has some dog hair on it :( Is the thing at the bottom of its shell normal or an injury? It’s still been hiding in its shell, but I’ve seen it move so I know it’s alive.

Thank you kindly!

Question(s) Horny Tortoise

Post image
3 Upvotes

I have two ~15 yo Hermanns tortoise (female and male). The male has always been extremely horny and constantly humping the female. He has always bit the female's hind legs, which I did not like, but it didn't seem too bad.

This year he has been much more consistently chasing her and biting her, sometimes her head. Whenever I am around, I flip him to try to discourage the biting. It is not working. I have been resorting to just putting him into a timeout box.

Any ideas on what I can do to have them coexist peacefully?

Video What kind of tortoise is this?

My coworker’s mom rescued a tortoise in the past and she hatched a couple of babies later. They are giving away the babies right now and I will adopt one from them. Could you tell from the video what kind of tortoise are they?

NSFW - Injured, Ill or Deceased Mistreated Tortoise? NSFW Spoiler

I was out trail running today in an expensive equestrian community and saw this tortoise in an enclosure.

While it was cool to see, this is serious pyramidding; right?

Should this be reported to animal control?

I think I can figure out the address.

Question(s) He’s ruining his water bowl

I have had a variety of styles of water bowls for my tortoise but when he’s walking around his table he constantly walks through it kicking all his substrate into it so it’s barely fresh. Any advice at all?

hello, it's me again. we did our best to prevent infection to our pet, mikey, by applying diluted betadine on its injuries and just keeping him clean since we haven't been able to find any vet clinics near our province in pampanga (philippines). we tried looking up online as well but we're kind of hesitant in giving it medication without any proper consult, but what else can we really do? :((

it's been 3 days since i last posted here. since then, mikey hasn't been eating properly like it used to and we noticed that it has a foul odor 😞 we're worried. what if we're witnessing its final moments and treatment can't be given due to lack of local facilities :<

edit: we're new owners

Question(s) Should I be concerned that my tortoise is being less active?

This last week I've noticed my indoor tortoise is being less active than normal. This is my first tortoise and its about 9 months old. Usually it will spend the day exploring the enclosure and climbing on the hideys but now its mostly just hiding out. It does come out to bask and eat but is definitely less active. I wasnt sure if thats normal or if I should be concerned. Also, how do we refer to tortoises before we know if its a boy or girl? Saying it feels weird but its too young to know lol

Question(s) Weaning a tortoise

Hello,

I am currently trying to get my tortoise to eat more and different foods - were currently trialling optimised 52 with him and were on day 2. We've added such a small amount to his food with majority being his current diet. However even with such a small amount he is point blank refusing any of the food.

Now, hes 2 years old so obviously I want him to continue to eat and Im not giving up with this new food.

Is there any advice anyone can give?

Hes a mediterranean spur thighed incase thats important here

I’m in the Austin tx area. I have two Russian tortoises one male one female, last year I had my male inside and kept him heated and active this year I’ve added a new addition as well as moved them outside, I’m trying to figure out how I’m going to handle the winter with the weather getting cooler, I’m hesitant to bring them inside and brumate them as I’m not sure if I’ll be able to maintain stable temperatures what are you doing for yours this winter and any suggestions on how I can go about this.

Question(s) Indoor plants (real/fake) recommendation needed

Hi,

I would like to add some plants in indoor red foot enclosure, but I don't really know what to get. If real, I really need something that is good for them to take a bite on, and something that doesn't need natural light (I only have UVB/A and heat lamp).

For fake ones, I found some like the Komodo Monstera Standing Plant Decoration, some fake succulent plants or some kind of vines kind of plants as a wall background. However, I'm scared of having my tortoise eating plastic.

I don't have a bio-enclosure for numerous reasons. But I can try to get very small plants.

What would you recommend?

Thank you

Question(s) Humidity in night box

Post image
7 Upvotes

Just adopted a 10 year old Leopard tortoise. He has some decent pyramiding. We live in Los Angeles so it's almost never humid. I have a night box with a heat panel on the ceiling and Kane heat pad. What are some safe and effective ways of adding humidity to the box? Is it ok to completely close it off at night? I feel a little weird about him not being able to leave when he wants.

Question(s) Hermanns staying out tonight

We have an 8 year old Hermanns tortoise that we inherited over summer. We live in the north west of England and the tortoise lives in the garden in an insulated house with a UVB lamp on a timer and a ceramic heat lamp on a thermostat. It can come and go as it pleases but has never come back in the evening to its house so we’ve always found it and put it away back in its house.
Lately, I assume because it’s getting cold, it’s started to bury itself in the boarders and completely covers itself. This evening we have gone out and we can’t find it anywhere. It definitely can’t get out of the garden so must be buried somewhere.
Will it be ok staying out all night, it’s due to drip to about 6 degrees C.
We will eventually brumate it, probably in 3 or 4 weeks.
